"I think we are watching the arrival of Ayrton Senna as a truly outstanding talent", "He's not about to be World Champion this year, he will undoubtedly be World Champion in the future if his career continues".
Flame Resistant Troll the world is a different place today with social media. Everything is overexposed and over exaggerated. One “mistake” and you’re blacklisted from everything.
@Stev Rex So you knew Senna personally? He may have sometimes been a prick on the track but from all I have seen and heard about him from the people that knew him he was a very genuine and decent person. You seem to be the one who is a prick and has an axe to grind.
@David Miatke ......idiot and you know fa ! you're just trying to look a big man behind the keyboard....... met plenty of dicks in my time and they all sound the same big man
You forget Manfred Winklehock killed the following year in a sports car race. Also Michele Alboreto was killed doing sports car in 2001.That's makes 5 of the 20 starters of this race were killed motor racing. That's a shocking statistic.
Flame Resistant Troll no - if you're talking about Michael schmacher then then his best year was 2004 when he set many lap records and won the world championship. Wierdly enough a skiing accident disabled him and idk if he still alive atm
Remember that Bellof was disqualified in a lot of the races of that season because he was using an underweight car. Of course, there was no doubt that he was fast; he set the still standing world record at the Nordscheliefe.
Why is it so hard to find full races from the 80's & 90's?? It's the commentary of Walker & Hunt is the noise I seek, along with the gents calling the race.
I remember watching this grand prix live from television in Australia 10:30 in the evening. It is the most controversial race in my lifetime as it took the world championship from Alain Prost when went to Niki Lauda. Ayrton Senna was at the start of his race career.
+Luchingador Well, Monaco is by far the slowest circuit on the calendar so weather has less effect here. Like Hunt mentions, aquaplaning would likely not happen since they aren't driving that fast. Still, no power steering or any other aids. Very impressive indeed.
still, these drivers are always pushing their cars around the curves as hard as they can, and a wet surface makes that breaking point harder to find before it's too late, even with rain treads.
Tell that to Nigel Mansell! He actually led that Monaco GP for about a third of a lap, and then spun off. His excuse? 'Hit a white line'!!! (True story).
Agreed. I saw the '72 Monaco. Beltoise's performance was brilliant. Everyone put it down to clear vision until the lappery started - but he still got through. The most brilliant 'one off' I can every remember.
Thanks!! I love watching this video with the orig commentating. I really enjoy listening to James' thoughts on races. "the arrival of Ayrton Senna" couldn't have called it any better.
James Hunt was a great F1 commentator....knew exactly what was going on and what and who was special.....perfect match for Murray Walker who was loved for his enthusiasm...but actually didn't have a clue.......
Incredible if it were true, Senna did gain about 3 seconds one lap and Prost had a problem with his brakes which had caused Lauda to go off, Prost was controlling it rather well
@@barrierodliffe4155 Lololololololololololol. Prost was controling it rather well. Deary, deary me what ever happened to Prost's imaginary engine misfire fannyboy? By the way Lauda admitted that it was his error that cause his retirement from this race and not brake problems. But then who is Lauda compare to Mr. Omnipotent rodcliffe.
So if 3 seconds per lap was incredible, then what was Bellof's rating who was catching Senna faster than Senna was catching Prost then? Prost couldn't get heat into his carbon fiber brakes, that's why he was slow, Bellof had a normally aspirated car which is much easier to drive in the rain than the turbos. There is no secret ingredient, there is no magic, there are always simple facts that explain situations that fanboys have no interest in determining. Sure Senna was a quick driver, but a superhuman god he was not.
PS: In the McLaren's when Prost and Senna were team-mates, Prost set twice as many fastest laps during the races than Senna did. People can keep pretending that Senna was faster than Prost because he qualified ahead of Prost more often, but the fact is that being faster in the race was more important in those days. Qualifying is more critical these days of course because they can't pass now.
Fun Fact: If the race hadn't been stopped and Senna would have actually won, 2nd place would have been enough for Prost to win the world championship. Prost lost the championship by half a point because this "win" only got him 4,5 points due to the shortened race distance. 2nd place over the whole distance would have earned him 6 points and would have made him world champion by one point at the end of the year.
Different times to be honest. It was quite normal to keep showing the leader of the race. I have seen many a race where in my head the fight for 5th was way more exciting but i never saw a glimpse of it.
mcstyle24 Yeah, erm so why was Senna the only driver to gain on him. Get your facts straight Sennas laptimes was amazing seen to the conditions of the race. Just would like to say "Senna did that to" and his ability just was higher. Do you even know what the sport is about. Senna dwarfed Prost and all the other drivers of his generation. Ron Dennis said so quite openly and Prost was hes main driver for a long time (5 years).
Fredrik Bengtsson Oh get a grip. I know what this racing sport about. Been watching 15 years now. No need to tell how capable senna driving is. It is clear Prost slow down for safety reasons. Smart move from Prost. Senna and Prost incredibly good drivers. No need to hear from you ranting about it.
never can be replaced a one off he came along in a golden age of great drivers and races modern grand prixs are a sad shadow off what they once where...................
