A young man, bored of his mundane life, sets out for an island rumored to be a solitary beach paradise. Movie name = check first 10 seconds of the video.
The real life location was flooded by tourists for years after this movie came out causing the environment to become despoiled. Kind of ironic. This is why you keep your secret haunts a secret. Once you put it on a vacation list in the media at large, it won't be long before it becomes another tourist trap.
Haha yeah very true I actually went there in 2006 at the locals suggestion, because he knew saying DiCaprio and Hollywood etc would draw people in. It really was as beautiful as the movie depicts, although it's a cove/harbour not a closed off lagoon.
Take it as a social study, people. Take it as a study and realize this is why the harsh words 'Stupid Hippies' do have an Existence-Reason. A right to exist. Richard is a loser and so is Sal; but that issue is more complex than just them being Losers.
@@thecritiquer9407 Actually so-called yoga in the west is just an exercise and not actual Yogasana. Yoga means union of body and mind to get complete relaxation. Stretching out the body is good but it's not actual Yogasana.
as someone who lives close to beaches like this, I didn't understand this movie when I was like 14, when I got older and a foreigner explained to me what is it like living in a big city (Lyon) with pubs and clubs and people everywhere, i understood why Richard thought the beach was paradise on earth. I guess you always want what you can't have!
Same for me. I think it really is better to raise your children in a small environment so they value more of what they see and what it has to offer than a big environment to immense to explore. It's similar to a garden and a jungle.
@@Zeithri Extroverts are those who seek the company of others to 're-charge' their social battery, while Introverts are those who seek solitude to recharge theirs. Overcharging is never good anyway. But, I was talking about stuff like social anxiety and claustrophobia. Just because one is a social butterfly, still doesn't make them not thinking about anxiety or diseases when they're around other people. As for my case, I'm not enjoying my time alone because I'm an introvert. It's a personal issue regarding trust and respect with other humans. I just happened to be an introvert when deciding to lock myself up from other humans.
This is one of the greatest movies time so quickly forgot. When it came out, it was advertised as more of an action thriller, so people were surprised to find a brooding, psychological drama when they went to see it. But it's brilliant when appreciated for what it actually aims to be. Fantastic story, fantastic cast, fantastic score, and Danny Boyle himself at the helm, directing.
I’ve actually been to the Phi phi islands where this was filmed. I think it’s ironic that in the film they desperately want the beach to be a secret but after the film was released it became a massive tourist destination and it got completely trashed. So sad that it’ll never look how it does in the film.
It’s true I went right before covid, and I was wondering “what’s all the fuss about? koh Lanta, Phangan etc are all way nicer.” It was smelly, plastic bottles everywhere, water was dirty from the amount of boats coming in and out. The main Phi Phi island even has a Pizza Company, 7-Eleven etc
This reminded me of the beach in my country, the place is called Boracay (has the white sand and the crystal blue waters) Since it was a popular tourist spot it became dirty and kinda gets crowded. Ever since the pandemic started, it got cleaned and then it became paradise once more

It's on Phi phi island, Thailand. It's not really a secret anymore. If you go on an island tour from Phuket or Krabi, the tour guides will tell you that this is where the movie was filmed.
I watched this movie many years ago and it really gripped me. I've been meaning to watch it again but thank you for this summary. I feel like I went back to relive the experience of watching it.
Ever since I watched this movie as a kid, I really wanted to see this paradise. last year, I visited this paradise called maya bay and words cannot describe how beautiful it is in person. less crowded cuz it was closed by the thai govt to preserve its beauty and natural habitat but they recently opened it for few months and then closed this place again so that they can control the traffic on this island.
I really.cant believe how people say they would rather watch the recap instead of movie. That is disappointing. People want everything now now now these days. Chill out and enjoy life. There is so much missing in these recap, especially in this one. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. You are missing out on a lot of good character development, nuances is character interaction and plot points. Much much more of the beautiful scenery. The atmosphere, feel of some of the scenes and characters trials are completely void in this recap. This is a MUST watch movie.
