I tested out like 10 3d tv's today (Dec 2, 2015) at tv warehouse and the active ones are a much better experience more immersive and pristine image quality than the passive. If you want the best experience go with active 3d panels of 120hz or higher.
I was big on active 3d but when I tried passive 3d in curry's I was amazed by how the 3d really popped out of the TV. Just wish LG made the TV look as cool as the Samsungs.

It may be a lesser resolution apparently, but our new LG Cinema 3D TV makes everything look so real! I don't see it as low quality at all! And I never get eye strain unlike the crappy active ones that give you head aches, and can screw up your depth perception if you watch it for too long :(
I'm sceptical about that. But the thing is, passive 3d never had to improve as much as active. All it has ever taken for passive 3d to look just fine is to choose the right screen size for a given distance to the screen. That correct screen size would allow you to juuust make out individual lines of pixels with a test pattern that has one white line follow a black line, then another black line after the white line and so on.
I've got the LG D2342P monitor. I like it. Glad I bought it. I don't agree that you loose half the image. Its more like between 720p and 1080p. I play Skyrim and watch 3d movies & RU-vid clips. And I have the go pro 3d camera setup making my own 3D videos. My only annoyance is the up/down viewing angle, mostly when showing other people because my chairs are different heights.
With that logic Active has full resolution to each eye and your brain puts it together to give you full 2160p. And I have a Panasonic 50" Plasma Active 3DTV which has great viewing angles.
I have to agree, I use to be an ACTIVE 3D fanboy, untill I checked out the 2012 LMXXXX LG PASSIVE 3D and I must say, I will be getting the LG LMXXXX, because it looked sooo crisp and bright and there was no HD RES downgrade at all. I was going to get the SAMSUNG ES8000, but I also tried it's ACTIVE 3D and compared it with the LG, and I must say, the LG blew it away, also the LG uses an IPS panel, while the samsung does not, I will definitly be ordering the LG in 2 week.
The LG is good for gaming and definitely viable for watching 3D movies. We have since bought Avengers, Tron, Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter,Hugo and a few other 3D blu rays....all have looked quality on the LG, just make sure you have the viewing space required to watch 3D - 2 meters. My Dad hated 3D but visits me and my fiancee just so he can wath a movie on my tv
Passive has half resolution to each eye and ya brain puts it together to give you full 1080p. From what I read, if passive really is half the res? You wouldn't get sharp clear text on screen (which you do) infact you get a sharper picture on passive. You have no flicker, larger viewing angles more comfortable and fraction of the cost. I've noticed you get a much convincing 3d effect with passive.
Depends on the Hz the tv has for active. I have the playstation display with 1080P and 240Hz. It's pretty smooth picture quality and sharpness. I only got it cuz u can have two players with different screens on one display but the 3D and 2D is well done. See it to believe it.
This is a delicate "Issue & I am not ready to make a descision of 3D Active Technology and 3D Passive Technology". I use "Active Shutter Technology from SONY and have also seen Passive Technology on LG HDTVs 3D". Passive Glasses gave me a clear Super 3D Dimensional Image but it appeared more like 720p Images at 60Hertz/sec. My Active 3D Glasses shows images at Full resolotion of 1080p content!
What gets me is how many people have convinced themselves their brain is "seeing full HD" just because LG paid an independent tester to pose for a photograph where they hand over a certificate claiming their 3D tech is full 1080p. Simply put, it isn't. Although I say go with your preference, as there is NOT a winner or loser here... unlike the format wars. Blu-ray 3D and games, and 3D broadcast services work with both passive and active sets... so how can the consumer back a loser? They can't.

while the passive 3d reduces the resolution to half . the stupid active 3d reduces the precieved refresh rate to half. so if the active 3d tv is rated as 60 Hz the precieved 3d image quality will be of 30 Hz refresh . thats why theres flicker . and more over active 3d glasses are expensive . and heavy and needs recharging . so i would recommend all to go for passive 3d(lg 3d tvs) . half the resolution does not cause any problem unless are very close to the TV.
@FlyingLaptop Yeah I hate active glasses. But the Resolution honestly doesn't look bad. I would not even think it's half resolution at all. It sure doesn't look like it. It looks just as if you watched it without glasses on. There is no difference in real quality that you see. Just because it says it's going to be half resolution on the screen, doesn't mean it's actually going to look bad.
But the Passive Glasses technologies have improved with brighter images and showing in 2012 HDTVs at almost 1080p Full Resolution but more like a 850 lines of resolution than 1080 lines. Active Shutter has also improved to brighten the images screen so that a 1080p 60Hertz image is brighter through the 3D Glasses on.I now, like both Technologies,Passive Glasses=Cheaper by 90%!
You should feel lucky as many of my friends/work colleagues have traded in their active sets for passive sets due to the fact of headache induced flickering, this is across SONY and Samsung sets. I personally prefer passive and cant watch active 3D TV's that and the darkened yellow tinged screen.
@XBlashyrkhX Are you using Kindergarten analogy? How can you see FULL HD when each eye can only see HALF of the Resolution? Each eye should be getting a FULL HD image for the brain to process a FULL HD image.. Unless ofcourse with the exception of Cross-Eyed people.

