I love that his daughter is playing on her phone, not lifing one brow despite daddy messing with the outlets on his knees in a hotel. I can only wonder what this kid has seen through the years..
It's hard to tell when he is pranking with the sparks, but that hotel suite only had a subpanel with no main breaker. If a dead short is big and fast enough it will trip both the branch and the main, and possibly even further up. Then he would have been forced to break into that central electrical room to hide his tracks. Or get the hotel management involved. "I dunno what happened.."
This is actually a very refreshing take on teaching people about electric and GFCI. You basically brought humor to the mix for a very important issue of regular checking GFCI. This is so very clever. Nicely done
I booked an Airbnb once, it was a 10 storey building. So basically a Hotel only using one room as an airbnb but all the others with doors open wires hanging out concrete rubble everywhere including corridors. It was awful and i was going to spend a month there. The breathing was difficult from the dust so I just left.
Mehdi could go to establishments like Gordon Ramsey did but he instead checks the safety of electrical equipment and turns the place upside-down to knock some sense into the owners.
@@oak8728 mehdi specifically eludes to nuking "tax fraud data" in the killer usb video. If I was upset that he was writing of his vacation, and I can understand your confusing my comment for jealousy. but please explain to me why that would concern the hotel owner?
@@itainteasy correct I thought you were trying to nuke the op comment as if you were the hotel owner. To be fair your comment of the tax fraud data nuke is not really close to a deduction as the op was referring to making your joke hard to follow. You gotta be a dad ;)

I imagine that the switches and handles at a low level is an accessibility feature. Imagine you _need_ a wheelchair or crutches and you want to open the door or turn the lights on?
@@umakemerandy3669 lol that wasn’t a joke. Japanese apartments have much shorter design, if you are taller you’ll have a hard time using countertops in the kitchen
For hotel rooms the primary things that make a room handicapped accessible are: switches and door handles at a lower height wider doorways grab bars in the tub area or a roll-in/walk-in shower Some hotels go above and beyond and do things like no cabinet under the sink to make it easier to reach.
That is exactly what it's for, they usually lower the switches in houses specifically designed to be wheelchair accessible. I imagine the hotel does the same thing but for all the rooms so they don't have to make a different room layout for disabled people.
Normal People: "Ah, the beach, the sand... Beautiful!" Mehdi: "The source of semi-conductors, this humidity affects the components... And where are the breakers?"
I'm like ElectroBoom, I stayed in a place that still uses screw fuses, it was the main panel too. Such beauty, but also a bit dangerous since one of them was bypassed with a nail. Some of the outlets were so loose you could take them out of the wall when you unplugged something, and of course, no ground anywhere.
@@Carlium sounds like my house, except no fuses bridged, but there def isn't a ground anywhere, the quickest replacement for ground in such old installations is best done by shorting neutral to earth, so then you arent static shocked when touching metal appliances
I don't know anything about income taxes in Canada, but as an American, this looked like "How can I take the family on vacation to Hawaii, and write it off as a business expense?"
8:11 - Over here, metal flush-boxes are RARE. They were basically discontinued as standard ages ago, although, you can still use them if you want. ALL the flush-boxes in the last 30-40 years, and all new installs, use plastic ones. Mind you, grub-screw type terminals, not just 'Wrap around and screw' type flat screw connections. 240v also, and an earth line and M.E.N. connection system. Not sure if they even use M.E.N. at all in American 110v systems. Most sockets and plugs seem to be two prong, with no earth line at all. I note the SOCKETS in USA allow for an earth pin, but it seems to be very rarely used. Over here, ALL appliances and wall sockets MUST have that third earth connection UNLESS the product is 'Double-insulated' - which is indicated by a double square symbol on the product if that is the case. Very entertaining video! :)
As a maintenance technician for an apartment complex usually we are held to higher standards as we lease homes but every time someone moves out we have to go in and fix anything broken and update old apartments so we have a list of everything we need to do including testing and replacing outlets and switches.
As a tip, don't buy the cheap $0.99 outlets. Pay a few bucks and get the so-called "commercial grade" outlets. They have much better contacts that last a lot longer generally.
Smoke detector is a year older than I am. Kinda scary. It would be neat if you or someone else were able to access the room a year later to see if the hotel owner fixed the issues that were brought up. Also rest in peace potentiometer. Your noble sacrifice may save the lives of future guests.
I got a travel sized multimeter for my last trip well worth it. Didn’t have any trouble although it was my checked bag. On the other hand if for some reason you bring two laptops through somehow I got waived in to have extra inspection on that they had to wipe it down and run it through a chemical screening machine.
Even though I'm tall, I find I don't have to bend down to flip the switch, actually, they're usually just above height my hand naturally rests at, just takes some getting used to, not having to lift my hand right up to flip the switch. Even better, means that if anyone with a wheelchair wants to live there, they won't have to adjust anything.
Love how daughter is in background as you remove a hotel outlet, and she isn't even phased... 'Yeah, that's what he does...' lol Also, love that you brought a multimeter, screwdriver and thermal cam, plugs with open wires on end, potentiometers on vacation. As one does. 😆 I'd love to see the questions you'd have gotten if TSA screened your luggage, lol
I imagine Mehdi explaining to the hotel reception they need to fix their outlets whilst also explaining why he needed to break into their breaker room.
I feel like being "that guy": I don't know which beach you were at, but a lot of the sands in Hawaii are coral-based. That means they are more calcium carbonate and less silica....so no semi-conductors :-(
@@ryanmalin Just more semi then normal semi-conductors..... or it is more conductor then semi-conductor? Or like a not-so-super conductor? Wait.... where does all that calcium for the coral come from? Those things are everywhere.