I still watch movies sometimes but I dont have time to watch every single one and I dont care to, I just saw a clip of this movie on twitter, was interested in the plot and found this video, if it didnt exist I wouldve just read what happens on wikipedia anyway. This isnt an alternative to watching movies, its just entertainment I wouldnt get otherwise because I dont have the time or the will to go through every single movie every released. Maybe this is a great movie and I shouldve watched it, but had this not existed I wouldve just went on my way anyway since it wasnt enough to decide to watch it, but sometimes I hear about a movie and then I will watch it or if im invited to watch something with my friends. Sometimes you will also be interested in the movie enough to watch it after or add it to your "watchlist" and watch it later when its out of your memory, these videos still leave enough out for you to be able to watch it later, its only 10 minutes with 0 dialogue Just wanted to explain why people watch these videos, its just to recap an old movie you like or to understand something better etc. its not to watch 8 of them a day (unless its a video you get recommended from a movie you would never watch anyway I guess) its just a short youtube video like any other, its doesnt replace movies for those that watch
When he hisses at the girl it's to show he came down all the way to the level of the monkey at his arrival to the isle when the monkey alerted the guards.

This kinda reminds me of some pink beaches in Greece. Tourists found out about them and the next thing that happened was tourists filling up jars with pink sand back to their homes. Well afterwards everyone blamed old pictures for “false advertising” 😂 This whole story had the same vibe with this movie for me.
Yeah, feeling like you've belonged in a special time and place goes a long way toward who you become as a person in society for the rest of your life. The more times you've felt that you belonged the more positive the outlook that you have on your fellow human beans as a whole. That doesn't mean you need to travel the globe to the ends of the earth to find belonging. The hardest and most rewarding journey that most people are trying to escape and avoid by traveling the world is the inward journey. Everything that you want from life is inside of you, period.
@@zeekay_yt1313 Honestly there are tons and tons of places on this Earth that are still like this. People in the US zero in on Hawaii but there are tons of places where you can have the tropical weather and nice beaches and it's like 100X cheaper.
Oh dude, this is one of those films that you CANNOT switch off. Once it's on, DiCaprio's performance (and the supporting cast) just hook you in. It's like Shawshank, it's un-put-downable. So fucking good this film.
If youre looking for a perfect beach with pure white sand and crystal clear water, that literally can be found everywhere in Southeast Asia, how is this an urban myth?
Because it's a SECRET beach where you go hang out with other white ppl and do drugs or whatever. Some things you can go to bad prison for, or be executed. So.. that's the urban myth part.
Man, that's so true. The Philippines has over 7000 islands 75% are uninhabited and Indonesia has even more with 10000 islands. Then you've got Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Those three, especially Thailand, have been inundated with tourists, though, thanks to this movie. I have family in the Philippines and I'll see movies and shows about some of these other places that do get inundated and wonder why the Philippines doesn't get as many visitors but sometimes I'm glad it doesn't. It's a happy little secret when I go visit and have beautiful little beaches and islands to wile away the day. God, I wish I could do that now. Screw u COVID
@@peepinR we have a few here in Australia at the hot tropical end where I used to live. Don’t even need to leave the country. Hell I reckon every place with a beach has some places like this. (And yes, unfortunately air travel is the one thing that really really helps viruses, and one finally realised… oops, seemed like a good invention 100 years ago. Screw all this!)
This is a serious display of humanity One happy group wants to just have fun for them selves but then others thinks its fun and join in then it spoils the fun forever
When the movie was shot ,phi phi island was almost untouched. Now the place is packed with tourists. I've been there 2 times myself. Last time I took a private longtail 6 o clock early in the morning and had maya bay and pileh lagoon all to myself. It was awesome without all the boats and people there. I saw a lot of sharks as well. I can advice everyone going there to do the same like me. Early morning private longtail from phi phi island. Sleep on phi phi island the night before you leave to maya bay. Longtails available from phi phi island only. Not from phuket or khrabi or any coast city. Have fun 👍
I highly recommend reading the book, if you like the movie. There are lots of differences and details which are omitted and changed in the movie. In the novel, Richard is a more likable guy. He actually respects Etienne and sees him as a brother despite his feelings Francoise. Nothing ever happen between Richard and Francoise, besides a friendly peck on the head, unlike the movie. It's shame Hollywood had to inject loose hookups as a subplot into the movie to make it more interesting to the teenage audiences. The source material is already good enough as it is. I hope Danny Boyle fixes all the wrongs in his new mini series or reboot.
