Are the new Sennheiser HD 620S the best closed-back headphones on the market today? Why does the HD 620S appear to be in the HD 500 series chassis and is the HD 620S just another version of our classic HD 569? What about the frequency response?
We answer all of those questions in this episode of Beyond the Curve, “live” from HIGH END Munich, with a very special guest host, Jude Mansilla from @headfi.
Join us for a discussion about closed-back headphones and a “no secrets” look at our latest edition to the audiophile family, the HD 620S.

I purchased the Sennheiser HD 620's and it does sound very open for a closed back, it stages really well, not being in your head, I own the HD 569 too and that has a very closed in your head sound, the HD 620's is definitely an upgrade with it's sound in terms of resolution, detail retrieval, imaging, soundstage and dynamics.

The design and engineering team that worked on the Sennheiser HD400 Pro deserves an award. I don't think it is possible to make a more accurate sounding headphone than the HD400 Pro.

My HD600 is my standard I judge all other headphones against. I have wanted a closed version for a long time and the HD620s sounds perfect to me. I compared them back and forth and noticed the differences...bass is better and goes lower with more authority than the 600. Transient response sounds better too and the increase in sensitivity is most welcome! It has superior soundstaging. Just a wonderful addition to the lineup. Your explanation about the treble was great in the video. I always thought the 600 was a bit hot from 5 to 8k or so and the 620 works better for me there. I have a lot of Sennheiser headphones. HD280pro, HD300pro, HD26Pro, HD25 Pro and many more. This HD620s zooms to the top of the list among the closed sets and I am delighted with it. I like my HD560s too! But open backs are poor for radio/engineering work...too much leakage. Well done.

This is great, I like hearing explanations behind the thought process. I ordered these, I hope my big ears will fit. A lot of people can't use open back because privacy reasons, especially since working from home is now more common so it's great to get something like this. It's nice to have a headset to be able to play games on and use for calls (with a separate mic ofc) and listen to music. Imaging and soundstage are important to us for video games, maybe Jermo is more of a music only guy but please keep it in mind. I wish you lean more into made in EU branding. Your products are made in EU, it speaks to quality, you should use it. They look and feel premium

@@sennheiser I was thinking of John Mayall Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton. I ordered HD 600 along with HD 620s and those will compliment HD 620s really well for when I'm listening music or playing guitar or for when I don't care as much about sound leaking. I had to treat myself a bit, I'm sure you understand. For HD 600 first album will be an unplugged one, probably Alice in Chains

I was thinking about buying it, but it makes me unsure how much you have to explain why there was a design that didn't fit in a series and why the sound is good for us, even if many people don't think so based on the tests. The overall picture became a bit confusing after that.

Hello. I kindly ask you, please, please re-produce Sennheiser HD 800 first generation textile pads again. They were truly miracles. Unfortunately, alcantra pads are very weak in terms of psycho-acoustics. Enjoy your work.

I just purchased the 620s and I'm very impressed with the soundstage, frequency response, and timbre. They seem identical in sound compared to my HD 58X Jubilee. Really the biggest difference is the way they feel on my head. The clamping force is significantly less with the 620s. I got used to the strong clamp force of my 58X and the 620s feels less secure on my head. Was a reduced clamp force part of the design? Thanks.
@zoltantoth1566
@zoltantoth1566 28 дней назад
Did you just acknowledge the phenomenon that is know as "lingering"? When you explained why the closure introduces the elongation of the sound in time and hence the psycho-acoustical effect. This is important, because in the forums people are fighting with each other whether lingering does really exists or not. Some people say that headphones are "minimum-phase" devices and hence lingering may not be real.
@sennheiser
@sennheiser 26 дней назад
I'm not a big fan of the minimum-phase argument, because it implies that only frequency response in the audible spectrum matters in headphones. Yet everyone would tell you that electrostatic headphones have a distinct sound, regardless of the frequency response. As to the lingering effect in the earcup: It's a theory of mine built on the analogy of the effects of mechanical damping of transducers. Highly dampened transducers tend to sound more subdued/forgiving in the treble, even with the same amplitude as a less dampened transducer. The HD 490 PRO uses a transducer with high mechanical damping compared to the HD 650. In subjective tests, most subjects would rate the HD 650 as having more treble, even though that's not true based on amplitude alone. At any rate, very theoretical discussions without listening impressions are in my opinion not very efficient, since psychoacoustic effects play a large role and are not as easily defined as hard physics. Kind regards, Jermo

I have a honnest qwestion. how to the momentum 4 (wired and without ANC) compair to the HD620's in trems of frequency response and passive soundstage. I own a pair of the momentum 4 and enjoy them, i did tune the base down a little but wonder if the passive soundstage is a lot better with the HD620 and if it is better to jump to a openback series instead for the soundstage. Thanks in advance
@sennheiser
@sennheiser 28 дней назад
First, thank you for adding the M4 to your collection! The soundstage on MOMENTUM 4 is wide, but not as panoramic as HD 620S, to our ears; M4 gives you a little more "center of the head" but is still quite enjoyable. HD 620S has nice bass definition and reach, but is a "cooler" and more neutral profile compared to M4. We feel the HD 620S has some of the best imaging, open OR closed, in a headphone.
@zoltantoth1566
@zoltantoth1566 28 дней назад
Does base need inner or outer closing? Does the basy headphone need to have a full back plastic cover or does the ear-pads need to provide high isolation. I suspect that the ear-pads are the important, but many people say [or at least think] that the headphone needs to be closed at the back.
@sennheiser
@sennheiser 28 дней назад
For best isolation you need earpads that seal really well. You can achieve some isolation (it is not nearly as much) with cloth/velour pads but that affects coupling which affects tuning. Closing the back is 100% critical to a sealed headphone's tuning and isolation characteristics. The entire system from pad-face to back plays a massive role in the overall presentation.
@sennheiser
@sennheiser 26 дней назад
The important part is the closed front volume, which is defined by the earpads, the baffle and of course your head. As an analogy, if you want to achieve high amplitude at 20 Hz with a completely open front volume (free field acoustics), you literally need a subwoofer. This is because amplitude depends on the driver's acceleration in a free field, which decreases sharply below the driver's resonance frequency, which is generally quite high for smaller diaphragms. By closing down the volume in front of the driver, amplitude depends on the driver's excursion. In those pressure chamber acoustics, excursion and amplitude remain constant below the transducer's resonance frequency. This is the reason why IEMs can still have good bass performance even with very small transducers. Kind regards, Jermo

I saw in a review that these are better then the hd820’s how is that possible? I paid over $2000 for them. For these to be better at $349
@timwilliams2881
@timwilliams2881 26 дней назад
Better by what measure? Isolation? Harman compliance? No doubt the HD820S will have the technical edge, even if it would benefit from some EQ. Most reviews are pretty subjective, it can depend on factors like the music the reviewer is listening to. One popular reviewer prefers a gaming headset to the 620S, but his playlist has only (heavily compressed) pop music. He'd probably hate the HD800S, the best dynamic headphone ever made IMHO (I like classical and jazz).
@DuranInternational
@DuranInternational 26 дней назад
@@timwilliams2881 thanks I like your perspective!
@sennheiser
@sennheiser 26 дней назад
The HD 820 certainly has the edge from a technical perspective: the best soundstage in closed back headphones, and much lower weight/surface of the transducer, which will translate to better detail retrieval. That being said, this performance is afforded with the huge dimensions, which don't make it the most portable headphones. So in terms of versatility, the HD 620S may be a better choice for people who like to carry the headphones around and utilize the higher isolation.
