He is amazing 👏 He is not playing piano to win. He's just enjoying Chopin music he plays on this stage.

It is no matter that Hayato Sumino is not included in the final stage. He is a man who transcends any competition or contest. He will one day become legend and be known far and wide--appreciated and beloved--his music immortal. The heavens speak through his fingers and his music touches our souls.

私は別の方を応援するためにリアルタイムで聴いていました。そして心をもってかれて、目も離せなくなったのは、まさに角野さんでした。恥ずかしながら角野さんのことは存じあげなかった。全く素のままで、こんなにショパンを楽しめたのは角野さん以外の誰でもなかった。こんなに素晴らしい音楽の扉を開いてくれた角野さんに出会えたことが幸せです。

角野さんの演奏を聴いていると、ショパンを、「生きている人」として感じることができます。彼は当時の今を生きていました。活力に満ち、生命力に溢れ輝いていた、そんなショパンの姿がタイムスリップして現代の私達の前にいると感じました。 そして葬送行進曲には泣きました。ショパンの死までの心の変遷が見えるようでした。彼は死にたくなかった。まだ若い自分に容赦なく忍び寄る死の足音を聞かねばならなかった彼の苦しみ、恐怖。 苦悩のうちに次第に自分の死を受け入れていく。容赦なく忍び寄る死の陰の中で、短い生涯を振り返り、思い思い出とともに悲しみの波をすすんでいく。最期には力強ささえ感じる程の悟りの境地へと到達していく。等身大のショパンをここまではっきりと感じることができたのは初めてでした。結核で徐々に体が蝕まれていくのは、想像を絶する辛さであったことでしょう。 コロナ禍の中で、亡くなければならなかった若者たちのことに思いを重ね合わせていました。 角野さんは、一人のショパンという人の実存を伝えてくださいました。 コンチェルトを聴くことができず残念でしたが、どうか気落ちなさらずに、これからも、ショパンの勇姿を体現できる唯一無二のピアニストとして、演奏を聴かせてください。 応援しています。

真っ直ぐに目を見開いて、渾身で演奏された『葬送行進曲』。 きっと、このショパンコンクールでしか観れない演奏だと思いました… そして今の時代、リアルでもアーカイブでもその演奏を何回でも見れる幸せを感じます。 かてぃんさんは、ピアノやクラッシックに対して距離があった世界中の沢山の人をショパンコンクールに連れて来てくれたと思います！

Amazing at Jazz, Classical, composing, arranging, improvising, has Master's degree in Engineering from Tokyo University, RU-vid star, become a Steinway artist, Casio ambassador and other brands, while having a fun personality but also knows when to be serious and humble. Groove, swagger, depth, he has it all. Super impressive.

A year ago, I stumbled upon Hayato's youtube channel (Cateen) when I was searching for Chopin's Winter Wind (Etude op 25 no 11). Hayato's winter wind is the best among the others (in my opinion) that caught my attention. Since then, I followed his youtube and instagram, only to realize that he is not just an incredible pianist in classical pieces but also excellent in improvisation too. As I know, not every pianist can be really good in improvisation. I'm very impressed with Hayato's talented skills. Watched all his 3 stages including the preliminary round of this competition, his interpretation was very natural yet full of emotion in his own way. If I can feel it through the screen like this, what more if I'm listening to his performance live at the audience seat... especially during the marche funèbre. He deserved to be in the final. Very proud of him to make this far on this competition. He will be the one pianist that Chopin will be interested to listen more. I guess Chopin himself will be so mad at the juries for not letting Hayato qualified as finalist. . .

今年のショパンコンクールで最大の発見は角野隼人さんを知ったことです。以来毎日、仕事をしながら聞いています。私は60代で、20歳前後は良くクラッシックの演奏会に行ったのですが、その後他のジャンルの音楽を楽しんでいました。かていんさんのyoutubeも効いて、この人の才能に驚いています。退屈だと思っていたクラッシック音楽のかっこよさにはまってしまいました。ショパンが生きていた時代は、もっとサロンなどで人々が楽しめる音楽だったと思います。角野さんの挑戦が、クラッシックやジャズなど様々な音楽の垣根を越えて人々を楽しませる力があると思います。今後の活動期待します！

He is a pioneer in classical music world to make “ordinary people” love classical music. I used to think that classical music was for music educated or rich people. He made me listen to classical music and even made me love it without any basic knowledge. I think Chopin wanted that too, ordinary people can love and enjoy classical music.

