I love Matthew Kelly's videos. He is very knowledgable and helpful. I'm so glad you interviewed him and are highlighting him. People need to know about him.
I’m not a potter-my hobbies revolve around yarn & fabric mostly-but I really enjoy watching how pottery & glass are made, which is how I found your channel a few years ago. The chemistry of color is fascinating to me with pottery (& glassmaking too) b/c the color of the glaze looks nothing like the end result, unlike dying fibers. If you’ve done a video about that before, I may have missed it, but if not, maybe interviewing someone who specializes in making the glaze powders (& maybe discuss the changes in that process over time, like colonial times vs. modern) would be interesting. Thanks, Jon! You’re an inspiration to artists of all kinds, not just potters!
Alex Long Raku in Encinitas California. He has some RU-vid videos if you want to look him up. He is a really wonderful person and would be great to interview. He does some guest instruction at Palomar Jr College and that would be an interesting addition getting the students in Jon’s video.
I think the interview idea is great. Can't wait! I think Matthew is wonderful and does beautiful work and makes informative tutorials (ditto for you, by the way, though your personalities are so different, which I also think is cool). I was thrilled when you two got together. Keep up the good work!
Great video! You could try to interview potter's from different regions of the Country at some point. Each region has aspects that make the pottery there unique so that could be interesting.
Thoroughly enjoyed the interview. Your questions were on point and well-structured to promote full informative responses from Matthew. Great job. Please continue.
Jon, I enjoyed the video and look forward to seeing more of them. I’ve followed both you and Matthew for a long time. I really enjoy wood firing, but there’s no way I could get away with that in town. I’m toying with the idea of getting into business as I do make and sell ceramic pumpkins n the fall and do fairly well with that. Interviews Ike this one with Matthew are helpful and entertaining. Thanks for what both of you do with pottery and RU-vid. Cheers
Well worth the time to watch. You are both really good folk and RU-vidrs are lucky to have you sharing your works and pottery skills. Cheers and be well...Freddie
What a great interview!! Such great information! I wonder what people do when they are a potter and start having pain in the wrists and hands! I’m struggling to figure out what I can and can’t do because of this!!
Great video. I love you and Matthew Kelly so, I loved this video. Maybe another potter interview could be Florian Gadsby. I still would like to know where to get that metal foot tool that you used.
Bob Witt of good earth pottery from Indiana. He's been turning gas fired for 50 years, he is a retired high school ceramics teacher that influenced thousands of students.
Andy Ward. Go See and visit Andy Ward in Arizona. He's super into primitive pottery and has a huge following on RU-vid. If you do end up going, Call me and I'll go along as your camera person. I'm a retired TV Photojournalist. Award-winning videographer and editor. I'll do it for the learning experience.
Thank you so much. When I was 8 I told my mother that I wanted to be a potter and she told me not to be stupid artists are always poor. I'm finally getting into pottery at 60 and am living it. Your remarks in this video have inspired me even more so thank you.🥰
Great video... I have been doing pottery for a year and a half and you guys are my inspiration. I am almost 70 years old but I fell in love with Pottery. WIsh I did it long time ago.
I love this. Have been a potter for more than 40 years but had that day job. Now retired full time potter. We live in the middle of now Colorado. Miss my potter friends and community of potters. When I was in high school I was told only 1% of people are artists. I thought well that will give me 99% of the people to sell to. Parents thought otherwise. Thank you for this series reminds me of my potter friends
I love how you put that! 99% of the population is there to support your work while you go on and be that 1% of incredible and creative artists! I would love to see some of your work if you have it posted anywhere, Sheila!
Omg I subscribed to Matthew Kelly a few days ago and was talking to my roommates about how underrated he is! He is a great teacher, happy that you two are supporting each other. It’s funny because I was just thinking about how I shouldn’t be the only Potter noticing how awesome he is at this
I purchased an urn for my fathers ages from Vaughn Smith. The man is so nice and easy to talk with. He has been a professional for 40yrs and has an easy way of teaching. His life and business experiences would be wonderful lessons for anyone selling pottery. He is doing something right! Love the Mathew Kelley interview, great job!
