This video has really stirred up my Hawker demons. I remembered an incident that I've kept a secret all these years. The people who would care are all gone so I can tell it. We were landing at Cambridge Bay one fine winter afternoon. I was the First Officer flying with a very experienced and respected Captain. It was my landing and I got too close, too high, told the Captain:"I've really f****d this up, we"ve got to go around." So he said "I have control" and landed. At the point where the rudder is no longer effective, the airplane spun one hundred and eighty degrees on the glare ice and went off the runway backwards into snow and stopped. A tribute to The Mighty Hawker is that there was no damage. We powered up and taxied to the terminal.

I flew HS-748s in the Canadian Arctic for Bradley Air Services/First Air in the late eighties. It was an excellent machine for the Arctic. Virtually all airstrips there were gravel, but close to sea level, so the 748 performed very well. The other nice thing about The Mighty Hawker, as we called it, was that it was so sensitive in pitch that we could track the cabin attendant's progress toward the flight deck with our coffee or meals. We also used them on freight charters in the US (we rotated through the Arctic 3wks in/3wks out). One night flying from Dayton, Ohio, to Montreal, Quebec, we were at 25000' in a lightly loaded airplane with a honkin tailwind. The Cleveland Center controller asked us "Bradley 805, what kind of airplane is that? I'm not familiar." Grounding at about 350kts at 25000', I responded: "We're a Cessna 172". Not another word from ATC till hand-off to Toronto Centre. Great airplane. This vid triggered some great memories.

Nice catch of the Mount Cook 748. I can remember seeing them at Queenstown and Christchurch airports years ago. They were eventually replaced with the ATR-72- 200 in the late 1990's then the -500 and now -600.

I have never been to the UK before, nor was I born by the time of recording, but I'm glad I found this channel which is filled with up close and personal footage of some older airplane model and what happened to them.

Brings back memories of seeing those birds flying in and out of ET. Joshua Airport in St. Vincent. We used to call them 'Avro LIAT' since LIAT used to operate them.
