Hello Cellists,
Joy, bravura, and humor continue into the second solo section of Haydn’s C Major Concerto (mvt. I), soon after where I left off in last week’s masterclass. We reach a stormy section that sounds very much like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and remain in the minor key until the next ritornello and charming return.

I'm a cellist, and your videos are really helpful! May I ask why you skipped a bit after bar 88? It's one of my favorite parts.

Hi Kimon, thanks very much. I usually try to find spots where new “issues” or difficulties come up or I point out places where I see something unusual or interesting. Please let me know if there is something in particular that you would like me to talk about? Is it Bars 88-89 or later in the movement?

Inbal Segev I was mostly curious just about your interpretations and because it’s my favorite spot in the movement. I hope the second movement is coming soon!

Hi Inbal! As always, your videos are sooo enlightening! I wanted to ask you about the right hand on the passage in bars 67-70. I'm having trouble for it to sound clear yet "forceful". My teacher told me I'm stressing my arm. I see you using alot of wrist, could it be? I think I'm using more of my forearm and my wrist gets a little stiff. Thing is that if I loosen my wrist alot I lose some bow control. Any tips? Sorry for the long comment

If I try to make it "forceful" it sounds kinda dirty

Hi Pedro, thank for writing. I use some wrist but not too much. It is rather the fingers of the right hand that should stay supple. Try practicing this passage playing on the string. The bouncing will come later and only if your hand is relaxed. Weight should be applied. Try playing spiccato on open strings so you can focus on your right hand. Also, feel free to send me a short- 2 minute video though my website/unpublished youtube link, maybe I can see what the problem is.
