I was brought up with classical music and I am so grateful my father made me learn about it because it has made me appreciate music even more. I could suggest so much from many composers but it would be thousands of pieces. If you are interested in him as a person you should watch the movie My Imortal beloved. It's not totally historically accurate but it will give you a better understanding of him and his genius. He was a tortured soul. He didn't loss his hearing until later on life.

Speaking of Classical music, YES opened their concerts with the last several minutes of 'The Firebird Suite' by 'Stravinsky'. The entire piece is over 40 minutes in length. They played the part that's the most exciting, and then they'd all walk out onto the stage to the cheers of the audience, and the moment The Firebird Suite ended, they'd go right into their opening number, which often was 'Siberian Khatru'.

Classical music still reigns supreme. In Japan, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is played at New Year’s, all over the country, an annual tradition. The story goes (questionable) that when Sony introduced the Compact Disc format in the 80s, they used the Ninth Symphony’s length as the standard for the CD, roughly 75 minutes.

Wow, great to see you dive into classical music & what a place to start. The King himself! Man, this is one helluva rabbit hole. I became obsessed with his music 40 years ago in my 20's & still adore it. He wrote 32 piano sonatas, 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, an opera 'Fidelio' & many other amazing works. He began going deaf when he wrote his ground breaking 3rd Symphony 'Eroica' which heralded the romantic movement in classical music. By the time he wrote his monumental masterwork the 9th Symphony he was completely deaf, such was his genius. I could ramble on for hours. The greatest of his works IMO are the Moonlight, Appassionata, Waldstein, Hammerklavier & Pathetique piano sonatas, the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th & 9th symphonies, his violin concerto in D major, the 4th & 5th piano concertos, his opera Fidelio and his mass in D major The Missa Solemnis. Enjoy the journey!

A few other favourites are "The Choral fantasy" & "Leonore 3" & "Coriolan" overtures. Best wishes

Great selection! To those I would add his 8th Symphony (for it’s sense of humor), Fur Elise, Piano Sonata No.32 (for it’s surprising 2nd movement that sounds like the precursor to Ragtime music), and (as others here mentioned) The Egmont Overture. I also rather like his 4th Symphony, which I feel doesn’t usually get the kind of attention that it deserves.

The piece was written in 1802-1803. Some musicologists speculate that the piece was partially a reaction to his encroaching deafness, which started in his mid 20's. By the time Beethoven was 50 years old, he was clinically deaf, but also wrote some of the greatest pieces of all time during that time.

Excellent. Talking about classical piano pieces that are amazing you might look into List's second Hungarian Rhapsody. Franz Liszt was the "Pop Star" on the piano, in his day, If this piece sounds somewhat familiar to you, it might be because they used this music in a lot of the cartoons from the various studios, Back to Beethoven. He started going deaf in an irreversible process in his thirties, His famous last symphony was composed in total deafness. I believe he heard every note, in his head. I heard a girl on you tube tackle this particular work, The Moonlight,, the fast movement, on a electric guitar.. She's quite good.

This is an interesting diversion from you Pope - didn't see this coming! As always, you're respectful of the piece and your enthusiasm shines through. May I suggest another interesting diversion would be reactions to some Hans Zimmer - lots of fold using the Prague concert and it doesn't seem to get blocked. Interstellar would be a great place to start! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6iEXJ1FK4R8.html

Let me tell you brother when you get to the 9th Symphony that's one he wrote when he was deaf so everything you thought of had to come from his mind and he knew how to get it down on paper how to get play the notes that needed to be played to make some music work that it had to be just like what it was in his head because he couldn't hear it and it was the most amazing music ever written performed or recorded yeah it's a pretty long Symphony it's like two vinyl discs I'll get back to you on the best performance the best recording of it is on Deutsch gramophone I know I know his last name is Carla John Google didn't get that right anyway I'll get back to you on that okay it's Herbert von karajan his performances the best if you really wanted to do that you should probably do like all the movements just do it like the record since it's two discs you got four sides so I would say do four reactions believe me my man you would be totally freaked out about how great that music is it is transcendent beyond anything you've ever heard I swear you just have to trust me on this one okay hombre I'll check you on the flip flop

In my ears this version sounds very mechanical. There are much better vesions available. My favorite Beethoven pianist is Friedrich Gulda, an Austrian pianist who was also in Jazz. And I think that makes him a great Beethoven player because Ludwig van was a person who smashed borders in music. And therefore I believe it takes a person who does not accept the borders of genres as well to get the best out of Beethoven's music. Without doubt the player of this version hit the right keys at the right time but there is something lacking in it. Not enough smoothness in the 1st movement and not enough wilderness in the 3rd. Gulda worked out these differences much better in my opinion.

It took me decades to realize that classical is the most powerful music. The problem is that there is a lot of genuinely boring classical music. You have to be selective. I tend to find symphonies a little bloated and dull, and prefer smaller ensemble compositions. I have also come to consider Johann Sebastian Bach to be the greatest musical genius in all of history, and consider Bach a good starting place. If you want to hear something really stunning, listen to Mahler's "Adagietto," (it's really a movement from a symphony).

You would certainly enjoy J.S. Bach's "Fugue in G-minor BWV 578" (3m51s), for example played by Charlie Brusquini on a church organ in Sweden 👍: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZdCuA7SbzaM.html
