Austin & I felt like Gideon was falling a little behind in some areas of communication and comprehension so we took him to Regional Therapy Service Rogers to get a screening test to see where he was at. I really hope this video is informative (for you moms especially). I learned so much and wanted to share this with you all in case you didn't know this service was available or how it can help. To watch part 2 of this video click here ( • Gideon's Evaluation Te... ).
ALSO! We finally got our RV painted and it is ready for flooring. So exciting! It's coming together!
Screening Tests help you pin point exactly where your child's strengths and weaknesses are, they can test their Speech, Language, Fine Motor Skills... ect. Again! If you want to watch part 2 of this video that dives deeper into all of the details, click here ( • Gideon's Evaluation Te... )! Thank you for watching!

One thing you can do with Gideon is to ask him open-ended questions. So for example, instead of saying, “Did you tape that around your hand?’ which only requires him to say yes or no, ask, “Tell me how that tape got on your hand,” or, “”How did your hand get blue tape on it?” That way, he has to think cognitively and use his words.

I did that. I was stunned what my daughter did. I asked what kind of juice she wanted. The reaction from her: Pick a chair, pick up the milk and fill up her cup. With a triumpf smile she looked at me and left the kitchen. 🤣 Another time she cut her hair herself. When I asked who did that, she smiled and picked up the cat. My little one responded to my question: She has no scissors, my daughter pressed the cats paw and then showed me her claws. I ran into the kitchen and started laughing. Now she is speaking.. but around Gideons age... just few words.

Early intervention is the best! I have two sons on the autism spectrum that progressed so well because they got screened & had early intervention. It helps with any delays. Glad you’re getting Gideon checked out.

I have 2 sons on the spectrum as well and early intervention is definitely important. My oldest son is 20 and he just started college. He had poor verbal and motor skills. My younger son 16 and a straight A student. They wouldn’t be where they are without early intervention.

Boys can be tough because they develop differently. My two sons barely talked, even at age 3. Then my youngest daughter came along and she was counting to 20 before she turned 2! I’m sure it’s reassuring to have him assessed, but every kid is so different, and their development isn’t linear ❤️

I'm a huge fan of having children assessed at that age. My daughter had a wide vocabulary at age 3 but had a slight lisp. She passed her assessment with flying colours, but had a slight tongue tie, which hadn't been picked up. It was a minor surgery and, with the help of a speech therapist, she quickly caught up. Love your RV.

The only advice I will give is never ever ever say anything negative in front of Gideon! Never to him or where he can hear you. He will take your words to heart & feel less than and he'll always be looking for approval bc he'll never feel "good enough." Always talk to his therapist with him out of the room and where he can't hear you AT ALL.

I think it really depends on the child and what is being said. My youngest is around Gideon's age. He was premature and has always had some challenges to overcome. I think it's ok to teach children that there is always room for learning and growth. No necessarily that you want them to "be like so and so" but personal goals. Every single time the therapists set goals for my son (even as an infant) it seemed like he heard them and suddenly got motivated lol

We had the assessment done and he started therapy on that part of the time he was in preschool. At the start of kindergarten we had decided that it would benefit both of them to be in separate classes. Worked out great . Both high school graduates. I'm a speech therapist. I'm so glad you followed your mother's intuition and had him assessed. Good job! One thing I'll say about eliciting more language is this - sometimes parents will respond for their kids before letting them struggle a bit to speak. Wait for them to reply to questions. Ask open ended questions. And positively reinforce his attempts to communicate. He may be a perfectionist and doesn't want to speak unless it's perfect. Or, he's a boy and is simply taking a bit longer... I've got 2 sons. They developed very differently than my nieces.
