Last night's episode of Succession was truly a jaw-dropping event - it was some of the most compelling TV I've ever seen and captured such truth in how that moment would go down.
I've cried at a handful of movies in my entire life and I cried multiple times throughout the episode. It was so real and watching these broken people attempt to handle this major death was heartbreaking. Roman refusing to believe it and attempting to lean on anyone but getting help from no one.
The ending of hotd with rhenrya kid and this episode are why I love hbo. Epic story telling. Succession just broke through the ceiling, can’t wait for the rest of the season.
@Richie Rich You haven't read the "book", I'm guessing, because the whole of HotD's story is told from the point-of-view of various maester's in the form of a history lesson over roughly only 750 pages... It lacks detail, has practically zero dialogue, and displays clear bias based on who is 'writing'.
@@mwilsonUT which is why you don’t make it into a show. The book is a history book written to parallel asoiaf, as well as to itch the procrastination of GRRM. House of the dragon season 1 was average at best.
@@mwilsonUT Your absolutely right, as an advid reader of the book and and short stories, I thought the first season was brilliant. It was like reading a history book and then time traveling back to witness it live.
Regarding Succession, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) trying to setup a conference call was the best part for me. Conference calls is all he knows how to do and when you have no control of a bad situation you do what you know because you’re panicking. Which plays into the rest of this video about studios just recycling what they have.
Love the idea of a news-type show on the channel Dan! I've always enjoyed the smaller one off videos like the Sight & Sound list or Warner/DC videos of the past, I think it makes sense to condense those all into a single video per week that could also hit on more topics. Still feels surreal to be watching this final season of Succession week to week, it's a privilege to be watching one of the best shows I've ever seen with everyone else every Sunday night and they continue to hit the mark every week! Gonna be sad to say goodbye but I have a lot of faith in this writers room
In fact, you talk about the Marauders. Always good to remember that theybwere cut from movies too. Is not just SPEW. That were huge and important plot points that were left out. The final confrotation between Harry and Voldermot in the books is one of the best final showdown between hero and villain that I ever read and in the movies it was reduce to a battle between a green beam and a red beam, DBZ style. Maybe if the series is a sucess they can do a Marauders series after they have, you know, actually introduce them to non readers.
I love the idea for this show. As a busy person, it's information that I would like to know but have no time to research myself. I think doing it this way we'll keep your videos concise and focused! Thanks Dan!
I think Harry Potter would work better as an animated show instead of live action. There would be so much more they can do and could serve the usage of magic so well.
Counterpoint on Moana: the 2019 remake of The Lion King didn't do anything unexpected, and also brought back one of the key stars from the original version (James Earl Jones), and it's the ninth-highest grossing film of all time. I'm not thrilled that Disney is already remaking Moana, but if The Lion King is any indicator, then it will likely make a lot of money.
I just spent the whole episode convinced it was a prank, or some big scheme from Logan. But I'm still in shock and cant't quite believe that he's actually dead. Incredible episode.
what a great episode of Sucession I did not see that coming! at 1st I was so confused since it didn't make sense and seemed weird to me they didn't show Logan having his heart attack felt like what they have to do when an actor dies in real life but that's what makes it so great felt so real!! I had to get this call when my mom died unexpectedly (she had cancer) hearing Shiv on the phone broke me!!!
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is an Oscar award-winning director of short films. Let's not undermine that by just saying she directed Ms. Marvel and "some other" Disney stuff.
3:33 Twice sadly. Both times shockingly close to arriving home to have to tell a parent who was going to be absolutely shattered by it. Anyway, love the new show format.
Love this new show. I'm always hungry for new Dan content so something like this once a week or even every couple of weeks if it's a slow news week is great for me
I take everything on Disney's investor calls with a grain of salt. That's where we were promised "the best fighter pilot movie of all time". I mean we did indeed get that, but from Paramount, not Disney. I have way more faith in Lucasfilm releasing those three movies because they were announced at Celebration compared to the Moana remake and that's saying something.
What I loved about Logan's death is that Logan created this extremely toxic environment/culture for the people around him, but they still had to follow in line behind him or face punishment. Now that he is gone, there are no more rules. All tactics/moves are available to these people and all these characters can now become unhinged to win. The remainder of this season will be brilliant chaos.
I loved that little moment, because it also speaks to the powerlessness that they all feel. Ken is asking him to put him on with the pilots to get the plane home faster, something that they both know can't be done. So much of the episode was about powerful people being confronted with true helplessness, maybe for the first time. Such great writing and acting.
Hope this new Monday show stays! The succession episode was definitely one of the best episodes of television ever! We get to have 7 episodes of the fall out which is going to be delicious!
Hey Dan! Wondering if you've seen HBO's Barry. It's one of my favorite shows to date and with season 4 starting this past weekend I'm very curious about your thoughts on it.
Only mystery with Moana is whether they change the "Your welcome" song when it mentions his hair or if they put a big wig on the Rock.... I would watch it if the Rock is in a wig..
