This whole setup and premise has absolutely blown me away. I love everything you're doing, we lived tiny for 2 years before we moved down here to tampa. We're trying to grow more and are aiming to start a small scale mushroom farm soon. Our passionfruit vines have basically blotted out the sun, and we're excited to see what happens with our moringa. You've definitely inspired me to kick it up a notch and I now have a whole new rabbit hole to go down. I'm definitely going to investigate yucca because we have room for it in the back yard. Rob Greenfield growing more foods for own consumption is way better.a very sustainable living some are dreaming to become rich just to enjoy life but this is more enjoyable and more fun,,in the Philippines i enjoy planting from veg to fruit trees very relaxing i know its a hard work but watching your plants growing is like a therapy to me.
like what? eating indigestible plants? u do know that our body is designed to digest meat right? ive eaten meat since 13april, my body "aka"gut and liver absorbs, 95-99% of all animal products i eat. guess why? our stomach acid is 1,5ph value, a herbivores stomach acid is at 5,9ph(cows,horses,lambs,gorillaz,and so many more...,it takes 4,5ph + atleast to digest plants,so ur liver can absorb it, why do you shit out all the unessecary things? because your body does not need it. ever heard of that before? i take a shit normaly each 7 to 9 days. and it lasts for about 2minutes with 0 effort, and its not loose or to hard. Good luck doin that on plants u shit every 1 or 2 days... we evolved on meat, especially raw and rotten meats... some stlll exists today " fermented surstromming" "high meats" "high organ meats"... eskimoes, massai tribes,senegalesic ppl, dont have heart attacks/strokes/alhzeimers... these are manmade illnesses thats come from manmade foods such as "grain flour" pasta,pizza,bread,potatoes, and plants. 99% of all plants sold in store are grown with antibiotics, which kills ur gut flora.
Surprised he didn’t have a chicken coop. Chickens are a world wide staple for off the grid survival. Anyway I am impressed with how many things he made self sufficient pretty cool
@@cherriemckinstry131 Absolutely, one thing that you don't see very often at least here in the states is a whole food vegan or even one close to it. The artery clogging fats in meats, namely your more red meats not only clog the bodies blood flow but also the brain. Also take CBD as an example, it's non psychoactive yet it has an anxiolytic effect due to its anti inflammatory properties. Turns out just having mild discomfort in the body leads to psychological effects.
@@cherriemckinstry131 You've got that plus the psychoactive properties of compounds found in many types of plants most people in the states aren't exposed to very much if at all. And on TOP of that, living like this man sort of allows this reassurance in the back of your head that says job or not you're gonna be able to take care of yourself and i think that more than any of the other points I made is really what has this guy so happy. Because it's the main thing that causes most people to be unhappy, that 9-5 we think we HAVE to have or we'll die, that place that controls your sleep patterns, your diet, your relationships, your time, and your energy. @@PherPhur Yes i think that being a vegetarian or more so is good but what i learned is vegan meant no eggs or milk or anything that comes from animals. I respect that too, but i watched a video wbere someone said they were a vegan but had a hurd of milk cows, i didnt understand that.
How nice is to see someone as proud, happy and inspired as this bloke, especially in times like these, when millions are feeling alone and empty. I grew up in the country, and there are few things more rewarding as growing your own food.
I appreciate him being ration about the choice for having electricity. I can never understand why some of the off grid people never talk about the cons of actually living off the grid.
@@corbonzo1 depends on what you get i have infinite light during the day and game all night. iv only spent 5k on my solar system... but then again i look for deals i dont just get what sellers on youtube recommend i buy.
@@WhiteGravey I've lived in places that are completely off the grid and have no idea how minimal your power use is but it's not easy. It is expensive, and it's tricky. If you want a modest, modern living amount of electricity, you need to know a decent amount of electrical knowledge, or have a friend who is an electrician. Power inverters, power storage, generators. Light...isn't impressive. Light is the most minimal power demand any house has. A light bulb can be powered by a keychain solar panel. If you expect to run things like freezers...refridgerators, power tools, hot water heaters, basic modern luxuries...you have a lot more difficulty relying on something as on and off as the sunlight. Especially when its night, and you have to then rely on power storage..which becomes an even trickier task. One high powered technology kicking in can shut down your entire system if there's not enough power being generated/stored. We ran hydro-power (which in the Northern winter is a massive pain in the ass and almost always completley obsolete due to freezing) and wind power, and solar. All three, you'd still expect to lose power dozens of times. Fuses blowing, getting rid of sometimes excess electricity becomes an issue too. There's nothing easy about it. Perhaps it's easy if your only energy requirements is powering a 60 watt lightbulb, then yeah. If you're off the grid, you can't rely on one power source. It's nearly impossible to live well under a single power source like the voodoo magic that people think solar panels are. They're not perfect. They are indeed expensive, despite what people like to claim. any solar panel worth installing at a level that produces enough power for a house hold, becomes 10s of thousands of dollars. Solar tracking, the installation, power bank, the extremely expensive large gauge electrical cords, the further away the panel, the price increases exponentially. I dont know why so many people proclaim how "easy" green energy is. If it was easy, we would have given up fossil fuels. But we haven't because its massively easier to burn those or split atoms relative to the massive energy output.
I found it adorable when he rubs the leaves on his face😉. In Thailand, we kinda do the same on shucking the coconut on a sharp metal, but it is secured on a firm board and only be done by experts (yes, we have coconut pealing pro). Just be careful with it. Thanks for sharing the experience.
By "experts" you mean regular people who've been doing that for decades? It's how they peel coconuts in regular households for those who harvest coconuts from trees (not stores).
Hi Rob, I am from the Philippines.. Land of the coconut. 😊If you want to have coconut oil for cooking, just boil down coconut cream/milk until you see oil floating on top, boil it down some more until only oil is left in the pot. We use this oil for cookinh, body massage and for the hair. 😁
I love this guy, his smile is infectious, his appetite ravenous...all things to share with a needy, angry world...when I was his age I was a disciple of Ewell Gibbons, now I'm a sponge learning from the younger gen and loving it, foraging in my own yard daily...life is good, Florida good...!!!

