Sad ,but spending more then you can afford for dumb crap is one issue people have . My grandfather always said nobody ever promised you a rose garden. People retire with house payments, car, credit cards debt. If you have all of these you probably don’t need to retire. Get the basics payed off before you retire,it not easy ,but can be done .

My Dad retired at 63 and died when he was 64. I retired at 54 and that was 23 years ago. But most of my retirement I spent caring for my wife who had MS for 26 years. She has now passed and I am free to enjoy my retirement now. But I tend to get lonely and I've joined at retirees group that often goes on day trips. I walk a lot and often do 14,000 steps. This happened to my dad 6 months after he retired, he got cancer and was gone within a couple of months after that. This was a man who worked every day. Never took a day off and worked tirelessly to provide for us. That's why I try and balance my work which keeps my mind sharp with my leisure time. I never had children so that pressure to have to provide wasn't part of the equation for me. I try to live each day to the fullest because quite frankly you never know when it will be your last.

Oh my Steve, my mother is a perfect example of this! My mother worked for decades at the same job. She loved working and her job. A year before retirement, the major company closed and she was forced to retire early. She was a picture of health and had financially planned well for her retirement. Three months prior to receiving her first social security check, she dropped dead of a massive stroke!! Unbelievable since she had never even had high blood pressure. I remember studies being done on Military and Federal Civil Servant retirees based on findings that most died within 5 years of retiring. I was in my 30s at the time. I'm a Military Reserves and Federal Civil Servant retiree...20 yr 3 days military; 39 years 6 months Civil Service. I retired at 57. I turn 70 in two weeks. The commonality I found in both studies of retirees dying within 5 years of retirement was they didn't have a long term plan. Traveling, hanging out, etc., are short term goals...18 months, maybe 5 years...then what ? I'm pressin' on serving others.

Don't know if this counts with today's subject but I have a memory of when I realized my real worth to a corporate America company. A young man in this early 40's with a family and young chidren went out to lunch with his some of this teammates. It was a carload with him sitting in the back middle. He worked in a different building but my cubicle window looked over the parking lot and front of that building. I suddenly became aware an ambulance pulled up beside their car but wasn't aware of what happened. But that kind of news travels fast. When the men got back from lunch, everyone except him got out of the car. They found him unresponsive. He died there in the parking lot. It really struct me hard. I had worked with this fellow and just like that, he was gone. I started thinking about what was going to happen now. I realized if I died at my desk, the company would do 3 things. They would make sure my body got off their property, check with the legal department to see if they had any liability, and then they would post my job. More and more, I realized I had no real importance as a person. I truly was an FTE, full time equivalent. I know this sounds bitter. I wasn't bitter, I just changed my point of view to me instead of the company. Sorry for the length of this note.

I had a similar epiphany the year I worked my butt off, carrying the heaviest load yet received the lowest year end performance review having the most seniority in the crew. I had a fit in the office and took stress leave for 10 months (eventually I got workman’s comp on my own without attorney because of mental evaluation and the numbers I provided to prove my point). I thought about how much I respected my job (I didn’t work to get promotion. I just loved what I did) but I was a peg that could be punished if I didn’t change my work to placate a campaign donor (he wanted tax breaks). Since then I quiet quit my job, putting in bare minimum to not get fired until I could retire (I retired 3 years ago).

It also happened at my first job. The guy had one year vacation saved he needed to take before retirement, but didn't make it half way through. Also happened at my last job, my boss died shortly before retirement. Better retire as early as possible, you don't know how long you have left. I retired 30 years early, and enjoy every day. Hi Steve. I think I may have the saddest story of them all, which took place in Rochester NY back in 1995. A co-worker of mine (I did not know him well) was celebrating his retirement after 35 years. He was given a big party on a Sunday, attended by like 200 people, the whole nine yards. On his way home from this party, his car was broadsided by another and he was killed. When I arrived at work on Monday, there was a makeshift memorial for him in the "booth" where he performed most of his duties. It was the saddest thing you can imagine. Will never forget this.

