Been hearing that noise since i was a kid when on holiday in Ireland, EMD 645 Prime mover similar engine noise fitted into CIE metro vicks class 001 locos built in Manchester in the late 50s. In the late 60s early 70s they replaced the unreliable crossley engines with GM EMD lumps, these were still going in the mid nineties!
I heard the 66 Class sound like the Irish Rail 201 Class locomotives. I did a bit of research and I found out both locomotives have the same engine. The Irish Rail 201 Class were built for both freight and passenger trains and they look lovely, especially in their original livery. But the sound of the Irish Rail 071 Class locomotives is marvellous.
@@railjames The 710 was used on all EMD diesels up until a few years ago. Now they're only built for locomotives being exported, mainly to Canada. Otherwise, new domestic diesels can't be built with the 710 anymore because EPA Tier 4 regulations make it illegal (though I doubt that'll last long if Trump gets his way). New domestic diesels are now built with the new 1010 engine.
60 series is just the start of 710's career, then all the way to 90series, the last one is Tier3 emission SD70ACe. EMD: SD60,GP60,SD70(except SD70ACe-T4),SD75,SD80,SD90(except SD90MAC-H),GP33ECO(rebuild from GP50),SD32ECO(rebuild from SD60 and BNSF's SD45),SD59MX(rebuild from Union Pacific's SD60), MPI: MP40 . And not only locomotives, 710 engine can also be found on generator sets, boats or ships. If no dam Tier4, 710 would still being built in USA.
The EMD Class 66 is said to have 3,300 Horsepower maximum. it is also said to have around 3,000 Horsepower. The Class 66 has a 12 cylinder engine. and sounds awesome.
