You are so kind and patient. My 24 year old son has autism. We drove an hour away to the stylist my husband had been going to since high school. It took 3 attempts just sitting in the chair before he would let her cut his hair. She retired 7 years ago. Hair cuts are still a challenge, but the foundation created by good experiences with a kind and patient stylist has made such a difference. Thank you for using your gift in this way. You are making a difference!

Mr. Vernon reads energy well. Mom was completely nervous and traumatized from recent haircut attempts. Mom kept her child engaged with words of praise and a promise dad would be proud. Mr. Vernon didn't verbally engage the child as much as he normally does. It all worked out well.

I love how this mother spoke to her son! This is how I should have been when my kids were this young. There were a few things she did that I do remember doing with my kids that worked as well. The being in tune with and anticipating his needs / reactions. And staying one step ahead of him while helping him excersise self help and self aware ness tools and self calming techniques. I now strive to be just like her with my youngest, and any current child that I interact with.

Ive had to cancel many hair appts bc my son freaks out. We found a guy that he likes so now he goes easier. I tried to pay him for the missed appts but he refused. Hes really calm and has a small space with only him. No other stimulus. So its good for now.

I have a firm belief that these children are victims at birth, victims of society, victims of the system and victims of the government. It is an uphill battle to get the benefits and therapies they need and deserve. We as parents of special needs children need to be informed and supported by each other when we accomplish getting them services and help anyone that is starting the process.

In your spare time :-) I need you to come work in the Special Education world with us to be in an Autism classroom! Our kiddos need kind souls like you and we would be so blessed for our kiddos to have a man to look up to!

A suggestion that has helped me is earplugs or headphones to muffle sound. I know that doesn't work for everyone.

Try putting your smaller/shorter clients in a booster seat or on a platform to raise them higher without having to ask them to put their heads down. It is a hit or miss. Maybe helpful. FYI. God bless you
