8:00 It's not unlucky. It's bad QA/QC. You are not a high volume company, you don't sell ten's of thousands of units a week. It's not that hard to check and make sure everything is properly seated and connected before shipping.

For the modular cables, they should go to the customer in case they wish to upgrade, and because they belong to the customer. Every other SI give the customer those cables. Whoever at Starforge decided they should keep them probably should be given a talking to. If they try to use those cables in another PSU, especially a different model, at best, they kill the PSU, at worst, they take the entire PC with it.

It's for users that don't know anything about pcs, people that don't know what goes into one or know how compatabilitys work between different generations of pc parts. They just want a pc that works. Considering that this market is aimed toward people that have never built a PC, don’t know how to install drivers nor what are the best configs for their budget, the premium is more than fair. Btw, I’m an experienced PC builder and my last build took 3-4 hours with getting Windows to boot and programs installed, cables tidied up, etc. Heck, my first build took half a day to boot up. This is a hobby that takes many years to get to a point where you’re at Linus’ skill and knowledge level.
@smososoms
@smososoms 2 года назад
the thing is, the cables are a part of the PSU when you buy it. So, if we are paying for the parts (along with your building prices and other markups), we should be receiving all of them. We get to decide what we want to do with those parts. The SI should not be making that decision on our behalf. Also, there comes another question of cable compatibility. Plugging in the wrong cable in the PSU, even one that looks identical to the original cable, can sometimes cause the whole PSU to short, or even worse, cause a power surge to the actual PC components bricking them forever, which is a very costly thing to just forgive. Please include the cables, and let the customer figure out what to do with them.
@boburanus69
@boburanus69 2 года назад
Gonna go ahead and recommend you build your own PC if you want to get the most value for your money. In this case, getting all the stuff you pay for isn't gonna be straightforward. They might be getting retail boxes for PSUs or they may not be. They might be ordering only the specific cables they need with the extras not even being provided, like they would to a consumer buying a retail packaged PSU. One can't always assume things function the same for everyone. If I was an SI I'd be making a deal with PSU vendor to bring that cost as low as possible, which would include not having them send extra cables (saves them on production for me, since batch-style is likely how things will be done anyway). I could be wrong, they could be getting them off the shelf at Best Buy, but if they are running a business trying to sell prebuilt computers, I doubt it.

@@boburanus69 cope i paid for the fucking cables give me the cables. for 3500 dollars why are they skimping out on a 10c part(this cheap because its in bulk) makes you wonder what else they are skimping out on..
@smososoms
@smososoms 2 года назад
@@boburanus69 See, the thing is, whenever and SI orders a PC component(s), they get the same component(s) that as the retail model, there are no separate "packaging" for SI. This is because of the point I already made in my comment above. CABLES are MATCHED to the PSU. If you wanted to have external cables, sure, you can do them, but that takes a lot more effort on the end user's side to make sure of the compatibility, effort which could have been EASILY saved had the SI included the cables. If the end user already knows about such compatibilities, they will not go to an SI to buy a pre-built PC. The cables come in the box, regardless of whether you are a normal individual ordering the parts, or having an SI do it on your behalf (including the rest of the build).
@boburanus69
@boburanus69 2 года назад
Let's assume for a moment they really do build every PC from retail boxed parts. This means they aren't getting as good a deal on parts. This means they are going to be less profitable. Any time you want to have a conversation about what a company does or how process works, you need to switch your brain to think in terms of 'scale.' What you're saying would make sense if they only built one PC. But they are building PCs in quantity for resale... for profit. It makes more sense not to order extra packaging/accessories in the first place. Those things cost money, and at scale, can be profits down the drain for what amounts to: ewaste. All PC manufacturers and SI have a mission to be profitable. That only happens if they aren't doing this the way an end user would do it themselves. Thinking about it from a retail perspective is entirely the wrong way. I promise you they would never ever pay retail pricing, and would do whatever it takes to avoid that (including not getting extra cables with your PSU). If I'm wrong, these guys won't last long. Unless no one is getting paid to build these, they have already eaten their margins by the time the PC is built.
@smososoms
@smososoms 2 года назад
@@boburanus69 so, basically, Puget Systems, Origin PC, iBuyPower, MainGear, etc should have all gone bankrupt according to what you are saying. They never skimp on such a small detail. Even Linus was confused as to why they would keep the cables for themselves. As for the retail prices, I'm pretty sure the SI will rarely pay the retail price of the unit. They buy in bulk, so naturally, they should be getting a discounted price. (I am not sure if this is true, feel free to enlighten me). As for the inclusion of cables, they are a part of PSU. They will be included in the box, no matter who is buying them. What are the SI going to do with collecting all the "unused" cables that come included with the PSU? I got a modular powersupply, I've saved the cables throughout the years, needed them for adding drives, and upgrading my gpu a few years later. If today I went and bought a Pre--built, I'd want all the extra parts I would have gotten if I'd bought all the components and built it myself.

