Stumbled upon. Good explanation - very clear. I notice they connect to RCA plugs. And I know most modern TVs, they'd connect to soundbar directly. But can I recycle an older style PC 5.1 (so bass and rear speakers for machine gun fire and helicopters!). Being PC speakers they would have the coloured plugs x 5.

Thanks for posting. Most 5.1 systems will also simulate 5.1 to give you a good surround sound effect from a stereo input.

Not sure why to do in my case. I have an older Sony TV with HDMI ins and optical….no ARC. I have a Yamaha soundbar with hdmi Earc and optical. When I had cable tv, I connected my soundbar to the cable box with optical and the cable box to tv with hdmi. The cable box passed the DD and DTS signals to sound bar. Everything worked fine. I dropped cable and got a ROKU stick that I connect to TV. I have optical from tv to soundbar. I do get sound, but no longer get DD or DTS. I guess the tv won’t pass these signals. Any ideas?

Thanks, Roger for the video. My issue is that I have a very old TV (German brand, Loewe) with two HDMI ports (neither of which are HDMI ARC) and no optical port either. I have just bought a soundbar which has an HDMI ARC port and Optical port. Is there a way of connecting a non-ARC TV to an ARC soundbar? The only thing I have found that works so far is to connect the old TV and soundbar with RCA cinch cable leads only. If I have understood correctly from your video, neither the HDMI audio extractor or the HDMI ARC adapter can help me in this situation (unless maybe I connect my cable box to the soundbar and cable box to TV via HDMI, like one of the reviewers, David Trachtenberg, mentions below)?

Roger - My new smart TV and old yamaha receiver are not close to each other and connect via HDMI run through the wall. Connecting the tv and receiver via the arc HDMI ARC adapter audio cable will not be an easy option. Will I be able to connect the HDMI arc adapter to the receiver (and not the TV) via the out port then connecting the audio cable to the tape input?
@rogergadgetguy
@rogergadgetguy 11 дней назад
I'm guessing you are asking because the old receiver has HDMI ports but no ARC. I'm also guessing that you used to send an HDMI signal from Cable or satellite box through the receiver to the TV but now you are using the apps on the TV connected via WiFi. This is a very common scenario, but what is not common is the routing of the HDMI cable through a wall. Sometimes the physical constraints of a system are far harder to deal with than the technical ones. Since you have a single HDMI cable running through the wall you could connect the ARC adapter to it and use the audio outputs connected to a tape input. The ARC adapter will not work connected to the receiver via HDMI it only works with that one ARC port on the TV.

Hi Roger, I purchased the ARC Audio Extractor for my new but very basic Samsung Tv in an attempt to play the sound through my old Sonos play 5 which has an audio jack input. The outcome is a sound delay. I have not found a solution. CEC and PCM are on. Any ideas please?
@rogergadgetguy
@rogergadgetguy 11 дней назад
The problem may be with the Sonos. In order to enable multi room capabilities the sound from the audio jack is digitized I do not know what the internal architecture of the Play 5 is but I'm guessing they put the signal through a processor to equalize the sound for that specific speaker. This is how they get a big sound from a small box. The sound then needs to be converted back to analog to play through the internal amps and speakers. If I'm guessing right about this the multiple processing steps may add up to an audible delay. To verify, try connecting something else like some wired headphones or a speaker amp or receiver to the arc adapter to see if the Sonos is the problem.
@Chazman-oi3uv
@Chazman-oi3uv 6 дней назад
Thank you Roger. I tried an alternative speaker to the Sonos and it worked very well with perfect lip sync. It seems that my idea to utilise the Sonos Play 5 is not going to work because of the reason you identified.

How do you control the volume? Through the fire tv or the sound bar?
@rogergadgetguy
@rogergadgetguy 11 дней назад
It depends on how you have hooked up the sound bar. If it is connected directly from the TV through optical you control the volume via the soundbar. If HDMI ARC is connected directly to the soundbar then the TV controls the volume. If you connect through and HDMI ARC adapter and connect the RCA audio outputs to the soundbar then the TV controls the volume. If you connect through an HDMI ARC adapter and you connect the adapter's optical output to the sound bar then the sound bar controls the volume.