@@theretiredlifewithsteve i’m not sure if it was due to the stress of the job that we all had. I worked for the Treasury Dept/IRS for 10 years, and ironically, those are the people that retired, and shortly died after. Our jobs were pretty stressful, but those people seem to be healthy and happy. This occurred in my 20s. I worked for the IRS from when I was 26 to 36. Needless to say, it did affect the way I approached work/life balance. I started taking all of my sickleave and annual leave, when I was able to. I didn’t want to waste any of it, because those people almost never took time off and worked tons of OT during tax season.

I agree that you need to have a hobby of some sort to keep you going. I know people who pass early after retirement because they just sit around and do nothing. Motivation is a key to longevity. You cannot be sedentary. I broke my leg 2 years before my retirement. I walk with a cane. This summer my sister, niece and two of my great nephews went and did one of those pedal rail rides. It was hard and I was sore days after, but I did it . That was one thing off my bucket list for sure. I'm 70, diabetic and have high blood pressure and cholesterol and medication keeps me going as well as an active mind. Enjoy every minute of the time we have left. So go out there: travel, buy a bike and pedal yourself around ( I no longer drive), keep active! Don't retire and sit in your lounge chair and let life pass you by! Motivate yourself!❤

I've experienced several coworkers who, upon retiring (one never even got to collect his first retirement check), passed away unexpectedly. Usually from heart attack or stroke. I'm of the thinking there's something to the sudden loss of the built-in social life work provides, the feeling of being needed and having a purpose and, of course, going from 100mph to 0mph in a short period of time. In the law enforcement community, at least in my part of the country, we can retire fairly young (for many reasons). After seeing a handful of coworkers pass away so quickly after leaving the job, I, along with many of my contemporaries, now retire as early as possible. We already take enough emotional and physical baggage into old age with us after a career in law enforcement...we need to do our best to make it to old age!

I'm a teacher at a community college, and just celebrated my 35th year, I'm always thinking about "hanging-it-up", but my life has changed a bit over the last year that keeps me on the job, a stress-free job I might add. I have known three people from the college who have died (or were killed) within days of their retirement. Two tragically in car accidents, the third was my officemate and dear friend of many years. Within 11 days of her retirement, she died suddenly of an unknown heart condition, of course I was in shock. Being a single woman without a family, she graciously gave generously to our college foundation where I was able to set up an annual lecture in her honor as well as a scholarship. They always say you shouldn't retire from something, but rather to something...words to "live" by.

Hi Steve! I was kinda forced into retirement. I had been a barber for 30 odd years, and developed a really bad back from standing on my feet. I wore out 3 of my lower discs. Had surgery and tried to resume but just l could not! I had about 6mths of being pain relief. I did not want to become handicapped! After accepting sort of l had to go through the process of trying to get SSI to receive benefits of not being able to work. Thank goodness l was married at this time to my wonderful husband that said I'll support us and you can just stay home! I didn't know how to after working all my life. I began working at 13 making extra money, not because l had to! It's still hard sometimes now l wish l could do something that didn't involve my back! It's hard to even take care of our small house! My husband will say don't worry your retired! That's how l started watching RU-vid. Anyway l would just say if you enjoy your work and you really don't have outside activities keep working! My husband is 68 and working full time and receiving SSI. The money is great and he can take off when he wants and his benefits are great! This was a great video! I found you and a lot of other RU-vidrs when l was hurting so bad and really couldn't function! I'm doing so much better than I've been in years thanks to a new Dr and meds! Take care and keep doing these videos! ♥️ You Steve

I'm 65 and plan to retire next June. I'm a senior programmer and data engineer and can comfortably retire financially. I'm not in the best of health, so this hits home with me. I have type 2 diabetes (controlled) and arthritis in my back and shoulders and hips, but somewhat controlled with medicine. I'm not overweight and I think my heart is strong with good blood pressure. So not all of me is broken. I still want to travel and do things after retiring. I too have had co-workers die either shortly before or right after retiring. It just isn't fair. One should be able to enjoy life after working many years. So, this has been on my mind.

