I composed this He Mele No Lilo Dance, from Disney's Lilo and Stitch, by piecing together documentary footage, the actual film's animated sequence, and taking the artistic liberties needed to fill in the gaps and make the dance flow.
I'm not a professional Hula dancer, so for pristine technique, look elsewhere, lol, but I figured I'd post it, in case anyone else out there is like me, and wants to make absolutely sure they're as close to the movie's dance as they can get.

I am glad you showed the original footage of the choreography. I don’t think many people know that the reason it feels authentic in the film is because there were dancers that modeled the dance and movement’s. It feels magical, because the animators did there best to depict the hula correctly. :) It’s one of my favorite animated dance scenes, because of that effort!
@BrightWulph
@BrightWulph 2 года назад
Without a doubt it is some of the best animation in a modern Disney film, mostly because the animators were told to draw exactly what they saw. A tilt of the head, a certain arm movement, the way how their bodies shift. All of it was precisely depicted, and the opening of the film shines for it.

Chill they literally state it is also culture dancing. They’re simply stating many of these dances derived from the same place as many of the people of the places did. That doesn’t mean that their dances and cultures that they’ve built on since are not unique and important to each culture in and of itself. Simply that the similarities of story telling through song and dance is practiced in other areas as well with different name-sakes.

That's a hip twist, very common in Tunisian dance. As a generalisation regarding Hula dance the hips are an accompaniment to the main part which is using the arms and hands to express the mele (song). The Kaiko style which could be said to be the most "authentic" hula does not really use hips at all. The hip movements really came along with the more Westernised songs that had a sort of "flow" or rolling rhythm. I haven't seen the hip twist being used anywhere else in Hula. However it works very well here, and it animates very well so that's why I think Mark I' choreographed this in.
@litobeatz639

@@JanSilins Hip movements were very common in hula before westerners settled in Hawaii. That's why the missionaries discouraged it because they thought it was too sexual for them.
@JanSilins
@JanSilins 2 года назад
@@litobeatz639 Interesting.... I was really thinking of the Kaiko style as performed at the Merrie Monarch Festival over the years and in this I noticed that the hips were not utilised very much. My belief was that this is the closest to the "Authentic" style. However on reflection I cannot see why hips were not used before the Missionaries came, it is natural to move all parts of the body, not arbitrarily keep that part still. Perhaps you could point me in the direction of this specific aspect, obviously there would not be any film footage or there may be odd bits here and there, but certainly it would come up in writings as in diaries of events around the time before the Missionaries came

2:06 I dunno why most of the other interpretation of this dance remove this part in their routine. It's on the movie and it was a beautiful part of it.

This is beautiful. Your aura is shining Amy, it made me really cheery watching your dance, gave me the best lively, yet calm vibrations. Music can surely heal, but even more, if you become one with music. ❤️ Thank you for this composition, I will try it myself too! Can you just tell me please, in case you know, what does the last line means?
@SakuraKiss146
@SakuraKiss146 3 года назад
Aww, thank you for the compliments! And, yes! The last line, "He Inoa No Kalani Kalakaua - kulele!" translates to "In the heavenly name of Kalakaua - cast forth!" Kalakaua was the last king of Hawai'i, and his sister, Liliʻuokalani, was the last queen (and the last monarch) of Hawaii.
