The reason is that, when our brain feel certain feelings, it excretes responding chemicals into the body. And body gets adjusted to this chemicals, needing them to feel good or familiar, like needing a drug. So, getting out of abusive relationship equals to abstaining from drugs. One even can know it's harmfull to stay but simply can't make any rational change because all body, including brain - wants it. So, changing body's chemistry is the clue to salvation. People who are cauth up in this viscious circle are true addicts and need thorough therapy to clean themselves.

Hope and despair are powerful driving factors.
