The irony is that nearly everyone is a “Dame” in Britain nowadays. Sutherland had earned that title long before it was belatedly bestowed. As for me, I saw her onstage beginning in 1973 mostly at the Met, but also in Brooklyn and Buffalo, of all places! I’ve heard many great voices, but there was nothing comparable with the size and resourcefulness of that voice.
Joan seemed like a genuinely nice & unassuming woman, the kind you'd love to be your neighbor. On a different note 🤪, I kinda love seeing all the vintage TV commercials. They're like time capsules; we never go back to their particular styles after we've moved on to the next one it seems.
