Mark Farner who was the amazing guitarist for Grand Funk Railroad or just
"Grand Funk" back in the 70s tells the story of helping write the 1973 #1 smash Were an American Band. He came up with the drum parts and the guitar line. According to Mark's interview he says that his former friend and drummer Don Brewer asked if Mark would give me sole writing credit for the song since he had never received a sole writing credit before. To be nice Mark allows him to have the credit and then the band broke up and then there was major conflict and that act of kindness ended up costing Mark millions of dollars in royalties. since were an American band became one of the biggest record in classic rock history. Mark tells the story in this short on Professor of Rock

Mark Farner and the New Power Generation is a complete class act. We rode our motorcycles to see him and band in Boardman, Ohio in the mid 2000's. A thunder storm drenched us. We walked by the room that the band was eating in before the show. He yelled out, You came to see us riding in this rain? We said absolutely. He thanked us for showing up, and took care of the four of us with food and drinks. Then they put on one hell of a show!

Don Brewer and Steve Howe of Yes should start a band together. They both have taken control of their former bands name and have each excluded their bands main creative member and driving force, Mark Farner and Jon Anderson. Steve Howe wasn't even a founding member of Yes. In my opinion they're both the equivalent of a couple of kidnapppers. The worse thing that can happen to a person is to have your child taken. If you're an artist or musician, the 2nd worse would be having your lifes work taken. Howe & Brewer? They truly, truly suck.
@NelsonMontana1234

I love Mark and think what Don did was douchy, BUT...if he gave Brewer credit for the song -- give it to him. I'm sure Don made some contributions to songs that are entirely attributed to Mark. And when he says he wrote the drum intro -- that just sounds fishy. Still, I get it. Mark got screwed big time and he is the genius behind the band.

Songwriting credits are bullshit and don't always reflect the actual creative work of the people involved. Every Breath You Take, sole songwriting credit given to Sting. Yet Andy Summers wrote the hook, the iconic guitar part.

Yeah, being a young man it's easy to be trusting and thinking that there will be plenty more, having that Bro code but ending up extending such courtesies to a selfish dick. CCR and other bands had the same thing.

And Mark continues to be crapped on till this day. GFR isn't functioning in any meaningful way without Mark. It's just a glorified covered band. The fans want Mark, Don and Mel to tour together again. It's so damn sad it very likely won't happen and it's not because of Mark.
@Mick_Ts_Chick

So how did he get stomped on for giving the writing credit to Don? He didn't elaborate. I'm sure money was a part, but is there more to the story I'm missing?

I love Mark and, I love Dennis DeYoung. But, they've both been telling their bullshit for so long they both believe it. They ought to sit down together and have a bullshit session on RU-vid sometime. They could make a million......or at least a 1/4. Great musicians. Great vocalists. Great songwriters. Fabulous bands. Monumental egos. Great bullshitters!