In regards to those PSU cables, they are matched to the brand+model of the PSU. They may seem modular but even within the same manufacturer they may not be truly compatible because there is no standard on the PSU side of the house. Just because the cables fit, it does not necessarily mean they are wired the same way. If you use the wrong cables, you could potentially be swapping pins and sending power to ground or vice versa and before you know it, your graphics card or whatever device you have connected to could be fried/bricked or worse. Very dangerous. This is why when you buy custom cables from CableMod they have you pick out the brand and model of the PSU because it is THAT important. If you pick the wrong one.... ooof... it will not end well for you my friend. :-/

The important thing about cables from the power supply too is that modular power supplies don't always use the same cable/PSU interface. If you fail to include a PCIe courtesy cable for a customer's future GPU upgrade, it's not as simple as going to amazon and buying the cable you're missing. @jcm2606
@jcm2606 Год назад
It's more than that. Modular power supplies don't have any standards for which pins on the power supply's end perform which roles (ie sending 3V/5V/12V power, acting as a ground, acting as a signal, etc), so you very often *need* the specific cables that came with the power supply since those cables were specifically designed for that power supply's pin layout, else you risk accidentally sending 12V power down a line meant for 3V power or ground and frying whatever the cable is connected to. There's a very real chance that the local builder might not even have spare cables for that particular power supply, which forces the user to try to buy them online and potentially get the wrong cables.

The problem re: modular cables is that you can't just easily buy more cables, since they're specific to the PSU. If you plug the cables from one PSU into a different PSU, you could fry your PC. As for needing them, a hard drive upgrade isn't a very hard thing to do. You could easily see someone not comfortable building a PC be willing to screw and plug in a hard drive.
@volundrfrey896

And as for upgrading, even if you're not comfortable doing anything yourself just having the cables gives you the option to pay your local computer shop a small fee to install a new hard drive for you. Linus is always going to be skeptical just because building your own PC is always significantly cheaper. But by the end of his review, it was actually glowingly positive. I think he was completely fair, and he basically said that it's one of the best pre-built PC you can get at the price range (especially when factoring in the custom elements + the warranty + if you are a fan of the streamers). Basically, pre-built computers will always be dinged for their pricing. Just is what it is. But the reality is, most mainstream consumers are not going to learn how to build a PC, or won't put the time in to do it. So it's not a bad option. Considering how many pre-built stuff gets destroyed by Linus (rightfully so), I think OTK should be proud.

You misunderstand EU warranty laws. - Warranty is optional given by manufacturer or seller of the product, it is OPTIONAL. - By law you have right for minimum 2 year legal guarantee against faulty products, it's not same as warranty and is much more restrictive than what warranty usually is, example legal protection does not cover professional use, for resale or purchase from another consumer (manufacturer or original sellers legal guarantee and warranty (if any) will transfer to new buyer if that consumer gets receipt from seller). - Warranty cannot be less favorable than each countries legal guarantee and must be transferable when consumer sells it to 3rd party long as its consumer buyer and not company. - If product has any defects, RMA must be FREE to consumer, any shipping costs must be paid back to consumer.

I know I’m months late but I just wanted to explain some of the things Linus mentioned… The cables not being plugged in securely is a pretty serious issue. It might’ve not affected anything in this build, but it’s indicative of other issues that can arise with this level of QC. For example, if a machine came with a RAM stick that wasn’t seated quite properly, the machine wouldn’t boot at all. It’s a simple fix of pushing the ram stick in, but someone who’s not knowledgeable about computers would have no clue what to do, and the machine would be a $3500 paper weight until customer service diagnoses the problem. The lack of spare power supply cables is serious too. Modular PSUs come with spare cables that enable someone to add accessories like another hard drive, RGB lights, GPUs that need more power, etc. They come in the same box as the PSU and are brand specific. If you buy cables later on that aren’t built for your exact model of PSU, then you’ll completely destroy the PSU. Those spare cables are extremely important. I know you aren’t directly managing the company, but your name and reputation are tied to it. You should reach out to the people running it and bring up the issues that Linus found. None of the issues he brought up are minor.

