💯 correct from Heather du Plessis-Allan. Sometimes you have to do stuff that makes some people uncomfortable. We need to establish equal rights in law through the Treaty Principles Bill.
If the PM sticks to these words,we are a democracy one person one vote and we are all treated equally and come under one law,we have got to make it clear that Māori have no more rights than any other person in NZ.thanks Heather.
Key was a wimp. He wasn't willing to tackle the issues - he just went the easy way and that never works long term. He is partly to blame for where we are now.
Well said Heather, this bizarre politics in New Zealand 🇳🇿 has to be put right. It's broken. Whatever good thing John key did was undone when he let sharples sneak off to the UN.
Great stuff Heather, Finally a journalist who states facts and is not afraid to be controversial instead of following in the footsteps of her woke peers who are fuelling the fire of the left and apartheid
Its John Key's policies that are largely responsible for what is happening now. All Mr Key needed to do was carry out his election promises. But that would have required a spine.
Totally correct. Unless this legislation is not removed from the statutes now the mess will get worse. Luxon will make matters much worse by just meddling. He will allow abusers a free ride and future change will be impossible.
Heather what you said is so accurate. That is a very logical statement & I hope the political parties & New Zealand in general take it on board as it’s getting toxic.
John Key needs to go back to Hawaii and let the adults deal with the very different and far more dangerous New Zealand that we are forced to deal with today.
The Government is on the right track John Key didn’t have the balls to do what needed to be done he cozied up to the Maori Party to stay in the drivers seat
So, only politicians, WT, activist judiciary and public service employees are allowed to discuss the future of our democracy? Have they all forgotten that they are essentially employees of the taxpayers of this country? Is democratic process not based on one equal vote for all persons of age a civil right? So much for honoring our fallen in two world wars, Malaya, Korea, Vietnam, and more recent conflicts. Frankly it's an appalling and very perilous pathway being proposed by someone who can literally fly away from trouble.
Key was always a centrist. His political climate couldn't be more different from today's. Chris needs to grow a pair and capitulate on this bill. Otherwise the country is no more.
It all comes back to co governance and the He Puapua report and its agenda. Everything that was put in place or in process that mentions TOW, the Principles, or partnership, is all in He Puapua. The problem is that this is a complete change in government structure with the full intention of Maori by 2030 having veto powers on all final decisions. ACT opposes this because they actually believe that this sort of structural change can only be done with the consent of the people and we have not consented. What ACT is trying to do is put the decision back into the hands of the citizens of NZ. The right thing to do, the adult thing to do, is have the conversation, have the debate, listen to all the information, sift out the crap, ignore the nasty, and vote. It will take more than this one bill to dismantle the divisive damage but I believe that if we listen carefully for those voices (not John Key) that show genuine integrity, courage, and respect to all of us as NZ citizens that we can find a path forward. My half Pakeha, half Maori family would really appreciate that.
In case you still think the Treaty Principles Bill is really about a “debate”, go and have a look at the fundamental commitments of Hobson’s Pledge - and, within About Us, third bullet point down, you’ll find the same principles ACT wants to lock in through the Treaty Principles Bill:
You have to be a bit careful about how you praise John Key and a few of the things that he did he borrowed money because the interest was cheap we had a rockstar economy because it was held up by debt he contributed majorly to the problem of debt that we have now so be careful who you give the accolades to
Co-governance is in the treaty. Brits replaced rangatiratanga (run by local chiefs) into sovereignty (run by UK royals). The treaty house was set on fire but the treaty document still exists showing the details along with its burnt frayed edges. We've tried the colonial system for a hell of a long time and now is the time to give the actual documented deal a fair go.
Go to far, stupid language. Enguage us all in honist stwiuedship , means more reserves and more farms. Not rights mascarading as some magical advancement because of ethicnisity. We see what science maths money and creativity can do, imagine multiplying that five fold.

The problem is that the things "have to be done" (I don't agree they do by the way) are being done without proper consultation and giving primacy to coalition agreements over constitutional arrangements (like Te Tiriti and Treaty obligations) with no proper debate. It is outrageous and no wonder TPM are upset - rightly so.
ACT'bill is to honour the treaty as it was written and signed in 1840. The TPM need to use that version of the treaty not the rogue James Freeman one that was made official in 1865 because no one could translate the maori text ??
@@kaz_don_fan No, the official English version is nothing like the tearty the maori chiefs signed. So it does matter. Not only that but, Maori activists are very good at changing the meaning of words over the centuries.
ACT & NZFIRST claim Maori are practicing apartheid but 'Heather' doesn't mention that and democratic process?? Maori wards on council is democratic but we don't hear 'Heather' mentioning the rural and urban wards just MAORI BASHING!! 😮
It’s not offensive what you fail to talk about also all the damage done by Pākehās in previous years too kids and their abuse in state care, how ironic some one of your callabor to speak in such tone when your last name said it all, look forward to more of your excellent journalism
Thank god for Heather & Mike Hosking the ONLY professional media people in New Zealand. Racist division needs to end One People One Vote no special privileges period. Maori are Not Indigenous & the lie needs to stop being perpetuated.
