Hawaiʻi Ponoʻī (Hawaii’s own) was the national anthem of the Kingdom of Hawaii between 1876 and 1893, and has been the state anthem of Hawaii since 1967. The words were written in 1874 by King David Kalākaua to music composed by Captain Henri Berger, the Prussian bandmaster of the Royal Hawaiian Band. The song’s composition was inspired by God Save the Queen and Heil dir im Siegerkranz.