Hi Steve! I worked with a guy who retired, i believe in his late 50s after working for the county like 30 years. He used to have one of those running counters that told him exactly when he would be done, ie 8 mos, 6 days and the minutes! I used to tease him about it, as when you asked him he pulled it out of his pocket and told you the exact time left until his retirement! When he finally did he died 2 months later of a heart attack. I remember when i retired at 60, we moved from Half Moon Bay (an SF suburb) to Ashland, OR. We sold our home, changed my recovery community, and left the choir I loved. It was quite an emotional transition. Most of the things that all I identified myself with were gone. Luckily, I got connected with the local 12-step community and local singing groups to help me with the transition. I could see how someone retiring without a support system could suffer a health crisis.

We have 491k equivalent at work with department chip in. Many ppl who joined the department didn’t sign up, saying they couldn’t be bothered or needed that 3% pay. 10/20 years they have nothing saved aside. They are forced to work close to 70 until they can get the most pension to live on. I signed up due to a coworker pressuring me daily after my training period. I spent 25 years to make my retirement acct into 7 figures and retired early on a small pension. I’d rather not have to work until I die. I don’t understand why ppl don’t want the extra $4k a year free from employer. My brother is one of those idiots because he is too lazy to fill out paperwork.

Great content and questions Steve! I often read the comments later in the day. I was told by a psychologist friend years ago that one key is finding a job that feeds your mind, spirit and is safe on your physical body as well as offering a decent wage. Those jobs are hard to come by for many. Sadly we take jobs out of necessity to survive and over time they are not good for our health (even though another might thrive in the same position.) But there are so many other factors that figure into this issue. I worked at a University which I enjoyed until the mid 2000's. Because of the economy, cutbacks & layoffs in education in Calif., my job changed drastically for the worst, but I wasn't old enough to retire but too old to find another position in the changing marketplace with good salary/benefits, etc. I even looked to move up to Davis and Humboldt but the same thing was happening there. I lost my enthusiasm with the new bosses and how they treated staff and students. Then a thought (intuition) came to mind driving to work one morning, this job is going to kill me! So I figured out a retirement plan and about how much I'd need to survive. I figured if it wasn't enough after moving here, I could get a local job till social security kicked in but it worked out. I too have known folks who passed close to their retirement age which is so sad.

Hi ER, I was incredibly fortunate enough to have two of those jobs. Your psychologist friend talked about. And it sounds like you were too at least for a while. Oh my goodness! I was just having this conversation with two people yesterday! I used to work in human resources, and I was shocked by how many people would retire and die within a year or two of their retirement. I also know people in my personal life who have died soon after retirement. I just last week lost a friend who died 2 years after retirement. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of July, and went into cardiac arrest unexpectedly on August 29th at the age of 65. There was a cleaning lady in my building in NYC who worked hard for years and was so happy to finally retire and she was gone within the year. It was so sad. You work so hard your whole life, and then don't get to enjoy it. Same thing happened to my boss's husband! And then of course there are all of those who died just before retiring. I had to retire early because of disabilities at the age of 56 and now I am 64. I think of all the people who prayed for me when I was in multiple organ failure and in several comas and they're no longer with us. And I used to be super healthy before my body suddenly took a turn. You never can tell and should just live each day as if it's your last and appreciate every moment that you can with the people you love. 🙏🏽💔🙏🏽😢

I retired officially almost ten years ago at 55 which was my plan all along. I am single and always have been, but have a number of hobbies as well as a live of travel in my now 61 year old Airstream travel trailer towed by my now 33 year old Buick Roadmaster Limited sedan. It was almost a relief to retire and not have to worry about being in the closet any longer as sadly, LGBTQ teachers in small, rural school districts are still under constant peril of being fired due to old moral turpitude clauses still found in some teacher’s contracts. Even without such a clause there is still such peril as a determined administrator or member(s) if the board of education can find other reason(s) to discredit and dismiss a teacher as I learned in my last position after 28 years in the high school classroom. I was several years from retirement so tried for three years to land another position, but failed and finally gave up. Had a health crisis shortly thereafter, and spent the next five years recovering to point that I could resume my summer travel plans.

