I always feel very emotional when CSAR is mentioned. Full of admiration, it is so inspiring to consider specialists who are devoted to rescuing war fighters after things have gone badly wrong. When they are vulnerable and need a helping hand.

This is the plane for the job, isn't it? 1950s design. Does the job! I can only imagine, over the 50+ years of service, there must have been times when the troubled Boys heard the low Buzz, they must have felt elated!

I left the Army after a decade, and turned down a Warrant Officer opportunity to fly helos, in order to finish out my career as an Enlisted Combat Search And Rescueman. I became a Rescue Flight Engineer on the last 4 of the MC-130P's in the inventory, configured for CSAR (the FrankenHERK). MY fini flight...my last active duty flight before retiring, was the flight that put the VERY LAST of the MC-130P Combat Shadows...to bed. I called aloud the Engine Shutdown Checklist for tail # 66-0212, the last Shadow, in the presence of some rather old men at the old former Castle AFB museum...these old fellas wearing sime ballcaps with some very special pins and ribbons adornng them. See, old Two One Two, once upon a time, went the callsign "LIME 01" while flying her helicopter air to air refueling part in the famous Son Tay Raid, And these old men used to wear soft green berets in place of those ballcaps. I was insanely honored to put that Iron Lady, as well as my CSAR flying Career, to bed that day (27 Nov 2018), on that way...and I myself retired in early 2020. If I said I didn't miss it ... ... my nose would start to grow. "These Things We Do ... That Others May Live" -FARVA

All I have to say is WOW. The old girl has come a long way. I retired in 1997 after 26 years as a C-130 instructor loadmaster. I flew E and H models accumulating over 5,000 hrs. And the VA still says my hearing is okay. It was my honor and privilege to serve. Thank you Erik Johnston for bringing back some fond memories. AND THE ROLLERS TURN OVER? Now that is a feature we wish we had back then.

Can't believe how high tech these things are now. It makes my think once you have a good platform just keep upgrading it rather than reinventing the wheel
@MrBignlittle

From what I've gathered from aviation engineers that I've known, that's pretty normal. I remember a friend who works at GE was super excited to develop a new engine. Most of what they did was design modification and refinement of older platforms. Another retired (Northrop Grumman or Rolls Royce?) engineer I once talked to was talking about how they were so proud of helicopter engine they designed in the late 60's and how the base engine was still widely used, just in a much later iteration.

Everyone always talks about the B-52 when it comes to long-serving airplanes. This airplane has been IN CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION since 1954, is currently in use by about 75% of the world's air forces, and, fills about 30 separate roles. From it's original medium transport role, electronic warfare, aerial refueling, intelligence gathering, storm chasing, you name it. It may not be fast, it may not be "sexy", but, it is the BEST aircraft ever designed!

Pretty crazy radar und radio systems. Like a little flying base. Put enough food and supplementary fuel and a few spare partd in there and these guys can survive a Apokalypse and live on this thing and afterwards find signs of life anywhere. Really really crazy. Even more true when it comes to aircraft carriers and bigger military ships in general

Heard that plane over the sky here (Poland) for the first time some time in March 2022. That heavy buzzing sound of 4 propellers immediately had my attention. Dropped all, checked the flightradar app, and got this beutifull buzzard (OTIS71 - to the inquisitive ones) Now I hear or see this plane every other day as the sky obove me here seems to be on it's regular route. Regardless of the fact the plane is here for not-a-great reason - It's still a treat to see it in action. And more so, it's a great treat to find out more about this Beautiful Bird from people who actually operate it. (Great Channel!) Visually, This Plane reminds me of a fat marine mammal: an overweight dolphin or a slim beluga - fat, big but very swift. That giant tail fin -- I had to ask google about it :D Back to MSFS... :]

While the 130 and 160 are cloesly related in mission rating and capabilities it sure is nice to know that we´ll get some of the newly build ones, because those 160´s are just too damn old now.