He is NOT playing the piano. He is being the piano and trying to speak directly to our brain.

I had the incredible privilege of hearing Vladimir Horowitz performing the Chopin Piano Sonata in a recital in Portland, OR. Frederic Chopin and Horowitz and Rubinstein are smiling broadly with Sumino's performance. Their music and performances will live for eternity. So will Sumino's. (My father was a gold medal winner from the Brussels Conservatory. I so wish he could experience Hayato Sumino..... My father's interpretations of Chopin were incredible....he understood the music and Chopin...and he would be on his feet applauding this performance.)

Hi all, Hayato's Japanese interview by PTNA straight after his 3rd round performance. "The 3rd round has finished. I have been feeling more and more that I'm just there; where there is the music of Chopin rather than myself playing Chopin. I feel this more and more after each round. So although I was nervous in the first round, now I'm not nervous at all and I just enjoy the sound of music in the hall, which I'm literally playing. It's like I myself are going to nothing, just concentrating on that music. I experienced this today. It was a very special experience."

It's still a mystery why he doesn't get a spot in the final. To me, he shows most respect for Chopin's music and treat it seriously, unlike these finalists who smile and make faces in between movements of the concerto.

Almost every Contestant plays a beautiful and attractive piano with ingenuity for interpretation and folklore to Chopin. But as a pianist. Among them, what I feel about Hayato Sumino's piano is He plays a timeless, natural and beautiful piano, as if Chopin was playing at the time. I felt that this piano, which made me feel lightness and improvisation, had a special value. Chopin would be sad that he wasn't in the final. But his three rounds were just too good. The funeral march was Chopin of the soul.

I'm still baffled by the results. You cannot let a man pour his entire soul into a performance like this, have him move the global audience, and not have have him compete in the final stage.

ただただ、こんな世界の大舞台で弾くかていんの演奏を聴けたこと。そんな舞台で変に作り込まれてなく持ち味の感性全開の演奏を聴けたこと。クラシック以外の活動幅広いけど3次予選まで進むレベルの高さを多くの人に知ってもらえる機会となり、ショパンコンクール参加に感謝です✨

Different expressions, but a more precise interpretation of Chopin, Hayato's music is full of emotions, and there is no doubt that he is a genius.

It doesn't just sound good, but it sounds natural, free, honest, sincere, authentic. This is what differentiates it.

Sumino's artistry knows no bound. I believe as a well instructed pianist, he approaches any piece with an understanding of the composer's background and intentions of the markings in the piece. He internalizes that and tries to bring that out when he plays and which in principle can really bring out the best of every piano piece ever written. That is in in the realm of interpretation. Technically, he is a true prodigy and master of every technical passage you can possibly get him to play. Both are incredible to see in a single pianist. It would not be surprising if he does not medal or conversely even win the competition!

角野さんの葬送聴いて 美しい曲だったんだと思った。 死へ向かう重々しすぎるぐらいの曲なのに。 　で、最近朝日新聞の記事を見て思わずなっとく。 　ルイサダさんに小津安二郎監督の映画のように、飾らず自分のありのままをだしなさいと。 　26歳の青年とって曲の美しさの方に共感してしまうのが自然なのでないかしら。 　おかげでとても好きな曲になりました。また、角野さんが何年か後にはどう弾いてるのか楽しみです。

I seriously think classical piano music need a breakthrough. I personally find Hayato Sumino a very talented pianist. Fell in love with his versatile and beautiful improvisations of his Jazz piano music.

Chopin's competition won by having the privilege to have him there and lost its credibility by being incapable of apreciating something so profound that words can't describe.

３次予選の演奏は、今までの角野さんの演奏とは違うものを感じました。この空間この時間全てが当時のショパンの生きてた時代に変わったというような。 今まで角野さんの演奏は、幾度となく聴いてきましたが、初めての体験でした。それほどに素晴らしかった！！ 以前、マズルカが苦手と仰られてたのが嘘のような絶品のマズルカでした！ 予備予選以降、現地で吸収したものが音となって現れていたと感じました。 また幻ポロは揺らぎのなかに佇む感覚を覚え、ソナタでは気迫を通り越し鬼気迫る演奏に心から震えました。 この名演をリアルタイムで拝聴できたこと、幸せに思います！ ありがとうございました✨✨

I think he was probably the best performer in this competition. I think he knows the true beauty. I think Chopin was also a person with that kind of aesthetics.

