Catch more coyote bobcat and fox. Predator trapping demo showing how to make a step down dirthole set. How I catch most almost all of my coon • ULTIMATE GUIDE to dog ...
I bet you’d feel differently if a coyote or bobcat came into your yard and ate your cat in front of you or killed a calf of yours. But thanks for watching
@@Grissom_Outdoors Another poorly thought out what-if scenario. I'm 74 and have hunted all of my life, since the age of eight, with a recurve. Your motivation is not in protecting natural prey from superior predators. People like you are too far removed from the natural world to ever achieve enlightenment. There are (x) number of predators in a given area because the prey population will support it. You, sir, are part of the problem.
My set is something similar, I do not do the step down however. I put sticks and straw parts of grass so there are sharp points sticking up because they are very certain of their paw placement when they are unsure of something. I get my first coyote and then all I use is the stomach from one and cut it into pieces. Turn it inside out. Put it back in the hole. The smell is primal. They are fed from throw up when they are pups. They ALWAYS step into the trap. Same process just not as much digging. He is spot on with this set. It will work every time. The only way it has not worked is when they slip the trap. I have had just toes left behind. They will never go to another set after that. They will live to be old.
@@willm4406 yes you can most likely not in city limits but if you get out of the city and get on public or private land with permission you can indeed hunt coyote and fox. And with dogs except for in certain counties. Always check the laws in your state. Good luck.
Well it’s a variation of the dirt hole the trench he dug makes it a step down dirthole. He says he gets more catches with this set bc it forces them into that trench.
Instead of the extra weight of a drill with an auger, it's much easier to just use a rebar stake driven in the ground. Wallow it around and it creates your bait hole. If you stake your traps, you're already carrying the bars so it's not extra weight.
Man thanks I really appreciate it if you haven’t already watched them I have a few other videos and I’ll gonna be posting once a week so stay tuned for that as well.
Great information and tutorial. Have had coyote coming right up to my camper..Too close to camp for me. I'll be giving this trap setup a try. Thanks 👍😎
@@Grissom_Outdoors I'll let you know... It's a Pack, haven't heard them in a while, not right around my place at least. But they are there, lurking in the dark. Along with a local Panther, Bobcats, Fox, and a few Black Bear have recently been spotted in our county. They pretty much keep their distance, but the coyotes are a major issue, especially for the local cattle farm's. Y'all have a Blessed Christmas 🙏 🪶 👆
I've considered traps but we like to keep foxes around to catch mice, also we have s ringtaail or two. My neighbor traps and we loose the foxes anyhow, part of Country living If people don't live remote they can't understand nature and how humans fit in. Big cities kill far more domestic and wildlife than a few Country guys raising animals and controlling predators
I'm down in SC and there's a pack of at least 30 back up behind my place. It'll sound like they're in my yard sometimes but they haven't gotten that brave yet. Unfortunately I've got the wrong fire power to deal with em
@@michellelovesanimals2237 well if that somehow happened it would be super easy to shoot those coyotes in the head with my pistol. Hey that’s a great idea I may have to try that
It’s is but what he says about it makes a lot of sense to me. How often does the wind blow one way all the time? He also says he puts a set on each side of the road so it doesn’t matter too much anyway.
@@Grissom_Outdoors Dont get me wrong , it's a good set and has its place , but there are several reasons why it will miss more than it catches. #1 being that it relies on bait and that a predator needs to be looking for food and commit to it to be caught. If his belly is full , he most often isn't interested in it. That's why blind sets will catch more than baited sets. This set in the video will catch more fox and bobcats than coyotes because of trap placement. Bobcats and fox are hole huggers and fox are more aggressive at a set than coyotes. The trouble with Bobcats is that most often his curiosity is satisfied the first time and if he doesnt get caught , then its pretty much overwith for him and that set. No pan cover and no guides will also result in misses. A varmint can step on the jaw and toes can set off the pan , but the jaw can throw the foot out. Guiding the foot will reduce it. For every coyote caught at a set , there is in all probability 10 or more walking right on by totally ignoring it. Those that do investigate , but don't commit , stand out beyond the pattern , sniff around , then move on. A big hole and bigger bait will catch more over a small hole and small bait because if a predator like a coyote that might be feeding , may pass on by because he's going 2 miles away to eat steak off a cow carcass. His mind is elsewhere. The biggest problem with dirt holes is rain filling them full of water. . Down here in the South where it might rain every other day , they'd be out of business.
@@Grissom_Outdoors Call any time. I used to try to avoid coyotes to catch cats as the cats brought the money and a lot easier to handle. Might be able to help you out with cats. We caught 111 cats in 6 weeks in 1983-84, no bait, no lure. Trapped them for 8 years in California, footholds. Cages do work well also. One California trapper got 130 cats in cages one year. You could use double door cages in trails or with bait or single door traps as cubbies too. Colorado is using some of our double door bobcat traps for cats in a study. The Canadians are using them for a Lynx program.