It's not as dangerous as it appears to you. It's a blunt spike and it's a common way to open coconuts. I can assure you I know how to use the tool safely and well.
Haha, nice. I was just thinking if i was a woman i would love to marry this guy, seeing all the joy and peace radiating out of him. For sure he would treat me nice and appreciate all the things i give to his life. A nice example of attitude to absorb into your self as a man.
It's a trade off between the north and south. It may be better for storage in the north but you can grow things easier in the south and year round outside. You also don't have to worry about collecting wood and staying warm in the winter. The ideal location would be somewhere right in the middle.
Storage is not really a problem in warmer area. You could always use brining and sun drying method to preserve food. I think the biggest problems are pest and disease. Warmer climate means more nasty things to destroy your crops (and yourself)
You say that until you experience it, those hot summers and cold winters aren't no joke and require some SERIOUS planning. Not to say given the right preparation it isn't more ideal but we are talking lived here for a decade to get familiar with it type planning.
@@Centrioless Yes! This is exactly the issue I'm coming across. SO MANY PESTS in Texas. I'm struggling with tarnished plant bugs, cabbage worms, June bugs, and wireworms.
I was thinking a similar thing - that things grow faster and a lot.more in the tropics so you have more food in the garden all year round but it is easier to store things in the colder are as. I was thinking the amount of food available might even out and be about the same between the two areas, with the tropics being in the garden and the colder areas being in your storage (if you are organised)
@@PherPhur Oh i know, i live as far north as you can go before Canada. The winters are very long and cold. I know how hot it can be in the summers down south as well. That's why i think it would be nice to live somewhere in between. I've been thinking maybe North or South Carolina would be a good place to live. Not too hot, not too cold.
Hey Rob, i grew up making coconut oil for my grandma and I to cook with. Those ripe coconuts you have there are perfect for oil. How to make it: blend the coconut meats in a blender with some water. (The less water the better. It will reduce cooking time substantially). After you get the meat blended, give it a good massage to extract all oil from the flesh. Squeeze out the juice and filter it to get coconut milk. Cook up this milk until all water evaporated. Once you cook off all the water, you will be left with golden color coconut oil and some junks of coconut "meats". Filter out the oil, the bypass product is also great tasting. Eat them as snacks, treats, or add some salt and sprinkle on baked pumpkin you have there. I hope you will try this technique and make yourself lots of coconut oil to use year round.
Omg I love this man! We have 10 acres of mostly woods, about 2 acres for home and surroundings, but I cannot get my husband on board to live in a tiny house and off the grid lol. But I love foraging in our woods, teaching my boys and they've loved all the blackberries. Love this so much!!! We are debt free but our house is too big for my liking and want a smaller home and more acreage. Subscribed to both. Looking forward to watching Rob and his lifestyle.
Reina Natsumi In Stardew valley you do more than just farming. There’s foraging, wine making and other artisan goods. You also have to time when you’re gonna plant because you can’t plant certain crops in different seasons.

depends on how far away from the hordes his tiny house is. His food is tied to the land there, if the horde is in his back yard he would not be able to last long.
@@swatisri2409 i'm from a tropical country which is one of the biggest coconut producers in the world and that's also how we dehusk and open coconut shells here especially a large numbers of coconuts for export and making different products. it's easier and faster. these western people don't know tropical stuff, so they better shut up.

