Little known fact. Although impressive display of precision, these guys are not real Marines. They were actually cadets at Texas A&M which has the best collegiate drill team in the nation. The Marine drill team uses M1 Garand. These cadets use 1903 Springfield. If you look closely at the bayonet, there is the Texas AM logo.
Hoof you're right...The Texas A&M Fish Drill Team did play the Marines in this clip. I've had arguments over the years about this lol...good call man 👍🏻💯👊🏻🇺🇲
@@ProfessorKenneth I read these were all graduated ex-Aggies they brought back for the show. If true then they might not be quite as sharp as the current Fish Team
@@donarthiazi2443 The Fish Drill team is freshman only. The ones in the movie hadn't graduated; they were sophomores through seniors, some of whom were training that year's team while also getting ready for the filming of the movie.
One of the most (if not THE most) brilliant opening scenes of a movie, that I have ever seen. I have so much respect for the American Marines. It's great to know that they always have our backs.
The silent drill platoon is played be the Fighting Texas Aggie Fish Drill Team who were hired by the film makers when the real Silent Drill Platoon was unavailable
And still one of, if not the, best films that Cruise, Nicholson, Bacon, Moore and director Reiner ever made. That in itself is a phenomenal achievement.
Man, you got to have a heart of steel to do what colonel tells you regardless if it's wrong or not. Poor guy just didn't have the physique nor the stamina to keep up with his fellow soldiers and you're gonna kill him for it? I hope guys like him don't actually get bullied/killed in real life marine/army/navy/etc. If you're in the service, that's proper respect enough There are all kinds of military jobs they can do if not for field combat.
@@howardbaxter2514 Can tell you all don't $hit about military drilling. My pops who was a United States Army drill sergeant spotted for me plenty of flaws with their drilling with his "eye precision." But then again, he would know that and you and I as civilians would not.
Lol my guy I got to my unit in 2012 it was an infantry unit and I’ll tell you what... being taped up is nothing compared to what actually goes down in the barracks sometimes
I said no to military for number of reasons. One was, my neighbor's friend is always away doing his military thing. He got divorced. Most tragically family court devorced his life. Details asaid, house and money and child custody problems. Family court didn't care much about his dedication to serve country. He is dead now. I know the pain when child visitations are sabotaged.
That is not the military's fault. His wife could not understand the higher calling he answered to protect and serve his country and valued her own happiness over delayed gratification. The sheer ungratefulness baffles me. Semper Fi.
Interesting the cut that was played in Australia followed the original script. The line "you're lucky it's us Willy" was cut from this scene in this version.
Helen: more than you’ll ever know….be dammed glad we have a marine corps! (If we don’t fight ‘em over there; we will fight ‘em over here”!)…….yes, I’m certain that I’ve read that somewhere once!
Actually, this is one of the very few parts that I like in the whole movie. The mere fact of precision drilling is beyond my comprehension that must take hundreds of hours to perfect.
@@mojojoji5493 I think it's because of a transition to the next sequence of the set. The transition is still smooth but it would've been better if it hit is shoulder
Don’t want to burst any bubbles here, but it was actually The Texas A & M Fish Drill Team that performed the Marines’ silent opening. Not sure why - could be a military cooperation thing? Regardless, it was impressive as hell!
Santiago was one of those who would be seen in a study group, does little to no work effort and still gets credit for what his classmates did. And then gets jumped after school. But this is the Marine equivalent to that scenario.
I never understood why the whole movie was about disciplining a marine and following orders to do so since closing all his airways is a clear murder attempt. He was left to die from asphyxiation so what kind of disciplinary procedure was that? Even if they followed orders to kill this person these soldiers should still face imprisonment for manslaughter cause their clear intention was to kill the marine!
On the record Col.Jessup discourages code reds but off record condones it if it means turning boys to men and men into strong willed Marines. That's why he ordered the code red but had no intent on Santiago to die in the process.
I know right. Pretty sure twirling a rifle is not a move that will come in handy in any battle situation. It’s just a parade gimmick. Are they soldiers or circus actors?
I literally only came across this video after typing in Cinemasins Pirates Of The Caribbean because Jermey made one sin where he schooled the British for not being as good as the soldiers in the opening of a few good men
My only complaint in this scene is the clearly fake instruments, you can see a French Horn player clearly not even touching the keys, others are not even trying to act like their playing. I know it's a minor thing but still.
@Trøüt About that scene, yes, the rest of the movie isn't really a military movie to me, it's a legal movie, and not being a lawyer, I just ignored all the crap other lawyers are complaining about.
In my group of buddies, 6 signed up as marines and went on their way as soldiers. Next thing after the afghan iraq war, they died. Not one came back. One of them didn't even have his body brought back due to it being mangled and beheaded by a mob.
4:17, just noticed thaf one of the men seemed to be lower ranked (looking at his patch on his shoulder) I though in these "presentations" (sorry, don't know the name of these) everyone had the same rank? Why the random lower-ranked man?
