Family cars are an important part of the collector car hobby and this 1963 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport convertible is the epitome of family cars. The STORY of the car, the memories and the milestones far outweighs monetary value. The car survived its owner serving in Vietnam, the new car blues in the early '70s, marriage a few years later, three kids after that, college educations, and so on. Through thick and thin, this car remained part of the Berry family. Follow along as we tell the story of "Ol' Blue" a very special 1963 Impala SS.

Wow what a awesome story. I own a 63 Impala 2 door H/top, only had it 9 years, but it was my dream car when i was a kid, it took my a long time to have the money for one, and being in Australia meant i had to look in USA for my dream car when i had the money, it took me 5 years of constant searching. I wanted a original 63 , that was hard to find. But i found one, it has its original 327. And shes not just a old Chevy to me, shes my baby, my daughter would play in it when she was little. So yes i understand your story with your 63. Fantastic story thank you for sharing .

That car is like my wife's dads truck is to him and his family. It is a 1977 Ford f100 302 4v automatic with around 80,000 miles with the original blue Ford paint and rims. He bought it new in Chattanooga,Tn and drove it as a daily untill around 2014 he bought him a new SUV for going to town and running earns. It's a yard truck on the farm and just drives it every now then. My wife learn how to drive in that old truck and took her test aswell to get her driver's license. Good video enjoyed the story.

Thanks Jeff, the sad part is that every old car has a story, but when they get sold and re-sold several times, the story just fades away. Luckily, this one remained and it's still making memories.

You know that trap of selling what you have to get out of a bad situation only makes things worse. Keep what you have and you don't have as far to get back there. 😄 thanks for taking care of people's memories and keeping them alive.

Love this story. Hit close to me. I bough my sky blue 63 biscayne 2 door sedan when I was 19 in 89’. I was in college cruising it in the fall of 91’ there when I met my wife. We drove that car to petite jean mountain in 92’ where we were married. It ended up being my daily when I went back to college in 97’. I would take my daughter (about 4 at the time) to preschool nearby the college. Sadly I had it stored at a friends property and it was taken and sold when the property was being cleared by a company that rented the property around 2009. However we all have the memories of driving/riding in that wonderful driver that are priceless.

I'm going to make a short comment and leave it at that. My Big Brother bought a 1963 SS Convertible Identical to 'Ol Blue', his came with the 409/425 4 spd. I tried to keep up with him so, I bought one, mine was all white with Red Interior with a 409/425 4 spd. with a 4.11 rear end, you described his car and mine to a "T", lots and lots of breakdowns, He got rid of his before I got rid of mine but I still miss it but, only in between Breakdowns.

Beautiful car! Thanks for sharing! My mom had a 1962 Bel Air that looks very much like the Impala it was her first car as a teenager in the 60s. I think she bought it in 64 or 65, I can't remember. Drove it for a few years, then bought her first new car, a 1968 Cougar after her and my dad got married in 1967. I've always been an Impala fan myself, I can definitely appreciate his 63! 😎

In 1966 mom lost her mother ..she inherited her 1963 impala 4 door ( choc. Brown ) it also had the 283 in it .. unfortunately in 1970 or 71 my oldest brother .. showing off to his girl friend racing , wrapped a telephone pole around the car..thankfully nobody was seriously injured or even worse killed. ...

Great story about your Father In Law. Mine is very similar, also about a 63 Impala SS. My parents bought "Gladys" when I was a baby. It was my parents daily driver. When I was 8yrs old, I remember to this day (many years later) my Dad telling me that "Gladys" would be passed down to me when I turned 16. Gladys was restored starting in 2009, a little bit here, a little bit there. In 2013, Gladys was back on the road. As with your Father In Law, Gladys is a part of my family and will be passed down when I'm no longer driving.

Thank you for your stories. I enjoy them very much. But this one I can relate to. In December of 1962 I purchased a 63 Super Sport hardtop. I was eighteen. Six months later we used the car in our wedding. In 1964 our son got to ride home in the SS. Just like you said my wife held him in her lap on the way home from the hospital. In 66 I just had to have the new SS396 Chevelle. We said goodbye to the 63.That was the last two new cars I ever purchased. I was in the collision business so I purchased wreck muscle cars of all types. I own a lot of them and I kept them all stock. I wish I had some of them back. Now at age 77 I'm still a gear head.

You would get a kick out of the car I have now. Its a 1936 Ford Model 68 sedan. My grandfather bought the car for $300 in 1978 from a widow at an estate sale at an old house, and he restored it and it took him until about 1983. It needed a full restore. My grandfather had his own body shop and he redid that car. He had it out driving places locally. He would drive it up to the lake. My grandfather was a Ford guy and he loved the 30s Fords. The car was in 2 movies, was in parades, and everyone in my family knew the car well. I have pictures of the car back then and documentation on it. It was my grandfathers pride and joy. In 1990, but his wife(my step grandma) had gotten bad health issues and he had to sell it. It has been gone from our family for 30 years. It was sold in 1990, before I was born in 1992. I knew the story on the car, saw the pictures and everything. I knew someday I had to find this car again because I wanted to see it and my grandfather had seen it when I was little and the guy that had it didn't want to sell it. When he did decide to sell it, he wanted a steep price and my grandfather was unable to afford it. My grandfather has since passed away in 2012 at the age of 96. He never stopped thinking about the car. While me and my mother and aunt were going through his possessions and handling his estate, I ran across some old tax receipts for the 1936 Ford, and it had the vin number on it! I had not had a vin number to the car before and just knew what the car looked like through old pictures. I would search online for the car every now and then and nothing would come up of it. Suddenly one day in 2016, I saw the car online and it was the same car and I contacted the guy who had it and he confirmed the vin. I wanted to look at it and maybe me and my mother and aunt could get pictures with it, but the guy wasn't really having any of it. He just wanted to sell the car, and it was for more than what we could afford anyway. I had tried to get in contact again with the guy, but he had since sold the car and the trail went cold again. Then again this year in February 2020, the car appeared back online and for an affordable price! It was down in Florida and the guy selling it was much like the other guy, didn't seem all that enthusiastic when I told him the story on it. I even brought down some pictures, but he didn't really care as long as he was getting payed for it. So I basically payed the guy and I was overcome with joy that the car was coming back home again after 30 years and was back in the family again. The vin on the car matched the one on the tax receipt from 1988( I had multiple tax receipts with the vin on it throughout the late 70s- late 80s for it). I brought the car back home to SC, and it has been in my barn since then. It is back in the very barn that it was housed in 30-40 years ago. It still has my grandfathers writing on the door jam service sticker! Underneath the carpet, I noticed was linoleum, the very same linoleum that was in his house! I guess he had lined the floor pans with it to create a padding underneath it like we do these days with the thermo-tec padding, lol. I still have the body tools, files, and everything that was used on the car. I also have the original lights, trim rings, and other misc pieces that were on the car. I even have the license plate that was on the car from back in the day. It is a cherished piece of my family's history. It currently doesn't run and it needs engine work, and I'm working on trying to find the right people that can help me get it going again. It has an old patch on the block where it was cracked that's leaking again and it has no spark. The car overall is in nice shape with a few rust bubbles but that's it. I will be uploading some videos of it onto my channel in the near future. If you would like to see it @Hot Rod Hoarder, I can email you some pictures of it and all. You might be interested in doing a story on it.