I love how he’s doing this and obviously sharing it on RU-vid. I would love for him to teach in detail his process on everything. I would love to live more like this and I think a lot of this skill has been lost in time. It’s a shame that this isn’t second nature to us anymore.
Obviously not since people used to live like this just before the Technology Age hit and people still aren't happy lol. Heck if the government didn't force me to pay taxes on the property that i paid off years ago I'd never work a job again especially since I'm completely off-grid creating my own power and filtering my own water and raising plus growing all my own food.

And way hungrier... I think his wonderfully healthy diet lacks some good healthy fats and could possibly do with more protein depending how much fish he manages to eat. How about getting a few chickens and adding eggs to the diet? Maybe a goat for milk, cream and yoghurt? Find an avocado tree somewhere to forage from ;)
It would be nice if people lived like this and I think people would be a lot happier BUT it simply isn't efficient enough to work on a global scale. This sort of thing demands a relatively large amount of land per person which is a problem with more and more people moving to both cities and areas with high population densities.
Since I can't pay the water distribution, I try to harvest rain water. I just try it for three months. It really helps. The problem is, when summer come, no rain for 4 months.
When I was a kid, my dad had a big account with a business in Michigan. We lived in Indiana. He would bring home bushels of various varieties of apples. We had a root cellar/cold storage room and we would wrap each apple in newspaper and sort them according to variety. We had apples fall through spring. I hated spending hours and hours wrapping apples but, the payoff was incredible! Pies, streusel, apple sauce.....unlimited apples.
Sad to say his is not doing anything for planet earth but sustaining himself planet earth needs a much larger scale of this if its going to help her starting from every day people
Luckily i live in the UK, i really want to have a home stead one day. I would grow loads of potatoes and root veg e.g parsnips, carrots and beets. Its nice and cool from October to March. So storing food in barns or basements would be easy for me. We also have 100s of wild edibles in our large countryside. Game like rabbit, pheasant, pigeons, quail and deer are found in woodlands. I would love to have a small house and barn with 4 acres by the coast to get fish. This video is very inspiring. I would aim to grow 60% of my own food, hunt 20% and forage 20%. We have loads of native nut trees so that would be a good option.
@@tektaloy3134 thats what i want to do with a 40 acre farm, but make it into a collective so each person has their own projects but compliments others, so that you may need garden compost but someone with animals may need a few veggies to feed the animals, so cutting costs and waste. Were thinking more of smaller or tiny home living. Thus having more land to do gardening or amimals or fruit.
@@ledomc2007 by having a collective of like minds you can live affordably as well as make a living and keep overhead costs down. No water bill, more solar or even mathane generator to cut costs. Thats the best part.

It's honestly so interesting and calming to watch foraging videos. When I was a kid I used to pick up edible herbs and leaves, fallen mangoes from my granny's backyard. Ah lost good old days.
Give the dried coconut to someone from Kerala. They will convert it into sweets and savouries. Try elephant foot, bananas, mangoes, custard apple, tamarind, coconuts, ginger, chillies. Grow garden bananas which yield flowers. They convert grey wastewater to oxygenated water. You can use coconut without filtering out the milk too in curries. They have fibre. Try the coconut chutney too. Come to Kerala you will learn about countless coconut food. Grow jackfruit and guavas too.

How long does his food last? He seems like he's got way more than he could eat and he is storing most of it on the shelves. As for his home, I actually envy him. Living simply and not paying for all the stuff we all get caught up in paying for.
Hey man, I live near you. My wife is a president of a nutrition club at a local college, maybe we could do a project together, or could get you to come talk on campus.
What you guys think is nutrients and what your body actually uses as nutrients seems to be miles apart. You look like a cancer patient. Your body is wasting away along with what I suspect was your brain. I hope you get well soon and realise this but I doubt it. Most probable outcome is you weaken your body to a point where you die from malnutrition or organ failure or even some disease that you normally would've fought off.

Universities and colleges teach things that can be backed by science. That's the whole point of those institutions. How would you like it if someone taught your kids that a spoonful of arsenic a day is the healthiest thing for you, just because they thought so.
Indeed! That usually prevents salt from picking up moisture. But to be honest, that jar of salt in the video seemed so wet that it would require quite a few repeated bags of rice. :) I think he could lose a lot of moisture just by opening it.
Pete, this is an all-time great. Rob makes so much sense and makes his life style look easy. I live in a tiny house in Maine during the summer, with the solar panels, rooftop water catchment and composting potty. It's not as easy as it looks. Also the coconuts are pretty scarce. So inspiring!
I have everything anyone could want - a mansion, acres of property, a watch for every day of the week, two high-end cars, a big-screen TV in practically every room of the house, a fridge and cabinets full of food, and a closet bigger than this guy's house. However, in many regards, I am almost envious of this man. Kudos to you, bud. More people need to be like you.