I was playing this on the background while I was taking a bath when I heard "Lastly, Bugs comes up, grabs him by the balls" and it caught me off guard a bit
about the people talking about the tourists, i went and the beach is basically identical, they arent even that many people there, when i went there were like 20-30 tourists max. A few times i was even by myself
I don't care about spoilers. Sometimes I just want to be told the entire story with appropriately paced frames rolling alongside a well-scripted audio summary. This was really good. 🍊 (I have seen The Beach a decade ago and loved the location and the vibes. Things got emotionally and morally tense towards the end. Leo supremacy forever. Also Tilda 🧡)
I went there yesterday from krabi, first of all island is not in the gulf of Thailand. It is situated between the east coast of phuket and the region of krabi. It was busy with tourists and now you are only allowed ankles deep in the water for a brief photograph. You are not allowed to wear any kind of footwear on the beach it's self. The thai people informed the rules strictly which is good. At the end of the day the poor thai people have had an absolute minimum income over the last 2 years due to the world financial reset. (COVID) It's still a beautiful place to visit and the thai people are the most wonderful people in the world. Its a must see
Well that went differently to the book. Anyone who wants to see a darker ending should definitely read it. Quite strong story on how a group can disintegrate.
Man, thanks for the nostalgia trip! I remember enjoying this when it came out, think I probably also read the book, but had totally forgotten it existed

thanks for the recap! i remember watching this when i was a kid, and never understood what it's about and why they would find it to be a paradise. or mb i was distracted by bewbss.
Hey everyone here! There's a movie I've been looking for years now but just couldn't place it. I saw it someday on TV and can only tell a few points about it. 1) There are three friends (2 men, 1 woman) 2) They invent a communication device that can be put inside one's head through the nose. 3) They experiment on themselves by going to one relative who's studying balding wolves in the woods. He uses an instrument to put that chip inside their heads. 4) These three test this device. It's basically voice controlled and can call anyone. 5) They need investors for this chip but people turn them down stating that no one would want to get a chip inserted inside their head through a wolf instrument. 6) There's also a bad guy who keeps following them in order to steal this technology of theirs. I've seen only this much part of the movie but it was damn interesting. Can anyone tell me the title of the movie??? I don't even remember the cast. I thought this channel is just the perfect place to ask this question.
Damm bro when the farmer villain literally tells her to shoot him He literally knew what evil looks like because he was it What a amazing guy knowing he doesn’t have to kill anyone to make them leave permanently
The 90s, the last decade of the fearless traveller. You bought a ticket to an unknown land and you had to use your survivor skills to get by, no cellphone, no internet. People enjoyed the moment, no instagram or selfies just for the sake of getting likes. The beautiful sunsets in a remote island were only for you to enjoy, no evidence to show others what you saw. Just a moment, a memory that stays with you for eternity.
@@younghentaii1772 that’s not true at all lmao, people travel abroad way more than they did in the 80s and 90s. Though the trips are shorter on average, and it varies by income.
I can tell you it was just as bad in the 90s. The so called “Fearless Travellers” just carried around camcorders and larger cameras and obsessed about collecting as many stories to tell everybody back home. As a Mongolian. It was extremely annoying to have american tourists on one of those finding oneself experience hunting trips. Zero respect for people or safety (until they hurt themselves). Some places are forbidden because they are dangerous or are extremely significant to the locals not because we are hiding it from foreigners. But as long as it makes a good story who cars right? On the other hand German/Scandinavian tourists were the best. Extremely polite, respectful, and almost always prepared properly for the trip.
Wait, why was the bullet in the revolver a blank? I assume that the leader of the hemp farmers wanted to punish Richard since he's the one who screwed everything up Edit: I understand it now, it was so the leader of the hemp farmers could prove a point towards Sal. Thanks to all the lovely people who explained it to me in great detail in the replies
He probably wanted to punish her, since he's clearly been barely tolerating her for years. Richard was a troublemaker, yes, but the tension between the leaders goes way back and their issues are probably more complex
It was to get at Sal and to get them to leave. If she had shot Richard, they would have stayed in fear of Sal, but when she fails at an attempt, everyone runs realizing she would kill them but can't.
it was a big brain play by the farmer. He isn't stupid. Killing them off, could have runners, and they would need to chase them down. Then they would have to deal with authorities. I am sure they bribed main landers, but if it got out, tourists are being killed. That is going to drag in big politics. The 4 that got gunned down, was okay. Since none of them made it out. The rest of the community a few dozen, one could have gotten away. He also baited Sal. He said, she could stay if she pulled the trigger. He knew, the people would not support her false paradise, if she was willing to kill them. If they all sided with her, without that ultimatum, it could have lead to actually killing them all. I think the farmer isn't an evil person, just a bad person. He lets them keep their side, as long as they shut up and stay in their zone. He could have chased them away when ever. It is when things start causing problems for him, or could cause problems. Is when he needs to do something.