ショパンをこよなく愛した角野さんのT大学大先輩の夫満97歳で旅立ちました💧彼の大学時代は特攻隊の生き残りで千葉県稲毛の元T大学運動場の建物で工学部は造兵科となり卒業した。彼のテニス歴🎾は82年、亡くな2年前までプレー🎾角野さんを異色の後輩として耳が遠くて最大限の音で ショパン葬送曲を聞いていました🎹この独特の雰囲気の曲と共に歩んで安らかに昇天したと信じています。角野さん有難う🙇彼は角野さんの演奏を天国から聴きながら応援していると思います👼

Hayato Sumino's piano performance is It made me feel as if Chopin himself was playing the piano. And when he listened to the sonata, tears spilled. After listening to all of Hayato Sumino's performances, I wanted to listen to all the songs that Hayato Sumino has played in the competition so far. I do not know what the jury have to claim against your playing, maybe some technical aspects I can't hear, but what i can hear is your deep a d subtle sense of music, your playing makes me think of Rubinstein in many ways; definitely you are the one I will be listening to the albums of. It is rare to have an old soul speaking through Chopin in this Competitions. Sumino is above and beyond competing. He's talking to us though all his feelings and emotions, Technic is superb but just to help him speak the way he does. Magnificent performance. From Idyllwild California, birn in Argentina... When I was watching the first round.. I was in schock that my favorite youtuber was playing ... 2nd round was even bigger shock how he played ... AND THIS IS THE TOP.. I’ve been watching this video over and over again. His playing was getting better and better each time. I want to listen to his beautiful, emotional and passionate melody all the time. No matter how many times I listen to his piano, I cry. He definitely should have been selected to the finals. In one of his interviews after the third round, he said he was so immersed in the music, he didn’t think about anything else. Maybe Chopin was behind him while he was playing!!!

角野さんの演奏は、フレーズの大きいもの、小さい物などが次々現れて、聴く方の集中が途切れることが有りません。それらが重複していたり、飛んだり、消えそうになったり鮮明に現れたり・・・とにかく胸をかきむしられる、とはこのことだとつくづく思っています。 それにしても、曲の運び方（歌い方）をそのまま演奏に（指先に）反映できる技術というのは、いかなるレベルのものなのでしょうか。想像をはるかに超えています。 日々感動させていただいて本当に感謝です。

YOU ARE GENIUS HAYATO / THERE IS NOTHING TO CHANGE THAT LOVES FROM TURKEY

I got to know Hayato through Chopin Concours. I like Hayato's performance style. Although all performers say they would interpret Chopin differently, they eventually move the same according to a certain manual of interpretation, and run on the same track as they did. However, Hayato's bold interpretation of his own came out on another track nicely. Hayato imagined what it would have been like to be Chopin 200 years ago, possessed by Chopin, and was playing as Chopin of the time. This was very fresh and unique, was more attractive. Chopin is said to have been a composer who plays improvisation for hours, and Hayato looks the most like Chopin. Hopefully Deutsche Grammophon contact Hayato Sumino soon. If there were such a thing, modern Renaissance would occur in classical world.

I am so disappointed that you didn't make the final round at the Chopin competition. Could please post you playing the concerto you would have played even it means with a pre-recorded orchestra? This oversight just means the jury didn't appreciate you the way millions of people do, even other pianists who had you on their lists for who should to be in the final. No doubt you will achieve the success you so deserve.

My favorite part about Cateen’s playing is the fact that he can manage to fill someone like me, who is not a usual connoisseur of classical pieces, with such great emotion just by listening to him play. There’s a deep sense of feeling that goes into his piano playing that reaches into my heart unlike any other pianist I’ve heard. I think that’s such a talent.

In the first round, his sound was delicately quivering. In front of the great Chopin, Sumino was nervous. However, in the third round, his sound got confidence and suppleness! His hands no longer quiver with Chopin's spirit and the discerning audiences. As he commented after the 3rd round, he was there with Shopin to express the music he has. Sumino gains strength and beauty of the sounds with each round. Now, Chopin definitely is in his hart. Bravo. Congratulations!

Hayato Sumino has changed the world I live in with his musicality. I’m living in a post-Sumino world.

