Native Hawaiian practitioners are fighting for a permanent ban on aquarium fishing to ensure our natural resources are maintained for future generations.
Why are we allowing outside businesses to take fish from out State and transport them to other places while giving nothing back to Hawaii? It makes absolutely no sense. They are poaching! There are limits to commercial fishing for food. There should be the same for aquariums.

Hawaiians had it down and figured out all the way to a death sentence with the kapu system once stocks showed signs of depletion the chief would restrict harvesting and put that area out of rotation, people nowadays catch until no more they should restrict and kapu the entire Hawaiian islands especially oahu which is over 90% depleted Awesome this is the start to an end of the netting, the law makers should ban all forms of commercial netting in the Hawaiian islands,with the current laws and Restrictions in place all forms of netting is an unsustainable and indiscriminate way of harvesting fish, use Maui island as an example and follow exactly what #lindalingle put in place which is a total ban on all net usage for catching fish, if everyone uses hook and line style fishing methods there would be fish till the end of time, it’s when you use nets that you catch the valuable fish which are smart enough to pass on the genes to produce quality healthy stock, when you hook and line you catch the greedy obtuse fish #bannetting #kapusystem

Hawaiians cry about poaching but sure eat a lot of poke depleting Tunas. I love my yellow tang I’ve had it for years. They Cry stateside and cry in the islands I don’t understand. Stop crying.
It’s mostly ASIANS who over consume fish for poke, not Hawaiians. Use your brains, Hawaiians make up LESS than 10% of the population, whereas Asians make up 45-50%.
Go do research and you'll see why the tuna is being depleted its because of drag nets. All these big companies that make tuna in cans are the reason. And they're not gonna stop it cause it's a billion dollar industry. Go watch seaspiracy and you'll see what's really killing the ocean.
If people knew the reefs was getting vacuumed of fish to make money for a few sketch thieves the law would pass. Decades ago used to swim through schools of Tangs in south Kona, now, nothing.
I used to swim at Lanikai. All of the reef heads had swarms of little fish. Dudes would come in vans and capture the fish. A whole truck full of fish. The reef fish gradually disappeared. Sad and horrible. Bravo to the Hawaiians. It is wrong! Permanent ban!
I agree with banning aquarium fishing in Hawaii to protect the natural resources. But, Hawaii needs to get real, it has overly relaxed fishing regulations and enforcement is a joke. It's also a cultural problem, catch and release is not as prevalent in Hawaii as it is in other places. Hawaii should really take a look at places like Florida, specifically in the Keys and look at how well they manage their fishery and the culture that follows. No more catching manini fish and saying that one good for pan fry lol.
Ya they tried but Brenton awa voted no to the ban. And all these people say he's for the people when he can't even back up his own communities wishes. Majority of kahaluu residents wanted to ban the commercial aquarium fishing and he went against that and said no. Ya so much for being for the people and what's right for the island.