3 employees at our company also died right after they retired. I was afraid the same was going to happen to me so I decided to semi-retire at 54. One year later, and I'm still here... WHEW! I still work 2 days a week to keep me busy. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Steve this was the main reason I took an early retirement. I had an experience where a man retired and moved into the "Masonic Home" (Retirement Home) and on the 3rd day he died..... Statistically "They" say that if a man lives to 65 years old that he will live into his 80's...

My grandfather worked in the steel mills in Baltimore for 40 years. He retired in the mid 70's. He had a heart attack the week he retired. He survived, but it was a shock to us, he was 65 like I am now and retired for 10 years. It was always in the back of my mind!

Working all you life is no way to live. You have to enjoy your life. I had a heart attack right after I retired at 61 to help my father take care of my mother who had a stroke and had dementia. Unfortunately my mother passed one month after my retirement. So I was able to get myself back to health and enjoy my retirement with my spouse. Unfortunately I had two more heart attacks. And survived them. I’m going to be 70 soon and still alive. I’m not ready to go yet.

My dad died a year before 65, so never got to retire. I turn 62 and thinking retiring now. There won’t be any retirement parties. The government hedges you’ll die before 72, so I’ll get $1,680 less if I retire at 62. It took me a year to find the contract I have now. They may or may not renew it. But finding work at this age is not easy. Another option is to work part time. It’s a tough decision.

I’m like Jim, when asked what do I want to be, my answer was always ”Retired!” 🤣 and my stepdad would say, “Yeah, but you need a CAREER to retire from!!”. Well, so far I have managed to be living MY DREAM without giving my valuable time and energy to some job or company. I’ve been self employed most of my life, had a corporate job for 10 years and then found myself downsized out of that job at 53. That following year I discovered the RV lifestyle and decided to sell my house, get an RV, and have been slowly making my way to see every state (except Hawaii 😜) in my RV. I’m 61 and still have to work some, but my life costs less then when I had my house and the FREEDOM I feel is beyond compare. If I died tomorrow, I’d have few regrets, and be so thankful that I have spent my last 7 years pretending to be retired!! 😉

In 1976, my uncle, my dad's brother was looking to retire at 65. 2 months before his 65th birthday he did all the required paperwork or social security and Medicare. The day after he died, his first social security check came in the mail. And by social security regulations, his wife, my aunt had to return that check. So we all need to remember that tomorrow is never promised to any of us

I have been retired about 9 years, I wanted to leave while I was still in good shape because I love to travel. I knew if I waited until I could barely walk I would never be able to do all the things I had planned for years. I watched a lot of people I worked with die within a year of a planned retirement or after leaving for retirement. It’s heartbreaking 💔 that they did not get to enjoy their family and friends after so many years of working. My parents both loved to work and waited until their mid 60s to retire, even then my Mom would sew and make alterations, plus her and my Dad began reupholstering furniture during the winter because they were bored 🥱.

Yes, I have heard of a few who retired and then died. I also had an associate at work die. She was due to retire in a few months and she decided she had enough of her diabetes so she totally stopped her meds. She died soon after that. I have a friend who works even though he can retire. When asked why, he said, "What am I going to do, sit home and die?". That older fellow you told us about was right: you have to have a purpose.

Some people hate working, but many don't. Many people enjoy making things or fixing broken things. They get a sense of accomplishment from making something better or doing something that hasn't been done before. If you enjoy being productive don't let others tell you there is something wrong with that.
