My grandma used to sing this when I was a little girl. Man! Wow! Thank you so much for posting this song! This is when songs really kept to what scripture says!
Vmoacbr : I agree? I have been saying this since 1986 I was shunned! Now others are coming in taking our music and we are allowing it to happen. How ignorant ha be we given mist everything else away and gotten nothing for it. These others are making $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ off us.Why are we fighting for ownership. The young give rake the blues, jazz, rock & roll, etc.
THIS HERE is what used to be called a LIVE RECORDING no post preductiong redoing leads, no punches you had to know ya stuff and do it LIVE! I MISS THOSE DAYS you can feel the Spirit of God moving.
This song, Near The Cross by The Mississippi Mass Choir and Thank God For The Blood by The Florida Mass Choir are THE Easter Sunday gospel songs sung EVERY year.
I grew up Pentecostal Holiness, and my choir sang this too. So glad to have had a chance to lead this one out. The Holy Spirit always seemed tp back up this song with ABSOLUTE POWER. Hallelujah!
Such a great song from yester year, when I gave my life to Christ. Back in the day was Keith Pringel, Hawkins Family, Rev. Charles Nicks, and Donald Vails. This song was especially played on our gospel station around Good Friday leading to Easter Sunday without fail. Can't help but miss those days, but there are more to be had. Thanks for your post.
Yes this is a wonderful Good Friday song sung on Easter Sunday in the Black Church. Her voice is one of the most beautiful and powerful sopranos ever recorded. What a treasure!
This is our Good Friday song every year, for as long as I can remember. My mother sings it, and it's just not a Good Friday without this song to close out the service. This song just always feels like "home" to me.
When Jesus hung on Calvary people came from miles to see they said if you be the Christ come down and save your life but Jesus oh sweet Jesus he never answered them for he knew that Satan was tempting him if he had come down from the cross my soul would still be lost. He would not come down from the cross just to save himself he decided to die just to save me
All the Praise and Glory to our Savior. Yes the great songwriter Dr. Margaret Douroux wrote it, LaBarbra Whitehead sang lead, but Donald Vails version on this gem album in 1990 went certified gold and earned him a Grammy nomination. He was a great gospel talent.
Praise God!My grandmother had this song and every chance I had to listen to it I would. I have been wanting to hear it again for years. I am very thankful for RU-vid and its contributors.
Verse: When Jesus hung on Calvary, people came from miles to see; they said, "if you be the Christ, come down and save your life". Oh but Jesus, my sweet Jesus, He never answered them, for He knew that Satan was tempting Him. If He had come down from the cross, then my soul would still be lost. Chorus: He would not come down from the cross just to save Himself; He decided to die just to save me.
We can feel his present and knowing that we have asavior who won't give up or give in he's a savior who cant lose a battle this song takes us back to his presence when we couldn't help our self
I had the privilege of singing with. Donald veils choir in md it was a total experience he was a great musician and a historian of God gospel music such talent gone too soon thank God for his life
Oh how I remember this song!! I am praising Him right here at my desk at work! Thank you young person, for knowing good gospel music! I love most of today's gospel, don't get me wrong, but it's something about that older gospel music that you can feel to your bones.
OH Glory !!! Thank you Jesus !!!!! Hallelujah !!!!! I love this song...it takes me back ...way back to a beautiful place in my heart and sould.....AH Thank You Jesus !!!!
Thank you so much for finding and posting this absolutely glorious song. I remember growing up listening to this song on the radio with my family on our way to church.

The theatrics of church is a great experience. But the unpretensious quality the simplicity of the James Cleveland's version has a power will not be denied.
This here is a CLASSIC! I just brought the original recording of this song a few weeks ago. I miss the live sound of a recording, you can hear everything. Makes you feel like you were there! Thanks for posting this! dex (zm)
Happy Easter 2020!!!!! Never mind the pandemic that's going on; let's keep the main thing the main thing; my SAVIOR'S NOT DEAD, HE IS RISEN. HE LIVES!!!!!!!
I am being Blessed by this song on 2022! Thank you for sharing this song with us. This 🎵🎶 song has been singing in my spirit all week😊. Thank you Jesus for not coming down from the cross 🙌🏾. Thank you Jesus for deciding to die to Save me!!!
We are practicing this song now for Easter. I learned this song as a child and it is such a great song. There is a version that James Cleveland does too.
2022 bring back memories of my beloved church Hillcrest Baptist church Temple Hills, MD. Every Resurrection Sunday. Mrs Janice Smith lead this song. Sing choir.
Jesus action to not come down was powerful. I'm very sure they had a hard time trying to move through the recording just we had a rough time trying to proceed through sunday service after singing this song. I am so blessed right now. Love and appreciate your family. Your parents. Your siblings. Forgive those that have done you wrong- in words and in deed. Dont hold that thing so close to your heart that hurts that Jesus can heal. Let him fix it. Try Him. Trust him. Love Y'all