I agree it was a brilliant idea to kill off Logan early in the season. We knew he had to die at some point, but now we have 7 eps left to watch the scrambling, infighting and dealing that the siblings will have to maneuver, and whether one of them will come out on top....
I have Charts on Tuesday. And Streaming Charts on Wednesday. Then reviews likely on Thurs/Friday. This is the best day for my schedule and the channel’s
What if Indy only gets robed into this movie because of Short Round, played by Ke Huy Quan, who is now a treasure hunter himself? Though, I would rather see him get his own Disney+ show in the Indiana Jones universe.
Really hoping that they have held back on giving away too much in the Barbie trailer because they are confident that the surprise will be worth it. The Jurassic World movies, by contrast, overpromised and underdelivered, such that if a movie looks like it's given away all its best action/jokes/reveals in the teaser, my sister and I now say "all the dinosaurs were in the trailer"
Succession, I'm sure you're a fun watch but have something far more important to discuss. I need someone whose opinion I trust.... Do I spend my hard earned money on Paramount + to watch this last season of Picard or not? is it any good?? please help
Maybe this wasn't age well.....Logan isn't Dead. The assistant almost guarantees that when she came to them and everytime she was started talking they shut her down, he's testing everyone around him.....again...
I think it's only the first one in a build up of live action fims in a Disney universe after the post credits scene reveal that the same universe as moana is gonna contain a live action Frozen and a live action Tangled and they probably like Brave and they will all cross over together and team up vs some big beam in a sky villain.
@@stephenschofield577 it’s the season 6 finale where [spoilers for GoT ahead] Cersei blows up the sept, Arya kills Frey, Bran finds out who Jon’s mom is, Jon becomes King in the North, Cersei becomes Queen, Tyrion becomes Dany’s hand, Dany sails to Westeros
I’ve always felt like the brilliance of succession is that major events feel both surprising and inevitable at the same time… Love the idea for the show!
Harry Potter and Moana remakes smacks of desperation of me from Disney and Warner Bros, What I dont understand is how they will adapt the first 2 Harry potter books into full seasons, as the books are quite short and most of the books were included in the movies.
I think Roman is the brightest of the bunch. And his reaction was very reasonable : it takes a doctor, a coroner, a competent medic, to declare someone officially dead. Not just any dude present on the scene.
Thanks so much for the time stamps, Dan! I haven’t started watching Succession yet, but I definitely want to. I briefly considered skipping this video entirely, but I had a feeling that you’d provide a way for viewers to avoid any spoilers - and you did! I watch all of the content on your channel and I usually don’t mind getting your full take on things I haven’t seen yet, but I’d prefer to go into that one knowing as little as possible.
Truly one of the most brilliant episodes of television I’ve ever witnessed. Would love some more Succession coverage, since you’re clearly very passionate about the show as well! Maybe a full season review when the series finale airs?
Lucasfilm seems to commit to creatives on Star Wars movies and then back away when those creatives have some form of setback. If Indiana Jones doesn't work in the way they expect, do they back away from Mangold too or does his experience push him though regardless?
With your talk about embracing the new instead of churning out the old - makes me wonder your thoughts on Trek. The Trek “industry” just can’t seem to escape TOS era, from the films, to DSC, to SNW (to design elements in PIC, which seem more updated 23rd C phasers, etc, than 24th C going into 25th). Obviously there’s a variety of quality - but interested in your thoughts. With the new Academy show (and the Section 31 show which is Definitely Happening 😂), what are your reflections?
I totally agree about the Lucas film strategy. It feels as if they are confident going in to this next phase. I hope they don’t listen to the twitter/Reddit trolls.
That Barbie trailer gave me such horror movie vibes. It might have just been the repeating line in the song, but with that and the multiple barbies and kens and the world being mostly made out of toys it just gave me such an eerie feeling that I can't shake
Succession nailed exactly how it feels to lose someone, suddenly, via phonecall. They played out each narrative that most family and friends go through. Another amazing episode.
YES! SJU used to be my movie news source, then they stopped doing news for some reason. I've been trying to find a replacement for a while, but none of them live up to the standards of... well... Dan.
I 100% get the point that Studios should stop remaking their properties so often. On the other hand for years I was saying that the best format for a Harry Potter book adaptation is a TV series where each season tells the story of each book. This is because the films reasonably cut a lot of parts from the books purely because of time. I get that some people might argue that these are details but in reality the bits about the magic lessons, the walks at Hogsmit, Quidich practice etc are the things that flesh out this amazing world and make the Harry Potter series so captivating and interesting. A TV series would allow for these moments and little stories to be seen without dragging the plot. The only problem is that as Dan said the film series ended only like 10 years ago and the cast was so good that it feels weird remaking them now. It would be great if they park this for a bit and release it in 2030 or something like that.
On social media, reactions are very loaded. Neutral reactions are buried by melodrama. People have realized that they can sway discussions by being extreme.
I already had Dan's first news item spoiled by a Tweet about Dan's second news item. I was reading about the potential HBO Potter series and a wiseacre remarked that, since he was now out of a job, Brian Cox would make a great Dumbledore.
