Hhawu Zinhle. The guy did the right thing by talking to your family to find out about cultural requirements. Thats is regarded as respect in the Zulu Culture. He didn't say, he wanted to Lobola you, but he wanted to know how things are done in your culture. And he was responding to your comment about the baby's surname. He was being proactive and you should give him some Bell's . Clearly he knows and respect that, if he wants to take things further. He'll discuss that with you first. Wish you both the best.
I kind of see your point. But matters such as a marriage should happen way before you can go running to my family. You have to make sure i am aligned with the prospect of us getting married. Some guy will treat you trash but quick to run to your parents to discuss marriage just as a cover up.

In our culture a man pays for damages for impregnating a woman that he has not yet married. It's a token of apology to the woman and the woman's family.

Or what happens if he *refuses to pay the money* and the woman he impregnates also refuses to accept the money? I apologise if my questions seem rude I just love learning about different cultures 🙈😅
@@rumbsc if the man cannot pay the damages the baby takes the mother's surname not the father's surname.. We hardly see cases where a woman refuses to accept the money. In such cases it's usually the girl's family having issues with the guy's family maybe over the amount of money they want, cultural/traditional differences etc . Once that get resolved, usually the money is paid and the child can then take their father's surname.
Damages are to acknowledge that you have wronged the woman by making her pregnant before marrying her and accepting the responsibility (of the child), after you have paid "damages" the man can request to have the baby's surname changed to his and in some cases he can even ask that the child comes live with him but none of that will be traditionally possible without having paid damages