Thanks Jon and Matthew for this video. Loved the way it turned out. I have to say as a potter who is just over 2 years in both of you inspired me 100% so carry on the good work. One day I may get to the states to visit you all. Lois Hook Pottery UK
Jon this was an awesome video and launch of what seems to be yet another way to put life into what people physically do in the ceramic world. Hearing about Matthew's journey was amazing and knowing what other potters endure, experience and dream to get them where they are today. I think you have really hit on something. Everyones journey is different yet interesting and inspirational not only to other potters just starting out but to the entire art community. Putting a face and the experience of potter to the pieces they create for others to buy, really sets meaning and depth to a mug or pot that we come to love and use everyday in our own lives. We'll done
Come hang out at my school...:) You can see what High School kids are making..:) Not just me but my students as well. Come visit AZ...:) I even have an extra room for you to stay..:)
Love this interview format! Loved your Grandpa’s interview a while back, as well! Would love to see a studio tour/interview with Linda Christensen, Simon Levin, Jack Troy, Mark Hewitt, and Richard Bresnahan. Or any wood burner! Thank you!
Thanks for the video Jon. Really enjoyed watching you both during this experience. Matthew’s ability to teach and educate all of us was inspiring. I was surprised to hear how dedicated and committed he is to his art.
Thanks Jon... really interesting and very inspiring. It looked like you had so much fun with Matthew and co. I’m just off to throw 100 identical mugs now!
I find this the most informative and entertaining of your videos. Great relaxed interviewing style: expressed humility (and may I say reverence) by asking questions that we all would want to ask while experiencing a new process. Wonderful engaging conversation. Do More.
I loved the interview, you two are my favorite potters. Jon I hope you can interview Joe Thompson at Old Forge Creations too. My husband and I have learned so much from both you and Matt. Just watching you throw your pots, how you place your handles, approach your vases, glazing....its all you teaching, me learning. Thank you both.
just a thought you could not just interview established potters like Simon Leech or Vaughan Smith but an idea is being master potter, going to up and coming potters visiting them in their studios and instructing how they can be better potters or how they can do better on the business side of pottery selling and production exchanging ideas.
yes, please continue these video's.... ik can imagine they take a lot of time to make.... but you definately have an audience for them..... suggestions i do not have.. i'm to far away from you, living in the netherlands. but i'm sure you will find interesting people to visit....
Thanks for that! I'm a big fan of Matthew and his RU-vid channel. When covid is over, Jon, come to Nova Scotia and interview Vaughan Smith. He's a wonderful potter who's been at it for 40 years. He has a RU-vid channel as well.
An interesting pottery from which I've bought a good bit of pottery is Nichibei Potters in CA, operated by Cheryl Costantini and Mikio Matsumoto. From what I understand, Cheryl apprenticed in Japan. Mikio was a businessman who gave it up to become a full-time potter. The style of both have a Zen feel. Love the ash-glaze vases of Cheryl and hope to one day afford a piece by Mikio.
Would love to see an interview with Meg at Gemini Spirit Pottery, Tina Vidak of Tina Vidak Ceramics, and Sara from Parlor Room Goods. If you make it to the UK Joe Thompson from Old Forge Creations would be great!
Oh my gosh, your video made me miss North Carolina so much! Where I live in Kentucky there is NO pottery tradition and I miss visiting Seagrove. 😪 Excellent interview with Matthew Kelly. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Jon for setting up this video. What you both said about being able to earn a good living JUST from pottery is absolutely true . If that's what you really want then YES you can do it. I did it for 10 years and the 2 of us survived very well on the income `solely` from pottery. You have to seriously want it though, be very realistic and be prepared to put in all the hard work that it takes, just like YOU both do. Great video and nice to hear you both discussing all those things, thanks for sharing this with us Jon & Matt.
