nipaipo36100 well, guess that’s how the judging system at the time was set up. I didn’t get it either. They give lower marks for ppl who skate early in order to leave room for other skaters to decide to put them ahead or below.

Totally. Even though it was clear that there was always some respect for her among skaters and critics, she DID often take it on the chin from judges I can remember that. Never mattered to me--I always loved watching how entertain she was in EVERY performance, year after year. Skating misses this today regardless of how much more technical it has become. I think a few years back, Zagitova became my all time fav', but I always look back on how Butyrskaya fueled my interest in the sport. ~JSV

@@jsv438 Wow! That sounds like something I would say. Maria was also the reason that I became a fan of female figure skating. And Alina has also become one of my two all-time favorites. Maria is my other favorite. I know that, technically speaking, Alina's skills are on another level. She is amazing! However, for pure artistry Maria was magnificent. Watching some of her performances still give me goosebumps, as I fall in love with her again. Happy New Year!

​@@glennd5574 Totally huh. It's great that people still can enjoy some of the timeless performances from her. Younger fans can see what fueled our interest when Butyrskaya was turning heads on the ice AND showing that great skaters can still compete with even younger skaters coming into the sport. Speaking of Zagitova and her explosive success, which unfortunately didn't last nearly long enough (hope she's returning?), the new one I think is essentially her "replacement" is Kamila Valieva (Russia). If she keeps her focus in the Olympics there's no skater that can beat her. I felt _that same way_ the season before the last Olympics when Zagitova blew everyone away. It's so hard to believe these top world-class skaters can be so young. If Nathan Chen does well in the short, this Olympics, HE will be a gold winner too I believe. My fav' discipline though is ice dancing, but there's a few of these solo skaters that have to be watched now because the sport is really going to the next level. When you can see all these women's skaters nailing the triple axel (finally) you know something's changed. Thanks again for the clip! Nice talk! ⛸ ~JSV

Here's the thing though. She was the FIRST to skate. Her marks would have been way higher if it was later in the competition. She ended up 3rd after the short, so the marks stood "the test of time" after all of the other skaters. P.S. I am a huge Maria fan and was rooting for in every competition she entered.

Позор вам, что не знаете историю тех соревнований. Это короткая программа, которую Мария откатала хорошо и заняла 3 место, а произвольную программу она сорвала и стала 4-ой!

@@user-yr7fp9is3t а не надо меня позорить. А я не считаю, что она откатала короткую хуже Кван или Липински. И произвольную она не срывала, там были небольшие ошибочки на прыжках и была спорная ситуация с китайской фигуристкой Чень Лу.

Надо было тренироваться, заниматься спортом с 5 лет, жить отдельно от родителей с 12 лет, ломать руки, ноги, тренируясь, превозмогая себя, проявить сверх усилие, стать чемпионом мира, Европы, Олимпийским чемпионом, и тоже получить миллионы.

I disagree. I think her costume was fine. The fact that Maria is a mature, beautiful, woman doesn't mean that she should be held to a different standard in her attire. Most of her competitors' attire was no less revealing, and not all of them were under 16.

The costume was perfect for her. And aside from that poor excuse for a spiral sequence, this was a brilliant performance.
