God, as someone with crazy social anxiety, that ending sounds like my worst nightmare. "Hey, you know that thing you do all the time as a way to show positivity? Ya, everyone around you hates it and thinks you're just being an asshole. It's been 8 years and we're only telling you now, lol." I mean, I know everyone meant well, but I feel so bad for Stephen, lmao.

I'm with Stephen on the thumbs up thing. I usually use it as "I want you to know that I have seen and understand your message, but I have nothing to add to bring the conversation further." Sometimes I use it in a sarcastic way, but if I do, the entire message is sarcastic, and it is in no way the fault of the thumb.

I'll just state I have never once in my life used 👍 passive aggressively or with passive aggressive intentions so hearing that people perceive it that way is wild to me. Granted, I've also never sent a 👍at the end of a sentence. I've only ever used it on its own separately as a "Yes," or "That's cool for me," or "I'm good," response to someone else's question.

I'm with Stephen on the thumbs-up thing. I used to use the thumbs-up emoji to indicate that I understood/agreed and one of my co-workers said "I hate it when people use that emoji. It feels rude." and my world was in shambles. 👍

Haley is correct about sunscreen *except* indoors. If you are usually more than 1m away from direct sunlight coming through a window, you are unlikely to experience more than 1% of the original amount of UV radiation than you would standing outside in direct sun. If you have the sun shining directly on you through a close window, such as when driving, then yes, you do need sunscreen. But otherwise, get your sunscreen on all exposed skin every day!

There is a certain unspoken etiquette (that varies on region, clique, and age-group) around emoji, emoticons, and various net/mobile idiosyncrasies. It can be difficult to parse.

Also autistic, I guess I might use it that way occasionally?? For example "feeling great right now 👍👍👍"; the excess of emojis sort of implies false positivity which makes the tone sound sarcastic to me. Majority of the time I use it genuinely though. If we're on the topic of passive aggressive emojis though this blank smile is definitely that for me 🙂

My dad is a great man, he's 60, he works at the local post office and he's been having a lot of problems lately with his neck after a work injury, and he hasn't been able to get treatment yet, but through it all, almost 3 years of seemingly no end to the pain in sight, he continues to be jovial, helpful, wise, kind, and encouraging to others. Not to mention willing to try new things and help new people. He may get irritable sometimes because he's in pain, but I love my dad to the ends of the earth, and the world is a better place with him in it. I don't know where I'd be without him. Love you, Dad.

Hayley's dad is the dad all dads strive to be. Every dad wishes they could be cool enough dads to have a picture of them holding an owl; the pinnacle of coolness a dad could reach. My biggest regret in life is having a dad that has yet to have a picture of him holding an owl. It may happen one day, but for the time being my dad could only dream of reaching the level of cool-daditude reached by Hayley's dad.

I was as confused as Stephen about the thumbs up thing at first, but then Alex mentioned it being used to punctuate a person's own suggestion and Stephen didn't deny using the thumbs up like that. That definitely sounds passive aggressive lol. I only ever use a thumbs up as a reply to someone else to agree with them or say that everything's all good, not ever in reference to something I said.

I'm totally with Stephen on the 👍. I usually use it to confirm I received a text and/or agree with the content. Ex: "I should be there around 6." "👍" Sometimes I'll send a full "Sounds good 👍". But I've never thought of it as being passive aggressive. And since it's topical, my dad uses the 👍 in the exact same way.

Damn I actually feel bad for Stephen at the end. I also totally disagree with Hayley tbh. If someone is unaware of social cues then they can't participate in them knowingly, that's impossible. You can't hold someone accountable for saying something sarcastically if they didn't mean it sarcastically. I also don't think Stephen is clever enough to lie about something like that, or that he has any reason to lie. Some people just miss things or information if it's never directly said to them, even late into their lives.

I will describe my dad. He looks like Ned Flanders and is kind and friendly like him except not religious. He likes car, guitars, science fiction and politics. I have seen him truly angry maybe like twice in my life.