the way he's doing it is wrong it should be one leg in front touching the spike and the other should be at the back so you have a good balance and no tendency of falling forward.
I've been wanting to do stuff like this for years, including the bathroom compost system, but my family started worrying about me, thought it was crazy. I didn't want them to worry so I stopped.
I wish he were part of my farm collective project. Im in the Poconos in Pa. And want to make a 40 acre farm into a collective of mini farms with all the things you do plus a pond, chickens and another community garden here got bannanas to grow by cutting back and composting for winter and it worked!
Ducks are fun to raise and one duck egg is the equivalent of 2 chicken eggs Ducks produce more eggs per year than chickens they also continuously produce eggs longer than chickens do Ofc the egg yokes are larger making for a more eggy taste and they contain more whites which is better for baking Id definitely suggest ducks over chickens much easier to raise more of a mess than chickens but thats only because they consume more water (i mean they are waterfowl) so their poop is more messy but unlike chickens you can use duck poop immediately for fertilizer Its easier to introduce more ducks to a pre-existing flock than it is to introduce more chickens to pre-existing chickens They require less in terms of coops our ducks stay in an old shed with a window(ventilation is key with ducks pekins the big white ducks are prone to respiratory issues we own rouens and Khaki Campbells and we found that the pekins experience more respiratory issues than the other breeds we believe its due to their size and how they keep their bills moist so they can breathe our pekins have daily medication for their respiratory systems) but they’re real happy in one big ole shed with raccoon proof locks and nice thick layers of straw on the ground we like layering sand first then throwing straw because it helps soak up excess moisture Ducks are alot of fun we love our quacks
@@amanawolf9166 this is a great opportunity as you have your own land but there is cooperative pieces you benefit from but dont have the tax burden of owning outright, so less overhead. (Even dairy farms are becoming cooperatives sharing milking equipment..land to save money..)You can grow food, or make compost, or raise chickens, but its a permaculture lifestyle so not a factory farm but a lifestyle and more than one way to make income.

Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL dude coconut oil is super easy to make, grew up making it in the jungles of South America. Coconut is abundant we do not buy oils we make it coconut.
@Jack Snow you could decide to migrate here. Im developing a farm collective, so a person can get a garden plot or quarter acre, or an acre or more if your caring for animals. Since its a live in co.munity, no farm factories, or huge wear house production. People should do that on their own large farm. This is based on food security of organic food and water with affordable living.
You've inspired me to be more aware of my food waste and my food intake. I'm sure that makes you happy, it should. You ARE an inspiration to those of us that give a shit.
I have been watching several videos featuring Rob and he truly is an amazing guy with an amazing lifestyle. I have a question though, why doesn't he have chickens for eggs?
If you're looking to make good coconut oil, try sprouted coconut, it has a substantial amount already separated from the sprout on the inside. They are always around here in south Florida.
I will tell you the correct method to open a coconut. If you look at the top of the coconut, you will see 3 dots. One of those dots is where the coconut will sprout, and it's the softest part of a coconut. Take a strong skewer or something similar and just gently poke the 3 holes until you find the soft one. It will be fairly easy. Push the nail in and retract it. Drain and reserve the liquid through the hole. Now that the pressure seal of the coconut is broken, it will be much easier to crack.

Crack the coconut open BEFORE drinking the liquid so you can see the health of the coconut. I made that mistake once, and it turned out the coconut had started to go bad. I made myself throw it up, so I didn't get sick, but I learned a very important lesson.
Lauren Simonelli That’s a good way, but another easy way is to get a butchers knife and drive down into any part of the coconut until it breaks open. You want to hold the coconut steady in your hand or what I do is use my knees to hold it while I hold the knife with two hands. I hope this helps!
My parents did lawn work. They'd dump the debris at this dumping ground. These guys would come in with massive trucks and drop hundreds of coconuts off from working on palms. One day my mom asked if she could take them. They literally filled up the entire bed of my dads work truck with coconuts and brought them to me. They were perfectly fine. Still in the husk. I spent two days debunking them, cracking them, then made coconut oil, cold process. It's so easy. And if you need tons of coconuts I suggest looking for one of those dumping areas where they take plant materials (make sure it's well away from trash obviously). But you can literally load up on as many coconuts as you want. We made a deal with one of the guys who would give them to us for free and I'd use those for coconut water, etc. I literally will never pay for coconut water ever again.
The problem with that is that there would be no economy thus a lot less jobs. Nothing would be bought and there would be no money circulation or anything.
growing food is the most natural thing, no one needs experience.. i think the way he lives, is inspired from Indian traditions. Its amazing what he is doing extraordinary
