Ghanaian firm, Kasa Konsultants uses rammed earth to build affordable homes in Ghana. In this video, we talk with the daring Peace Obeng Appau, director of Kasa Konsultants
about building with rammed earth in Ghana: the
product, process and everything in between.
We learn how we can use rammed earth as an alternative construction material for our homes.
Kasa Konsultants have been building for 6 years but switched to solely building with rammed earth in 2019 because of the affordability, sustainability, cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness.
We showcase some of their projects; 5 of which are solo projects and 3 others that were built with external partners.

We were only able to provide external access to our buildings because the residential units are occupied by their private owners. However, all the completed projects displayed in this video are projects we worked on, some with our external partners. This gives you an idea of what our finished work looks like. The interior at 0:57 to 1:09 gives you an idea of our grade C finished interior, this was a partnered library project with our team.

Rammed earth is healthier air quality, there is better insulation and less need to use air conditioning. In California only the rich can afford to build rammed earth homes. This is how I'm building my home.

Why only the rich can build rammed earth homes in California? Is the soil too expensive or where does the cost come from?

The big cement companies such as Ghacem, diamond, dangote, etc have hijacked the building industry with cement buildings for profit reasons. Most Houses in Europe and America are over centuries old so Africa has no option but to change course.Cost of houses in Ghana for example is so expensive due to all the cement factor from blocks, to concrete to plastering.

This is brilliant! I have often wondered why this method is not more popular in Africa, concrete buildings are hot in summer and cold in winter so you need to spend a lot in electricity all year around to be comfortable at home. There are beautiful example of beautiful architecture homes made with earth bags also. I hope that Africans will stop to follow blindly the west and do what is more appropriate for their own weather and resources. Congratulations, this is very hopeful to see. ❤️🇧🇷

Thank you for saying what I'm feeling. In US living in toxic environments with elements such as Carpets, pet dander, wooden floors, smoke damaged wood not processed correctly or not at all being used for them, as well as painted walls with unknown elements in them are not doing anything but elevating headaches and Allergies. So yes, these homes are more of what I'm interested in. Looking forward. Bless you all.

Sounds great. Housing costs here in America are very wasteful and deceptive. The key is starting with a good plan that orients the house to the sun. Water and solar energy harvesting should be added to that list for heating, cooling and growing food. A quarter to a half an acre extra for growing food, flowers and fruit trees can start to make your life pleasurable. Enjoy life. Another thing, you don't really need a lot of space. This becomes obvious when you have to clean that space regularly. Rather, we need to learn how to use space more effectively for multiple purposes.

Living in an area with good, fairly regular weather helps a ton as well! I've lived in Japan a very long time, so I'm used to living in very small spaces. So, I started thinking about building a tiny house in the States, but because it's become so popular, the prices have gone up prohibitively, never mind about the deceptive costs of land. So, I'd love something like this.

Hi, ❤️ from India , I think the reason that this isn't a widely used technique is scalability and time of construction. In India there r programs in which old earthen homes r getting reconstructed in villages with modern technology but ramped earth isn't used widely, for that reson. Though one thing is sure, that it can pass test of time unlike any other things.
