I just graduated from HS in June 1977. I lived 45 minutes south of Oakland and was very fortunate to be at a lot of The Day On The Greens. They were recurring concerts in Oakland, California, presented by promoter Bill Graham and his company Bill Graham Presents. Held at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, these events began in 1973 and continued into the early 1990s. I was at this LZ concert in July 1977. Many of the kids in this video are in their 60's and 70's with grandchildren & great grandchildren. Those were great times. There will never be another time like this. Forever in my ❤️

In this live version, you can feel the energy expand and just about jump outta the screen of your computer! Seeing the music being generated -- and ENJOYED BY THE CROWD -- adds so much depth to this song. And all those lovely teenie-boppers and hippie chics are now grandmas -- tempus fugit! 😪

Three months later on Oct. 20, 1977, a plane crash would take the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, & back-up singer Cassie Gaines! Such a shame!! Lynyrd Skynyrd takes me back to my High School days where everyone played the 8-track in their Dodge or Camaro .. I drove a VW bug! 🚗〰️🎶🎶

Dude, I love your reactions. This was a band that meant so much to me when I was in junior high and high school and really it was only when I was in about 10th great one in the plane crash happened that ended it all. It was so crazy we were all devastated and there's so much to say about it that it's impossible to describe. That band was a force of nature. And not just in the rave-ups like this, also in their ballads they just kicked ass. They were all so incredible.

I have seen Lynyrd Skynyrd twice over five decades. 1973-2014 The last concert I saw was in Oneonta N.Y. Their guitar playing is the stuff of legends. Great reaction again. Have a Spectacular Day

@@AliasMark69 but to me I'm sorry, that's not Lynyrd Skynyrd. That's a tribute band. And yeah I saw them after the fact although within a few years after the plane crash actually with one of his brothers fronting it and it was okay but it's not Lynyrd Skynyrd. There is no way that you could ever say that that is Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crashed. It's not it just isn't.

@@stevedahlberg8680 I hear you, BUT tell that to the band who still go by that name with great pride and do a damn good job at it. Johnny sounds very much like his brother and the rest of the band is basically the same sound/members.

Thier best concert was in 1976 when they played 3 nights at the iconic Fox Theatre in ATL. I was there all 3 nights. It became thier live double album "Onne more from the road". I've seen them a dozen times or more and those 3 nights in ATL were thier best performances ever.

Back then, we went to the movie theaters a lot and the drive-ins. Because the Internet had not been invented yet or at least available to the public much less the world wide web and then later social media. The only way to know about this stuff is from the radio and buying records and talking with friends and maybe some magazines like Rolling Stone and new music express and stuff like that. And then if you're lucky enough to go to a concert live, then you got the real experience. It was just such a different time. You notice that there's not a single cell phone in that entire crowded packed massive audience. Nobody is distracted that way, everybody is there to enjoy the moment 100% and not mess around with bullshit.

The Three guitar freight train, bass, piano, drums, 3 backup singers and RVS. Gary plays slide for Vocals, then Allen Collins Plays Solo(in all White)... and in this live version, Steve gains, who joined the band a year prior, kicks in halfway through the solo, so you are hearing 2 guitars in sync for the last 3 minutes while Gary changes over to help bass line with G,F, C notes.

Honestly, my favorite part of this version is you get that great Billy Powell solo piano number. I love that bit. Though I also adore that from-below shot of Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, and Leon Wilkerson in a row like three rock gods.

on the studio version of "Free Bird," which appeared on Skynyrd's debut album, Collins played the entire solo himself on his Gibson Explorer, with Rossington playing rhythm on his Les Paul (“Bernice”) and adding the slide fills on his SG

The hat that Ronnie is wearing in this show is the same one his brother Johnny Places on a Mic Stand in the middle of this song performance. He does it in the last time Gary Rosington was with them.

Hey man I really like your reactions. I think there is another song on this album that you would really like called Penthouse Pauper. For some reason RU-vid never wants to immediately autocomplete that request. But as soon as you type it in you'll get it and just do the studio version. It's so hilarious and it's funny as fuck but on the other hand it's just a great example of really slow tempo rock blues but that gives everybody a chance to just totally go off inside that space if you get what I mean.

It was an amazing performance and sadly it serves as a sort of Goodbye from that group, as they'd lose lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines in an October 20th plane crash, just 110 days after this July 2nd, 1977 concert. GREAT reaction video! Great song!

Skynyrd is the gold standard for southern rock. If you haven't already, definitely check out Simple Man by them -- gorgeous song. I'd also suggest Can't You See by the Marshall Tucker Band and their live version from the Grand Opera House in 1973, which I think is even better than the studio version. Toy Caldwell's voice is no joke.