Alex Long in Encinitas California does some wonderful Raku. What’s even better is, he is one of the nicest and thoughtful artist I have met. He loves young people and teaching and sharing what he knows. I really enjoyed this video! I have shared it with others and thank you so much for making it and the other ones that go along with it. I love wood fire& salt glaze pottery! You and Matthew Kelly worked really well together, and made a wonderful team. Jon, I hope you get your wood fire kiln going someday!
I just finished my fourth wood firing and will do my fifth in a couple months. You're absolutely correct in it being a community thing, and the people are just fantastic. So much knowledge and experience has been shared between stokes 😄
Great video and awesome idea to share an experience with Matthew! I love both of your channels. I saw Jessica Putnam mentioned as another potter to interview; I concur. Obviously, Donte would be a hoot, too. For many of us, we love to watch and learn from many different artists/ RU-vidrs. You all are not really competition with one another, but more mutually reinforcing supports for potters and other pottery lovers. Your idea to work with an interview other potters will only strengthen that community. As always, thanks for sharing!
Great interview! I love that Matthew built his kiln with others in mind. As a member of my local potters’ association I appreciate knowledge and experience from others so it’s amazing that he created this asset to share with like minded artists. ❤️
Greetings Jon. Artist highlight series is a great idea. Learn from all potters’ journeys. I started throwing in my late 50’s. Now sell some of my work. I would be interested in potters who fire in electric, gas as well as wood kilns. Particularly potters firing to cone 10 in electric kilns. When do they change out elements? Ever fire on shells in an electric kiln? How can we get the best from any firing method. The interviews provide a win win situation for both you and the other artist. Several of my favorite potters are older than I am and retiring in upcoming years. Would be fun to hear from them. Good luck with this.
Jon, Simon Leach would be a cool interview. Marie at Pottery Crafters who is the opposite of Simon Leach would be very interesting. Great interview with Matthew Kelly. Just visited him today and he is just as he came off in your video. He had only wonderful things to say about your visit.
I'm in my first months of pottery and can't wait to be able to pump out 100 consistent mugs. Y'all really inspire up and coming potters. I know I can do it seeing how much I've learned in such a short time.
Great video! Would love to watch anything pertaining to pottery. I did a little throwing when I was younger. My granddaughter has done some in college. Her work was beautiful. I think it is in our blood. Bring on some more!
Kurt Hammerly would be another cool one, his process is a bit different from the "traditional" form of pottery that everyone imagines. Especially his 3D clay printer
Great video, but the whole "never sold any of them" line is obvious clickbait. Even watching the video almost half of it is just talking about selling the pots to people, so maybe you should change the title?
Good morning. Great video. I live in Arkansas where natural clay dirt is abundant. I was thinking of building a small wood fire kiln for bonsai pots, flower pots. Was wanting to use natural ingredients from start to finish.
Thanks Jonathan...that would be a great idea to interview other potters...i learn so much from you guys and would bring attention to these other potters...thanks for the interesting videos..you do wonderful and creative videos...
This was fantastic John. Matthew would never have talked about himself like this, great collaboration. Yes MORE!! Simon Leach? What about Susie McMeekin and Steve Sheridan... oh, that would mean you would have to come to Australia! ;)
Simon Leach would be fascinating. He's a curious mix of old-school British tradition and DIY maverick. I don't know of any professional who's gotten more mileage or better results out of electric-to-gas kiln conversions or homemade treadle-wheels.
I might be wrong but Matthew has had a unique experience - growing up in a place where as a teenager, his choices were not limited to slinging burgers or stocking shelves at the grocery. Living in an artistic environment like Seagrove was a huge advantage.
I really enjoyed watching the wood-firing that you did. Watching this has really added to that and is very inspiring, thank you. Would love to see you collaborating with Simon Leach or Earth Nation Ceramics. One of the great tradition, the other of newer times. Both extremely talented and using You Tube to great effect. Amazing to see/understand Matthew’s strength in people to people sales but acknowledging the value of “on-line”. Xxx
