It's always exciting to win a Scrabble tournament, but it's especially exciting when you do so with a strategic brilliance. And that's exactly what Merris Stambaugh did this past weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia. Despite being fairly new to tournament Scrabble, Merris demonstrated in this position why he's surely headed for a quick rise up the ranks in the near future.
What exactly did he do that was so brilliant? Can you find it? Watch and see!

I've learnt a lot of CSW-exclusive words here being a CSW player. If I see Mack don't bingo with a high-prob rack then I know that bingo or the words formed are CSW-exclusive

Hey, former Youth European Scrabble champion here! just wanted to say love your content. It's fantastic to see you bringing Scrabble to the forefront of social media, much like chess has been. Keep up the great work!

Intuitively, REBECS seems better. If Merris draws Q, he blocks ORIGANS, but he loses spread to passing: after REBECS, Nancy can slow-play while Merris eats the Q, and after passing, if Nancy plays ORIGANS, Merris plays OBSCENER and she eats the Q. Otherwise, Merris gains spread: if he draws any of AGNOR, passing allows Nancy to play B5 QIS, which REBECS blocks without opening another Q spot; if he draws any of AGIORS, passing allows Nancy multiple turns (and to block REBECS), while REBECS allows Nancy only one turn (and scores 41 points immediately).

Yeah that's probably true, though passing is definitely more stylish and impressive (if Merris played REBECS it certainly wouldn't have warranted a video haha)

Back when I played school scrabble, I was in this scenario in a close game in a close tournament, and I still over a decade later regret not telling my partner that we should pass the turn. as a 14 year old, not winning $2500 because of a Q stick you knew you could avoid is painful.

Eek! That's definitely a painful lesson but one you know is going to stick with you... easier said than done to actually muster up the confidence to pass in a real game

I once accidentally played QO* instead of QI in an endgame because I played my Q next to a blank that I thought was an I, but it actually was an O. (The blank being an I would've also made a word, so that's why I thought it was an I)

I realize the entire point of the video is about a rare situation where passing is the optimal play, but how would SEEN at 7B have played out? Like a lower scoring REBECS?

A fascinating scenario. How many scrabble games end in a six-pass? Does it actually happen in tournament play? Also, congrats on taking the NA#1 spot!

It occasionally happens in the endgame if both players are stuck with unplayable tiles (in practice, it's pretty rare in top-level play as players will plan their endgame sequences). It's very rare before the endgame
@mackmeller
@mackmeller 2 месяца назад
Thanks! It's pretty rare (this was the 24th time at the beginning of the game in recorded North American tournament history), though it's more common at the end of the game if both players have one or more unplayable tiles and it's a closed board

I think signora is from italian and should be pronounced more like the Spanish Señora rather than separate g and n sounds

15-0 wow congrats Welp didn't know OARING is not in the dictionary, probably got away with it online multiple times (I feel that I've seen someone using "oaring" as "rowing" before 😂)

To be fair, which player's turn was being analyzed was also a giveaway.
