Hawaiian National Anthem - Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī 

I am a Native Hawaiian now living in California, my great grandmother, Ceclilia Kaʻupena, was a lady in waiting to Queen Liliʻuokalani and her grandmother to Queen Emma, the wife of King Kamehameha IV. I am 62 yrs old and still cry every time I sing Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī. If you would like to know perhaps the dearest royalist song of our people, post a rendition of Kaulana Nā Pua, which was written by Eleanor Pendergast, another of the Queenʻs ladies in waiting, right after the overthrow of our government by the United States and 13 American planters, the sons of American Congregationalist missionaries. We still sing the last verse of this song: "Māhope mākou ʻo Liliʻulani, aloaʻa e ka pono o ka ʻāina- We all fervently hope that Liliʻulani ( a diminutive of her full name) will be return to her throne."