It has developed out of all proportion. What a big fuss about nothing. Senna passed a stationary Prost who had stopped on the red flag and then Senna went on a "victory lap". What a wally.
Senna was very sad and angry after that race, he said shortly after leaving the car in the interview were: Formula 1 is politics because there is a lot of money involved.
Senna was ridiculously arrogant driving around a "victory lap" waving to everyone, when CLEARLY Prost stopped exactly on the finish line right in front of race marshalls. What should Prost have done, run them over? Senna really made a fool out of himself.
@@joevenuti1201 You do know the whole of the car has to cross the finishing line?? ' What should Prost have done, run them over? There was acres of space to Prost's left. He turned into the marshalls. ' Senna was ridiculously arrogant..' Are all drivers celebrating victories or perceived victories especially maiden victories 'ridiculously arrogant' or just Senna.
Senna had a victim complex, he always thought FIA was taking wins from him, while also beliving he had God given right to win. That's why I always hated him.
Ah yes, the moment at which Alain Prost with his crystal ball saw into a future where everyone acclaimed Senna as the best racing driver of all time, and hated what he saw. He then forgot that Niki Lauda was the man he was competing against, and conspired with an all-French panel of mustachio-twirling FIA gangsters to cancel the race so a new racer named Ayrton Senna wouldn't win the race. Alain Prost, after all, is well known for caring less about championship points than satisfying his ego by winning every race. That's how it happened.
@@barrierodliffe4155 "Faster than Senna" Numbers, please? Senna scored the best avg speed, the best laps, was faster than anyone on track and still there's a tale that 'Bellof was catching' Senna, whereas I never found a single evidence/prove of it. (Otherwise, I saw Senna disappearing in front of Bellof). So if you please could make it available, time laps, how much difference per lap Bellof was reducing (numbers), something that show us that Bellof was going to surpass Senna (more: if even Mansell with that beast FW14B [on fresh tyres] was not able to pass Senna in Monaco...) PS: Interestingly, Arnoux was known for being a tough guy about overtakes - and Senna passed him in 1 lap, while Bellof took 6 laps to pass Arnoux. Afterwards Senna still passed the champ LAUDA in his McLaren (brilliantly before the St. Devote) - while Bellof didn't have to, because Lauda spun off. 1st lap: Senna P9 / Bellof P10. (Bellof right behind Senna by the end of the 1st lap). 3rd lap: Senna P8 / Bellof P10. 7th lap: Senna P7 / Bellof P9. 9th lap: Senna P6 / Bellof P8. 12th lap: Senna P5 / Bellof P8. 14th lap: Senna P4 / Bellof P8. (Senna took 1 lap to pass Arnoux) => P4 vs P8 on lap 14! 16th lap: Senna P3 / Bellof P6. 19th lap: Senna P2 / Bellof P6. (Senna passed Lauda / Bellof did not have to (Lauda spun off). 27th lap: Bellof P3 - finally passed Arnoux (Bellof took 6 laps to pass him). Senna Best Lap: 1'54"334 (Best Lap of the Race) Bellof Best Lap : 1'54"978 Senna, the only driver with avg speed over 104,2 km/h (Bellof: 103,7 km/h) Swallow your envy, crying is free.
@@keithrichards4296 When Senna was 11 seconds behind Prost and Bellof was catching up, that was the last lap. Not the first or second laps. Maybe you should look at how Senna was not even close to Prost when the race was stopped. Prost stopped for the red flag and Senna ignored the red flag. If you looked you should be able to find out that after Senna set his fastest lap he slowed down because of damaged suspension. Senna said he could see one of the from wheels moving about more than it should and his team said it would not have lasted much longer. It really is funny how Senna fanboys make so much out of a very lucky second place for Senna. You mentioned that it was hard to overtake at Monaco, If Senna hadn't damaged his suspension would he have even caught up to Prost? I am quite sure Prost would have responded and not just let Senna go past. Lauda was having brake problems, as was Prost but Prost was managing it better. Cry away all you like.
Bellof was indeed fast as his teammates in Sports Cars recall him but he lack discipline, as Derek Bell said in 1983 at the Nurburgring 1,000km Endurance race they we're told not to push so hard and try to only set slow laps Bell crossed the line in 6:42.000 while Bellof was doing less than 6:30.000s lap after lap and moments later Bellof crashed and was eliminated at the lead.
Thank you so much for this upload, it's utterly fabulous to watch it in HD "Senna passed Prost's slowing McLaren at the finish line, but according to the rules, the positions counted are those from the last lap completed by every driver - lap 31 , at which point Prost was still leading... continued...
Ayrton Senna, greatest natural talent & competitor, only Jim Clark can ever compare or surpass him...but Alain Prost, truly smooth, consistent, intelligent, savy, calculated & very aware of the political aspect too.
