Where words end, music begins. Where music ends, the silence speaks volumes. Haydn, like Mozart and Beethoven, has reached the point where nothing more can or needs to be said, the summit of a lifetime of crafting sound.

Hayden’s string quartets show that music can be both a hundred percent abstraction as well as a hundred percent emotion

Currently working through Op64 on the way to Op76. Every Haydn quartet is a joy to play and this one is no exception. Life would be poorer without this wonderful canon of music.

Haydn is such an adagio king

I personally think this one quartet is more beautiful than most nicknamed ones.

Mr Preuss you and me both! Nature is described in every second of this quartet!

unusual experimental. 1st mvt theme and var. 2nd mvt fantasy with wild modulations 3rd mvt trio has a study in ascending and descending scales. 4th mvt irregular rhythms

Howard Chasnoff If I don't tap something (for example my feet) I get lost in the 4th movement. The rhythms are indeed irregular. God only knows how they sounded in Haydn's lifetime.

One can learn much from Haydn.

1796/7 I can get away with this, I am Haydn. Weird and totally wonderful.

Since this hasn't been given a nickname, as so many Haydn quartets have, I'll offer one: "The Stairway", since the first movement begins with a rising motif that suggests climbing stairs, while the final movement starts with descending notes, as though one is now going back down the same steps.

What are the mountains in the background? The :"Rosaliengebirge" ? Because Haydn lived and worked there, in the eastern part of todays Austria. And who is the painter?

+shnimmuc Not true! This music will be appreciated forever :) But I know what you mean. Sometimes other works get the praise while pieces like this take the backburner. True fans will always listen to this stuff as well, though

After a bit of digging it seems to be called 'summer', apparently it was included in the first exhibition of pieces rejected from the salon... If you Google "monet summer" you'll find it

+Glynn Wright Nope, I left before it could. My preference in string quartets drifts more toward Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" -- probably a bit too advanced for a shallow, commoner's mind such as yours.
@Perpendosi
@Perpendosi 8 лет назад
+Fox Fetterworth Haydn's String quartets are as inspiring as Schubert's. Don't act like a snob. These are all divine masterpieces. Do you like Schubert's 15th String Quartet? It has some of the most heartrending moments.

+Fox Fetterworth Ha, this work is actually in many ways more advanced than the Schubert one. It sounds like late Haydn might be a bit over your head
