Excellent video. I have a 1990 HDJ81 and love driving it and wrenching on it.

wow!! sick build. Love how you kept it simple and light. That's exactly the route I took when building my 1997 Collector's Edition. It's an overlanding vehicle that I can live out of very comfortably and I am not into buying (let's be real...showing off) all the latest things.

Great Video! Do you have a build list for your HDJ81? I am interested in a lot of things you mentioned in your overview. Also, what was that seat name you bought? Thanks.

So why did Matt sell it and did he go to anything else?

He has a few other nice overland vehicles, so this one was redundant.

Sorry Matt, but I have to call you out on the obligatory fan boy "legendary durability" quote. You have only installed/replaced about $40,000 worth of aftermarket/non-Toyota parts, on what I'm guessing is not a million mile example of an 80. Are you being paid to perpetuate a false legend, or are you just planing to link this to the Craigs list ad?

Age related repairs are not a reflection of durability. Reliability, possibly, but the durability of the 80 series platform has long surpassed most reasonable consideration. Matt was not paid to share his experience with his personal vehicle, and the truck sold well before this video was published. Hope that helps shed some light. Thanks for watching.

@@ExpeditionPortal easy Scott, I'm just giving him a ribbing. One that he deserves. I do believe by definition, "durability" IS the length of time or distance something lasts before failure or replacement. Reliability is just how regularly it fails to meet the customers expectations of doing it's duties. Like JD Power's reliability index tracks things like how often your phone didn't pair with the head unit, or how often it was brought to the dealership because the customer couldn't figure out how to close the dual moon roof. You can't have that failure if you don't have that option. That is considered a break down, or reliability issue now-a-days. The 80 series was never as durable as a Tundra, or any other modern half ton or HD truck for that matter. There is no fairy dust on the cam journals, or unicorn horn in the diff oil. It was likely more reliable, because it had less features to brake, less reasons to go to the dealership, or less availability to find a dealership in some countries. They certainly were driven easier then most half tons because they are so expensive and NGO's had peoples lives at stake. Also repairs are not only expensive, they can take longer in central Africa. It certainly was not towing a 20,000 lbs hay wagon on the farm, or hauling a 30 ft RV at 80 mph up hill, or had the 16 year old son tug-of-war with his buddy's fathers truck every second Saturday night like many half tons do. You can't be "Journalists" and be BS fluff fan boys too.

So you are suggesting that the 80 series Land Cruiser is less durable (or reliable) than comparable wagons of the same vintage? I do not believe Matt made any suggestion that a Tundra or HD truck was less durable. Matt is merely suggesting what the rest of the world has validated. In austere conditions, the Land Cruiser has become the vehicle of choice (with associated market penetration and sales volume) precisely because it is reliable and durable. Even without the suggestion of bias or the threat of fluffery, the cause of this market validation is easy to correlate. For example, comparing ring gear size to GVWR, or engine output (i.e. lower) per liter, reflecting understressed drivelines. A deep dive into FEA, TMS, and duty ratings of Toyota alone will assuage your fears of fluffery, we promise. Sometimes enthusiastic endorsement is justified, when the chorus of agreement is loud enough. Thanks again for the feedback

@@ExpeditionPortal well I would suggest that the number of repairs done on that truck constitutes merely average reliability and durability. Michael's (Overland Bound) catastrophic engine failure at 180,000 miles is below average durability or reliability. The parts replaced by Shawn on 4WD 24-7. All the issues LLOD has had with his 80 does NOT suggest legendary durability. Just a bias, or a false legend. I don't know anyone who has owned one that was truly trouble free although all four of those examples would suggest their car is super reliable. As for most Toyota's being underpowered in an attempt to reduce failure, I believe that to be correct. I'm not anti-Toyota either. I worked for Toyota before as a mechanic, and we still have a Prius at home. I'm just anti BS. Thanks for the great, if sometimes childishly biased content. I hope you'll keep up the fantastic work you do, while trying to eliminate the prejudice. "Brand-ism" like mechanical racism needs to be removed from journalism and I believe your editorial position, condoning this behavior reduces the credibility of your platforms. Don't you think George Washington would have pushed for a higher standard?

So you are suggesting that the Land Cruiser 80 is less reliable or durable than wagons of the same vintage? I would merely submit that you are confusing enthusiasm and frequency (Toyotas are the most popular brand across all of vehicle-based overlanding) with bias. I would also submit that there is a key difference between durability (service life of the system) and reliability (component failure rate). Please excuse any delays in reply, as connectivity has been sporadic during my crossing of the Pacific.
