The song "Pie Jesu" is taken from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem" , sung by Hayley Westenra, who was 15 then. "Pie Jesu" is originally sung by Sarah Brightman.
For her, especially at 15, to have the ability to seamlessly float up to the high note as well as possess the nuanced tone quality in some of her vowels (such as when she comes down to "requiem"), is unique and remarkable. Plus look at the venue she commands!
Her voice has the melody embroidered with all the notes knotted like jewels. Sparkeling, I hope it heals all the heartless beings and knife sharp coldness who dont even deserve the name of art.
I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH HER!!! I remember in Intermediate school we had a production and she was backstage when she started singing, I was blown away, we're so proud of you Hayley!!
There have been quite a number of renditions of this wonderful classic by Andrew Lloyd Webber, among which were such notable performances as the ones by Sarah Brightman, Jackie Evancho, Sissel, and Charlotte Church. All of these were truly beautiful. But this one by the teenage Hayley Westenra rises above them all. The clarity, pitch as well as the tempo are utterly perfect. Even Hayley herself has never matched her younger self in later years. In the video it seems that even the sun and the wind pay homage to Hayley’s presentation as they softly play about her face. And when Hayley switches on her loveliest of smiles at the end you will smile back! You will!
This is the most beautiful rendition of Pie Jesu I have ever heard. She sings so effortless. And her face doesn't look painful like other opera singers
Hahley, You are one of the best female voices ever heard in the recorded history.and an incredible beauty.. Absolutely the most beautiful rendition of this song ever... True voice of an angel.
Sweet bloody Jesus, she's everything music should be....... That girl could stop world wars just by standing in between opposing sides and singing a takeaway menu ☺
She possesses angelic vocal chords and a sweet smile. The crowd was transfixed by this performance, and it takes the right kind of singer to do it the way it was intended to be sung.
Most beautiful song....but Hayley, you add another element....the power of your voice not only captivates our every breath but bring tears of emotion to our eyes.... i feel blessed just to listen to you! Proud to be a kiwi :P
@@phillies4100_mainsite It was watching this video of Hayley, years ago, that took me to Jackie. A post in this commentary that I almost disregarded, that would have been a serious mistake.
@@phillies4100_mainsite Jackie Evancho would be a better fit for Meg in the Phantom of the Opera, who is Christine's blonde friend. She's also too young for that role.
I just found out about Hayley.i was just looking through songs and i found her version of Ava Maria. And fell in love. She and Charlotte Church are beautifully wonderful singers.
Her poise at such a young age is incredible. This is one of the most beautiful performances a person will ever see. I’m sure the entire crowd never forgot. These moments in life are rare. All the elements, not just the singing. Her cute sweet smile and joy midway through. So incredibly sweet.
what a great rendition of a great song and, this from a 15 yr old girl, Hayley westernra was and still is brilliant, any one who as disliked this version really do have an hearing problem and need to visit their GP at there earliest convenience.
There are many renditions of Pie Jesu, but this is by far the most natural, effortless, most beautiful and most angelic of them all! And that from a 15 year old girl (Hayley still has one of the purest and angelic voices)! Love it!
I have heard talented Chinese young girl with voice like this, but their talents can not being seen like this with a rich community sporting them to be viewed in public.
Jackie and Hayley are both amazing in their own way. I do not prefer one over the other, although if I am looking to listen to opera, my first choice is Hayley. But that is more out of habit and a liking for the songs she sings such as "May It Be" and the likes. Hayley does have a very angelic and pure voice and I enjoy it very much.
You all should take into account that this performance is about 8 years old! Hayley is now 23 and her voice has matured quite a bit since then. And she never said she was trying to be an opera singer. Her voice was natural, with not much vocal training at that point. I will say that I very much enjoy Jackie's performance of this song, too.
Hayley sounds grate do not get me wrong. In my opinion Jackie prduces notes that to me onley ANGELS sing, that go right to my soul, and make tears appear.
I still come back to this performance by her every now and then...What I have always loved about her voice is that very few Sopranos can go high in the scale without sounding "piercing" if anyone gets my meaning...And Haley is one of those few...If she had gone into acting/opera, I think she would have made an excellent Christine in POTO...
While people are discussing about her talent...I just feel the grace of an angel who was sent by God to talk about the Jesus Grace! This is just amazing, specially when you hear it with your heart and not only with your ears! It brings me to tears...perfection...
Now Hayley is Singing with Celtic Woman. I remember her when she was Young and her first Big Hit Record and now twenty years later she still sings like an Anger..
Charles Copeland Thanks for the suggestion. I listened to Sissel, then Westenra, then Sissel again. Sissel's very good, but thoughts of an angel did not come to mind. I think Westenra has an advantage of youth in what I think is a more spontaneous performance. Look at her face, and her posture. And I think it's reflected in her voice. She seems to me more natural, more into the song. And I think her voice is simply better, it surprises me. I don't get that with Sissel. Maybe, another day, I would. In any case, I have to say, while I'm not any kind of trained musician, dismissing Westenra's performance, as compared to Sissel's, as burlesque is absurd.
Best singer in my favourite hymn Haley I love this and I wish I could sing like you got to played on my funeral!!! Jesus Christ my saviour my beautiful saviour!!! God in a BAD sinner!!!! Save me lord xxx
+@@lesb_socal She was even able to hit the high D in "Quanta Qualia". I would really, really recommend listening to this song with headphones to avoid any distractions, inner and outer ones, when you can spare some time for one of the most shockingly beautiful experiences of what a human voice can achieve. Otherworldly beauty and purity. Enjoy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S8QVe7d3q8U.html I can also recommend her "Bridal Ballad", amongst many many other songs. Best wishes!

I am watching and listening to this in loving memory and respect for my Gran who passed last night aged 91yrs. She had a strong faith so am just listening to this for comfort really. Sounds truely beautiful.
Woah ironic! I performed this song when I was 15 too! Only difference is that she performed it for a huge crowd, mine was just for my cousin's wedding haha kind of a big difference...
@MusicalFantasy2010 Hayley was 14 at the time of this performance. Jackie still has a long way to go in four years to achieve this level of performance.