The builder should double check their own work, then another builder should QC and sign off on it also checking the invoice matches the build. 9:14 Na, u buy a prebuilt pc to get into pc gaming usually, a lot of people that get a pc built for them are originally pc illiterate and then start learning and wanting to upgrade. My cousin doesn’t even have a debit card cause he’s so technology illiterate but I built him a pc and now he knows every part on his pc. Also for a pc that could last 10 years excluding a part that maybe nice to have down the line just tell them to start throwing in the extra cables in the accessories box they already come wrapped up not like they will be loose cables.

Love that you put he reviewed OUR pc's. Seen a couple other put Linus reviewed their pc's like they're the only ones who own the company lol.

To be clear for a Linus review compared to other builders that was pretty good. They're quite brutal (rightfully) so on these reviews and those minor issues are actually a pretty good outcome. If you haven't you should watch other reviews from them of prebuilt machines and there are some serious shenanigans out there lol.

07:55 Big fan of Soda but this has to be his worst take I have ever hear. Thats not at all the case lol You should run to your company and fucking shout to some people for this trash work. Both on those sockets where loose. You can mess everything up(shorts, things not working, things working but with problems, etc) with that mistake. And it was the most simple thing to do to plug the easy connector the right way

for modular PSUs, the customer paid for the PSU with a full set of cables. They should all be provided in case they want to upgrade in the future. Plus if the AIO fails (and they do fail), some of them are not powered by mainboard headers alone, or mainboard header + SATA power. Some are powered by 4-pin Molex. None of those cables were included in this package when they would have been included with the PSU. Also the mainboard likely came with 4 SATA cables, none of the extras were in the box. I am sure there wasnt 4 SATA devices in the system. Another thing probably more important than anything else, LGA CPU sockets come with a socket protector on them. That protector must be reinstalled if the CPU is removed for any reason otherwise the mainboard instantly voids its warranty. When I build a system, regardless of who its going to, I provide the accessories box including the CPU clamshell or CPU box with clamshell and original cooler if the CPU came with a boxed cooler. I also provide the socket protector for the mainboard in the box along with all additional accessories that came with the mainboard and PSU (cables and whatnot). The way I see it, the customer paid for all that extra stuff, they should get it in the package.

About the power supply cables not being included, different brands of power supplies use different cables, they are some what proprietary for each power supply. An EVGA cable will not work with a Corsair power supply, so yeah every power supply cable should be included with the pc bought, period.

That pricing is ridiculous. I built a Ryzen 7700x, MSI B650 pro wifi, RTX 4080, 32gb ddr5 6000 ram, 1tb Samsung Evo 8 pro m.2, Asus Thor 850 platinum for $2300.

Bruh, selling PCs with knowing your better than HP and Dell is a great start for Starforge.

linus was too soft, i went and alterred a few configs on ibp, since every config costs a different amount based on the (starting config) and if you choose the right starter config and add in the specs manually at checkout, ibp would actually build that pc for 2950 dollars, which is significantly cheaper than this. however, the fact that you actually have to manually config an ibp pc using the CORRECT template to get this price is kind of frustrating in itself.

I think you're wrong on the PSU / cables front. If a person has bought a PC, and that PC has a modular power supply as standard, than irrespective of whether or not the customer actually uses them, those cables are their property because they paid for the PSU. They should be included. Indeed, depending on the jurisdiction in terms of the law, not including those cables may actually be classified as illegal, on the basis of the fact that the person has bought and paid for that PSU, and that PSU was supplied with those cables by the manufacturer. So definately something that starforge need to make sure they are doing, namely putting the extra cables in the accessory box, because the minute that PSU was installed in that PC for the customer and that PC was shipped, those cables became the property of the customer, not starforge.

It's like getting your music reviewed by Fantano. You'll take the 6/10 cuz ur expecting the outcome to be so much worse. For a company only recently started and basically its first product I think this was a good outcome. It might be enough goodwill to last them the opening years when they can start becoming an actual force in the marketspace.

How would you feel if you bought something, whatever it may be, and accessories, in this case, quite crucial accessories, that *does* come with it in the box, but didn't come with it? I'd be surprised if you were ok with it and didn't say anything.