@@Grissom_Outdoorsto catch a catn you must find a cat. Setting "on sign" for cats, kuch like pine parten or fisher truly is paramount to putting fur on a board. Find an area with cats, then find areas within that area that cats use. Toilet areas, brushlines, logging roads etc. From there place flagging above the set, and clear a well worn trail to your set and past it. Bed a trap on the apraoch trail and your "final curiosity" lure(feathers, hair, etc) about 18-24" past where your trap is bedded. Youll miss some fox and coyote on this set but for cats its hard to beat. You can REALLY unnaturally guide a cat. Use brush or thorns, not logs as theyd rather walk atop larger blocking like wrist sized wood or larger. Its quieter so theyll take the stealtjiest way you give them
It is work all right. Not sure about those garden store rubber gloves though. They stink & it wouldn't take much of a canine nose to realize " something is fishy"& stay away from the set...maybe time needs to go by to naturalize the surroundings
Disappointed the set wasn't complete with out staking and covering. Some of the most important parts. Plus soil thrown to side... No sent protection tarp for boots and jeans scent contamination.
He didn’t stake it bc he was doing a demo and he had limited time. He doesn’t use a tarp or anything he’s not super concerned with scent contamination but he does change gloves when he stops bedding the trap and starts baiting he says if you don’t you’ll have issues. Thanks for watching!!
@@MultiCal strange as it sounds even to myself you can be both. Honestly I know it sounds strange but the animals I types of animals I hunt are the ones I admire the most.
@@MultiCal I can definitely understand where it seems strange and it even sounds strange to me but thanks for not being hostile and respecting someone point of view. Me and 90 percent of hunters and trappers genuinely do love these animals. Thanks for watching!!
@@johnwoofter5744 there’s never any vet bills to pay bc the animals are completely fine lol I do tell there owners though and mostly they say well dang they shouldn’t have been over that way anyway.
@@Grissom_Outdoors I'm sure it's extremely difficult and I really don't know jack about it. I also respect outdoorsmen, wish I could spend time in the wild, it's always been a dream of mine. What I was reacting to was the "killing 100s of coyotes" part...seems like a waste.
@@josefcosta8267 no sir where he is trapping is Texas where they have feed lots and ranches with lots of exotic animals and deer and the ranchers want them gone he’s just doing a good job
He didn’t do that bc he was doing a demo with limited Time if you’d like I will do a video showing How to anchor them and everything. As for stepping in it I have a video of me putting my hand in one. Go check that out
They get let go if they aren’t something I intended to catch. But you can use pan tension which is the weight required to set the trap off to eliminate some of the non target catches.
Yes I’m apologize about that we were outside and I was filming with my phone and the wind was blowing. Im looking into getting a mic and using my dslr camera

@@michellelovesanimals2237 yes exactly don’t you know all we think about is killing things!! Thanks for the comments they help boost my videos in the algorithm
He is right this is a killer set guaranteed to catch my hounds and my sheep dogs ...got a trapper sets traps right up to my sheep pen fence and catches my great Pyrenees...or I guess I can say he used to do it
@@Grissom_Outdoors sure was off my property and he was trespassing on my brothers ....but that can't be proven when the scuzz ball didn't put his name on the trap.....but that all got settled....he don't trap around here any more
Most people are just assholes, they set a trap and when it catches the wrong animal, the assholes post a video releasing the animals. When it's the right animal (wolves and coyotes, for example), the assholes kill them, but they don't post that part of the murder on the internet.
A lot of people are trying to make this a full time job or it is their full time job and if they show the part where the animal is shot a bunch of snowflakes cry about it and the video gets taken down and they get flagged making no more money.
@@Grissom_Outdoors I would like to apologize for being so aggressive and also to use your channel for this. I also apologize to anyone and everyone who was offended by my words. In fact, being aggressive only takes the hatred further, failing to talk and try to resolve the situation with respect and love. "Love one another". Again, sorry!
I’ll be honest man this was the first video I ever recorded for RU-vid and I had no clue what I was doing and even further no clue it would get this type of traffic. That said I do have some better film quality now check out the rest of the channel.
Or don’t let them eat all the food that’s around kill fawns turkeys destroy turkey nests eat all the quail and rabbits and then when you see a coyote that’s starved almost to death don’t shoot it bc that’s what you wanted. Or when it’s got mange in the middle of winter and is freezing to death be proud of yourself for not disrupting anything. Better yet let it eat your cat calf or small dog.
Like your small cat or dog does anything but feed your ego. I have watched ranchers annihilate wildlife for thirty years. Leave your city habits in the city. All of it. Imo
I was a professional trapper back in the 80's and 90's. Have caught more fox than coyotes. Learned the school of Hard Knocks way but I was one if the better canine trappers in northern illinois
