In 1788, David Thompson was working for Hudson’s Bay Company when he suffered an accident, breaking his leg so badly he almost died. But he didn’t die. It took him a year to learn to walk again. And in that year, he spent his time studying astronomy, navigation, and map-making. He looked at the maps at Hudson’s Bay Company, where he worked, and dreamed about what lay beyond their unfinished borders. He decided he wanted to finish those maps. And he did. David Thompson became the greatest map-maker who ever lived, travelling 90,000 kilometres throughout North America, and mapping 4.9 million square kilometers along the way.

You can't talk about David Thompson without also talking about Peter Fidler and Philip Turnor -- two other HBC men that were perhaps equally as important as Thompson, they just don't get the same recognition because as explorers, they came a little later than Thompson. Peter Fidler (my ancestor) also played a major role in the founding of the Red River Settlement as chief surveyor, and was also the first person to officially document the Metis flag and the battle of seven oaks.

Pretty interesting. Of course, I'm blown away by Thompson's incredible history, but wise enough to know that there NUMEROUS names and faces that never receive recognition. Thanks for the references. Starting to take the dive into the history of the North American fur-trade. To say that I'm fascinated by the history, is an understatement.

Have you read the story (Map Maker) written by Kerry Wood? It is a terrific read.

While he recovered from that broken leg he was an apprentice to Phillip Turnor -- my 5th great grandfather. He would teach Thompson everything he knew about cartography. It was Turnor who was the first surveyor sent by the Hudson's Bay Company to Rupertsland. He trained both Peter Fidler and David Thompson.

I hope you do more of these. You brought stories of people and events I have read about to life. AWSOME!

Thompson is an ancestor on my fathers side. This video is incorrect, he broke his leg near Pine Island Saskatchewan. Pine Island does not have the rocky mountainous terrain shown in this vignette.

HBC, please add a piece on Philip Turnor, the first navigator/astronomer appointed to HBC by Sir William Wales. Turnor journeyed with Samuel Hearne as well is the person who taught David Thompson his navigation and astronomy skills at Cumberland House, while he recovered from his broken leg. Philip Turnor deserves significant recognition in helping create/map what is today, known as Canada. I hope you may consider it.

If you're referring to the indigenous people, they didn't travel anywhere near as far as he did. His native companions never crossed the rocky mountains before. David Thompson had great respect for the natives though and even married a half cree woman