@@ryanmalin well the semi conductors aren't made from sources that aren't already pretty much pure silica / quarz, so yeah no the sand with 50% calcium carbonate isn't semi-conductors
I mean the silicon in semiconductors isn't coming from sand either, it's usually mined and purified. The higher the purity of the starting material the less work you need for further purification.
@@InTimeTraveller from what I just researched on wiki & yt, either quartz or sand (silica sand obviously) is purified to metallurgical grade elemental silicon, and some of that is further purified into semiconductor or solar panel grade silicon (crystaline silicone). So yeah it doesn't come directly from sand, and it definitely doesn't come from a sand that has large amounts of calcium in it.
@@michaelpichahchy2489 Absolutely. As someone who works with their hands, I can appreciate ANY JOB done to that level of perfection. I can only dream of wiring up that clean lol
Yep. That breaker box is 40 years old. Looks like it was wired yesterday. Then he gets the grunts to mount those baseboard outlets with no elec box. SMH
Damn that is one vintage smoke detector -1984 George Orwell. I was expecting sparks when you removed it from the ceiling. Now Airbnb is going to add "ElectroBOOM!" star ratings to it's listings - this one would be a 2 star hotel! Breaking into the electrical closet - priceless!
That was something new I learnt about poor contacts becoming a fire hazard! I’m going to check all my outlets today. Great video Mehdi, hope you all enjoyed the holiday 🙏
@Karl with a K this is why i dont use dimmers period. even when i moved to my new apartment the first thing i did was check every outlet and find a place to put my pc where i could use more then one to power everything.
now that I think about it, poor contact is like trying to run a large current through a thin cable, because the same amount of current has to go through smaller area, it heats up faster.
9:25 "Unfortunately It's not accessible to public, otherwise I would check their outlets" If Mehdi goes to area 51, the first thing he will do is check their outlets. 🤣😂
I love that someone is sitting on the sofa in the background looking at their phone, blithely accepting that sitting on the floor pulling out a socket without flipping the trip switch is simply what Mehdi does on holiday. That's a great view of family life right there.
Medhi, you saw how old those smoke detectors and outlets were. We've been in a pandemic for 3 years, not 3 decades. The hotel had plenty of chance to fix these items before the pandemic, an I'm sure they were broken by then. They're bad not because they can't fix them, but because they don't care
@@bubba99009 Realistically, it would take an electrician less than a day to replace all the outlets and detectors in all of the units. Outlets can be had for $1 a piece and $15 a piece for GFCI. And that's the consumer price, not even the contractor price. It would only cost a couple thousand to fix. They waste more money on shitty soap bottles.
Do you think when he goes to have dinner at someone else’s house he brings a multimeter and asks where’s their breaker box is? He’s like “Excuse me, I have to use the restroom” and hear him blowing up an outlet in the other room.
as an electrician, I can attest that my wife hates going out to eat with me because all I will do is stare at the ceiling. If it's more than 20 years old, and has exposed ceilings, you are going to find violations. Every time.
I definitely appreciate the message at the end. That being said, the smoke detector was dated to 1984. I think maintenance at that specific location for safety equipment maybe had some issues even before the world economic slowdown impacted vacation rental markets. To be fair, the majority of rentals I've had in Hawaii have been similar to that one. Focus on that kind of thing seems like a lower priority there compared to the mainland.
Other possibility, the test actually sends electric signals to a control room somewhere else and the people there are just confused as to why the alarm there rings but no smoke can be seen
@@ZenoDLC you still don't leave a smoke detector in service for nearly 4 decades they usually have a service life of 10 years & even if you do they'd need cleaning & that was filthy.
I enjoy how he actually teaches us multiple safety tips and helpful hints while he's going about and intentionally shorting stuff and kinda injuring himself. Way to engage and still learn some
I've been following this channel for a few years and watched it grow. This man is a perfect example of a fully-qualified electrical engineer who's deliberately acting like a total fool in order to show everyone precisely how and what NOT to do... ever! ❤ Anyone who leaves derogatory comments on any of his videos is clearly oblivious to the fact that he knows EXACTLY what he can do with out causing damage to himself of other people's property! I'd actually love to have a beer with this guy 😀
He's gotten distracted a few times with the camera and gone further than I think he intended to. Not sure if he meant to short out in the breaker box. I think he was too focused on making sure the camera could see the meter screen.
at 7:53-7:54, I knew that the outlet would just blast... this man literally puts his life at risk and almost dies multiple times just to keep us entertained while also learning... thank you
I'd love to hear the conversation between Mehdi and TSA trying to explain why he needs to bring a bunch of his electronics with him on his 'family vacation'
Meanwhile in South Africa: Airport security: Sir, what are these? Me: Those are Glock 19 magazines and spare recoil springs. Airport security: Ah ok. Enjoy your flight.
“That’s a giant observatoryyyy… unfortunately it is not accessible to the public.. otherwise I would check its outlets” that is the most electroBoom thing to say lmao
I freakin’ LOST IT when he was by the observatory and said “unfortunately it is not accessible to the public, otherwise… I would check its outlets.” :D
If he goes up here with Cub Scout or Boy Scouts he can scope the outlets then. The Air Force has given multiple tours of the telescopes over the years to our local scouts 🤘🤘
9:23 observatory closed to public otherwise would have checked it out"lets". I also love that the wife and daughter are chilling on vacation (as supposed to) but Mehdi is embracing the nerd spirit :)
I'm sure the observatory staff would be very pleased when they have been waiting 2 years to get a good viewing window of Pluto and their power mysteriously dies...
7:30 - I like how Electrocute briefly looks over, realizes it's just her dad playing with the electrical socket, and goes back to flipping through her phone.
