I went to a huge auction about 40 years ago and found a custom made bronc saddle with the metal horn. Bought it for $120 and it was the best saddle for my lower back. As a young girl, I had a few nasty horse wrecks so was real happy to find a comfortable ride. I still use this saddle. And yes, when you get popped out this rig, you really don't know where you will land. The West has a treasure trove of stories - from the past and present!!!

As a daughter of a dairy farmer… it’s a 24/7. By the time you get the milking, feeding and cleaning… it was time to start all over…. You have to love the life!!!! No vacations…. You start at 3am…. Your work ends at maybe 2:30…Then it starts up again at 3/3:30….

I enjoyed seeing the family saddles and hearing the stories. I worked in a custom saddle shop and always enjoyed restoring well made antique saddles. They were definitely built to work hard and last. The homemade buck rolls. The bear trap and the old tree styles. The 3/4 or 5/8 rigs on the square skirt saddle, the in-skirt rigging on the Hamley saddle, oxbow stirrups and loop through seat was cool. Fine collection! Reminded me of the saddle museum at Kings saddlery Cool stuff! Great video!

I was in my neighbor's barn to see some calves and saw a saddle. They didn't have horses. So I asked if he used to ride. He looked confused and then seemed surprised to see the saddle. "Oh that. That was my grandpa's." It hasn't been used in decades. Their house and barns are filled with things from their grandparents, who were the original homesteaders. There's a lot of history out in the prairies still.

I've had a dislocated hip (put that on your to avoid list), neck issues from almost getting it broken, torn muscle in my L leg from a horse being ridden by a friend that kicked my horse but also got my leg, and got my R foot turned backward when a horse fell with me. That knocked the wind out of him, so it took a bit for him to get up and release my leg/foot. Now I'm 73. Got lots of random aches. 😁

Cowboy/girls are some of the tuffest ppl I think. Me & my boyfriend are still rookies w/leather tooling. An old biker friend/vet taught us to make belts. I need to push myself to make more different things, there's hundreds of things to be made from leather. I really appreciate the work that goes into a saddle,so much detail. Thank you for showing those. Itz amazing how old those saddles are but so well takin care of. Made to last many generations. I don't know that I will ever make a saddle or cowboy boots, never say never cause you never know. I told 1 well known cowboy boot maker that & I'm still new at making belts. He said don't count yourself out that he started w/making belts. I have thought of if I'm goin to make anything to do w/horses I'd start w/the bridles, that seems more achievable than saddles & something that needs replacing more often. I haven't researched the hardware too much. I do Luv horses what a beautiful powerful creature. When I was 11 I was racing another kid on a horse & I had a passenger, the leather part that goes under the horse to hold the saddle on broke. I flew off landing on my head & neck. I never told my mom,I hid the pain which wasn't easy. It wasn't my horse & I was told not to be riding friend's horses w/out adult supervision. My mom was a single mom of 4 w/no medical insurance. So you can see why I hid that I got hurt from her. I'm lucky I didn't break my neck. Man when you guys talk about getting dragged & thru bobbed wire I'm shaking my head. I've also had a horse take off in a field & it wouldn't stop at 1st. All I know is I pulled bk so hard on those rains as much as I could. My boyfriend has never been on a horse but wants to try riding one some day. He's goin to need the most oldest mellowest horse there is. Our dogs & cats don't really listen to him the way they do w/me. Well behaved for the most part w/me. I told him if you ride a horse they will know if you are a push over. I've only been around horses for a small amount of time in my life but enough to know the steps to saddle a horse, that a horse won't leave once you put the hay out & they are powerful enough you could get hurt or worse. My best friend in Jr High from a horse family had half of a horse shoe print/scar on the side of her head. The story with that was she was probably 5 or younger, her dad was putting shoes on the horse & my friend walked around the back of the horse & got kicked. So lucky to be alive. Even before I met her there was the golden rule not to walk behind a horse, how I knew that I don't know. L&R