Hi Justin. Most monitors don't have built in speakers so you will need external speakers which will also sound much better than any monitor speakers. If your monitor does have internal speakers a straight HDMI connection would work. For external speakers use the HDMI audio extractor (Not the HDMI-ARC adapter/extractor)

Roger, great video. If I use an ARC audio extractor and DAC converter to get audio from a Samsung TV to a receiver with RCA inputs, will the Samsung TV allow its TV speakers and the receiver speakers to play at the same time? I can do that now with my current Samsungs optical out (using a DAC) but I see the newer Samsungs did away with the optical out. I need to replace my TV as the picture is starting to go. Thanks!
@rogergadgetguy
@rogergadgetguy 2 месяца назад
I have yet to find a TV that allows ARC and the internal speakers to play at the same time. Getting rid of optical is a terrible decision by Samsung which will limit compatibility of their TV's. The sound of the internal speakers on the newest Samsung TVs is pretty bad though, so you might not miss them.

@rogergadgetguy
@rogergadgetguy 5 дней назад
Hi These two devices are not interchangeable. The HDA 912 is an HDMI audio extractor which will send the audio from its HDMI input to the optical output. Only the audio from the single HDMI source, that is the one connected directly to the adapter, will be sent to the receiver. The HDA 927 can send the audio from any source that is playing to a TV to a receiver whether or not that source is connected directly to the adapter.

Why wouldn’t a connector work if it is RCA on one end and HDMI on the other? I wish I could attach a picture of what I’m talking about. Thank you.
@rogergadgetguy
@rogergadgetguy 11 дней назад
Hi I think I can picture what you are talking about. iI would be nice since you wouldn't have to connect power to it. The reason why it doesn't exist ,is that the conversion from HDMI to RCA requires a conversion from a digital signal to an analog audio signal. All the adapters I mention contain a digital to analog converter often abbreviated to DAC. The circuitry in a DAC requires power and neither RCA Cables or HDMI cables can provide the power.

You know that saying " it does exactly what it says on the tin"? Well Inspector Gadget play back your own videos and listen to how many times you use another word i.e. HDMi converter becomes adaptor, HDMi ARC Adapter becomes an extractor. But, I also want to extract 2 channel along the way so that I can use whole-house audio on the same source. The device would need to pass through the HDMI (ARC) but ALSO extract 2 channel. Is there such a device? I'm stumped.

@rogergadgetguy
@rogergadgetguy Месяц назад
There are no adapters that I can find, that pass through the surround sound and simultaneously down mix to stereo, You could try using two different adapters in combo to do the job. One having ARC passthrough and a 5.1 optical output that you could conect to your surround sound. You could then take the ARC passthough and connect an adapter that downmixes it to Stereo. Both these types of adapter exist but I have not tested either so can't make a specific recommendation. If you find a method that works please post so that others can learn the solution. Thanks

@rogergadgetguy 2 месяца назад
It's easy to buy the wrong one many people do because it's confusing. The ARC vs eARC thing is confusing too. There is no adapter that converts ARC to eARC if an eARC device is connected to an ARC device it should automatically downgrade itself to ARC capability. Basically dolby Atmos will not work you will only get 5.1 surround sound or stereo.

@fecklessmovies 2 месяца назад
@@rogergadgetguy thanks. I wasn’t sure if it was backwards compatible from earc to arc but from what you say it should work. Anyway in the end I sent the ‘wrong’ one back and ordered the only one that specifically said eArc to audio converter and that has worked a treat. I’m using the RCA/phono outputs but it also has optical and hdmi out. I’m not sure the sellers always describe these things correctly but I get the impression ‘converter’ is what will change the audio but ‘extractor’ can cover various other uses. For anyone reading this who is as confused as I was, this is the exact item that worked “H.May eArc to RCA+SPDIF+HDMI Audio Converter,RCA 3.5mm Audio Adapter,24bit/192KHz Audio Sampling Rate,ARC Audio Return, HD 5.1 and HD 7.1 Channels,Supports eARC & ARC inputs”.

There may be an issue of audio not in sync with video especially if the audio system is quiet old or if you are using a audio dongle. If everything OK, audio quality with cable is much better than Bluetooth connection.
@rogergadgetguy

Great question, and I see two viewers have replied with good answers. I've actually measured bluetooth lip sync delays of over 120ms on some setups which is quite noticable. There are also many TV's that do not have bluetooth. Bluetooth can work well in some situations, but this video covers some of the issues (and solutions) with bluetooth and TV sound. it's targeted at headphones but applies to speakers too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tz6wSNouxlE.html