He is a true, poetic, deep artist! In the sonata, he uses some similar agogic devices to Pogorelich but it does not sound imitative! The level of his artistry is truly on a high plane!

The performances of Hayato Sumino were stunning and impressive at every round in the Competition. I can’t still understand why he couldn’t go to final. Regardless to say he is so much talented and should be fairly appreciated. He looks like as if he is the reincarnated Chopin. Hope his life with piano be always with happiness and delight.

Haha Cateen doesn't need the Chopin Competition to become a world famous pianist.

This third stage is really great. Especially Sonata is incredible. I've come back here many times and listened repeatedly. Greatest than anyone else's performance.

何でも弾ける角野さんですが、私は彼のクラシックが一番好きです。 こんな格式高いコンクールで弾く曲をストリートでもRU-vidでももっと見たく聴きたくなります。

美しく華やかな2次を聞いたら…またここまでやってきてしまいます。3次は本当に感動しました。特に「葬送」は涙が溢れて心が震えました。以前マスタークラスを受けに来て、ソナタはまだ早いと言われたと読んだことがありましたが、この曲を用意されていたんですね。どれ程真剣にこの曲と向き合われたのか計り知れないほどの努力があったのだろうと…切迫感がある陰鬱さ、それに相反するコラールの様な煌めく荘厳な響き。魂を込めた見事としか言い様がない演奏でした。でも、曲全体を通して悲しさというよりは尊厳というか愛溢れる印象的なものでした。アンコールのつもりで弾いたと仰ってたスケルツォ3番も素晴らしかったです。スケルツォは凄くあなたに合っていますね。本当に素晴らしい演奏でした。本当に何度聞き返しても…これからも何度もここに来ると思います。ありがとうございました☘️

ごく最近角野さんを知って、以来、毎日ここに来ています。 最初の1音から心を持って行かれ、キラキラしたふりそそぐような音色に涙がこぼれます。 角野さんのショパンが聴きたいです。ショパンは角野さんで聴きたいです。1曲でも多くショパンを弾いて下さい。角野さんのショパンをあの世にまで持って行きます。

この演奏はショパン喜んでるだろうなぁ、と感じました この大舞台でこれだけ実力を発揮できるまでに、このコンクールを通して成長されていった姿、カッコ良さが半端なかったです　素敵な演奏をありがとうございました

3次予選の角野さんの演奏、本当にすばらしかったです！ 美しく透明感のある音色、心地よいリズム、即興が得意な角野さんだからこそ生まれる自由な感覚、光の妖精が舞い遊ぶような軽やかさと煌びやかさ、慟哭するような苦悩、切なさ、喜びも悲しみも人間のあらゆる感情を深く描き出す表現力、一気にクライマックスへ駆け上がっていく熱量、洗練された気品のある表現、ショパンへの愛、、、角野さんの演奏が持つ素晴らしさがここに来て存分に発揮されたように思います。いつまでも何度でも聴いていたいです。 ピティナ広報さんの角野さんへのインタビューより抜粋 「自分の感覚として、自分が弾くと言うよりも、ショパンの音楽がある場所に自分がいる。ただいるっていう感覚にどんどんなっていた。ただそのホールの中でショパンの音楽が鳴っている喜びを感じている。自分が無になるような感覚、本当にその音楽に集中しているみたいな感覚を味わえた。今日は特別な経験だった。」

Words cannot do this justice. It is clear to me he wasn't playing to win, per se; but to transcend and connect us mere mortals with the sublime. The competition is just a way to get it out there into the world. So lost in the music flowing from his fingertips, he was playing as both servant and master. I am humbled, honored and grateful to be witness.

What an intense performance. The Marche funèbre and that look into "mortality" shook me to the core. He was completely absorbed into Chopin´s music. I will never forget this. Bravo !

The performance of the third round makes you want to listen to it over and over again, and it's nailed to the appearance of playing! I think I could feel Chopin's sparkle in every song I saw at Sumino's RU-vid channel that I listened to at the concert. Gentle, sad and beautiful music, Chopin's soul will continue to be heard in Sumino's music! Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to reaffirm the wonderfulness of Chopin's music.

きれいな鮮明で優しく自然に響く音、聴いていると一緒に心も踊ってしまい心奪われ、今まで聴いたことないショパンでした。私の中では世界一だと思いました。心がとても幸せにいっぱいになれました。
