Have you been to Hawes, tell us what you thought of the town or the campsite?

I occasionally take a trip to Hawes on a Tuesday - market day - and it's always a treat. If I'm there, I usually have lunch in the cafe/restaurant next door to the Spar shop. And yes, I've also had the steak and ale pie in the chip shop you mentioned. Around 20 minutes down the road, is the village of Askrigg, where the original 1970's series of All Creatures Great & Small was filmed. And if you enjoyed the steak and ale pie in the chip shop in Hawes, then I strongly recommend the steak pie at the Crown Inn at Askrigg. It's the best steak pie I've had in a *long* time. And make a point of trying the ice cream waffles for desert afterwards. I'm told the cook makes the ice cream herself, and it's the creamiest Ice cream I've ever had. I'd also recommend a trip to Bainbridge, which is just a few miles from Hawes. The Corn Mill in Bainbridge is good for a tea or coffee stop, and offers a nice selection of sandwiches and snacks..... and while you're in Bainbridge, a short trip to Semerwater is well worth it for the scenery......My favourite cheese from the creamery in Hawes is their Cheddar with caramelised onion...... And while you're in North Yorkshire, a trip to the village of Dent, along with Dent railway station (which is several miles from Dent!) as it's England's highest mainline railway station, on the famous Settle to Carlisle route. The views from the station are excellent.....

@@Brian-om2hh HI Brian. Thank you for the message and recommendations. I am now looking forward to next time visiting the village of ASkrigg and trying the steak pie at the Crown Inn, sounds idyllic. I think we will stay at a couple of places next time we are up that way to take in more of what you have recommended, I cannot think of many, if not any more beautiful places in the country to visit. We bought back some of the cheese you mentioned from the creamery with the caramelised onion, it was great as cheese on toast and you have just reminded me that I need to make an order.

My Mam was evacuated in Hawes during the second world war for almost seven years. I’ve been there almost every year of my adult life. We had a static caravan behind Brown Moor Farm (it’s currently the reception building where you stayed) for a number of years and the area where you stayed was a camping site. Our static was condemned as too old when the caravan club took over and unfortunately couldn’t afford to replace. The only thing that has really changed over the years is extra safety measures in the play park at the start of the village. There was a slide that was about 25 foot high which obviously had to go! Thanks for the memories.

Hi there, thank you so much for your comment and lovely memories of your past in what is one of our favourite stays available. We would have loved to experience the pre health and safety experience in Hawes as you did. The lovely thing is that although it's obviously changed in the area, there is still plenty of nostalgia for someone like yourself.

Thanks for replying. Another great memory was walking behind Hardraw Waterfall as a child, and into my twenties. The noise of the water hitting the bottom of the scar was almost deafening after a heavy rainfall. A few people slipped though, and fences were erected to prevent people from gaining access. Nowadays there is a gate, but access is strongly forbidden by a sign. I don’t condone it, but I have witnessed people ignoring the signs!!

You didn't find Kevin Costner then? (Bet that water in Prince of Thieves was snowmelt, like at Aysgarth)..

😆That's why Mr Costner gets the big bucks! Sarah was very disappointed not to find him, but at the temperatures you describe, I am not sure he would have been so impressive 😉

Do you know if any of the pubs are dog friendly? What's the access like for an 8ft wide caravan? Thanks
@beatentrackleisure
@beatentrackleisure 2 месяца назад
If I remember correctly, most of the pubs were pet friendly that we visited, which is nearly all of them! Access wise, There's no problem at the CAMC with that size of caravan, but I'll caveat that by saying that the windy roads in the dales may be challenging in some parts, but I don't believe it will be an issue bearing in mind our van is not quite as wide.

I just want to make it clear that it was only Sarah that was pondering on that and I did point out the error of her ways 😁 she was keen to point out that her actual point came out wrong! 🤔