I am also gonna exchange my Samsung bought last friday tomorrow for an LG cinema because when I watched a 3d trailer for 4 minutes, my eyes and head started hurt and I got headache for the whole day. as well as my son. I am sure by now you already have an LG, what do you think about it?
Used both passive is the way forword, no eye strain, no gosting, you can lie down without losing 3d picture also you get a brighter picture and to be fair you may get 540 to each eye but you reley cant tell that you losing that much picture quality but active tv's i havent seen one were their are no gosting flickering and they have all give me eyestrain
I it possible to rub the film pattern retarder off of the screen? also is it possible for the FPR to peel off of the screen? how can you clean/wipe the screen without damaging the FPR?
If active is so superior why have Panasonic dropped it and moved to passive for all 2013 models ? and the first 4k sony 84" has passive 3d Not active ????????
I advise you to buy a TV with passive 3D...this technology has evolved significantly last 2 years...now, the resolution of the video is totally kept with the passive 3D glasses, and off course you'll not have troubles of nausea or headache with these glasses
If you poor buy smaller tv to make up for lower resolution in passive 3d....so you won't notice it. If you rich buy high end tv with high frame rate to reduce flicker pain of active 3d. Me thinking about Gaming PC Seamless monitor screens combine bigger screen, learn build Active 3D 8k 60-120 frames per second. CHEAPER THAN TV???
With Most people who are far enough away from their TVs. Will hardly even notice the difference. I think these videophile nutbags must siting 2 feet away from the TV. And RealD had a way to slove the 540 line thing. By making the tv the shutter. But most companies didn't want anything to do with it. Because their revenue stream of making people pay high prices for glasses would dry up pretty quick. Other than maybe Glasses-free 3D which i think is a ways off. Low Cost Passive sets is the only way the General Public (not insane videophiles) will embrace 3D. People don't mind the 3D glasses at the theaters. But nobody is going to want to use heavy expensive battery operated flicker Active 3D. Its because the idiotic Manufatures who produce mostly Active 3DTV. Instead of producing and improving Passive 3D. Also CD Players offer superior audio quality. But Mp3 Players are far more popular because their more convenient.
There's passive 3d samsung tv now without glasses. 85" 8k $15,000....3d sucks...you can see poor picture quality because the big screen reduces pixel density.
WHAT A LIE i have LG 32LM6200 and i have and AMD HD 6850 and i play DIRT 3, DEUX EX, GEARS OF WAR, CRYSIS 2 IN 3D and the games LOOKS awesome i am very happy.. And my friend has and GTX 580 and a sony with active glases and the games in 3d looks very dark, the only complain is that i cant reproduce 1920x1080 120hz 3D
BS... its not exactly half. The vertical res is half. The horizontal is full res. I've had both and prefer passive by a MILE. I have a cheap Vizio 3D passive TV and have noticed a LOT LESS ghosting (rarely see it) VS the two previous high-end Samsung active 3D plasma TVs I had. It depends on the viewing distance but if a reasonable distance from the screen the res loss has not been an issue at all for me. Decide for yourself, but active (in its current form) WILL go away. Be assured.
LG passive is way better than any other active. (only Philips have better active 3D but LG is the same almost.) Regarding the resolution: in Both active or passive you see full HD . in active it looks like that L=1080+R0=1080p. in Passive you get L540p+R540p=1080p. thats all.
1080p, 2160p, who gives a shit. My eyes tell me enough and passive has better 3d, looks nicer and most of all is easier on the eyes. Passive FTW, byebye Samsung! Welcome LG!
DO NOT GET ACTIVE...it's a dying breed because these comopanies realied it's not selling. Certain passive 3D TV like LG has an instand 2-D to 3-D conversion for any content. Vizio does not though. But side by side conversion is the best 3D which all passive HDTV has as a feature.
