1:24:55 for those who might not know, it didn’t matter whether Paul had the removal spell, since Steer Clear has an “at cast” clause, so it would’ve always dealt 4 damage here
LOL had me crackn up when you got tilted and started hopeing for timeouts and disconects. Gotta say been there before. Love the content and keep'm coming sir.
First two games were nuts. 5 different 6 mana spells in a row. Crazy. Nice comeback though. U/B without ravens and campaign have been almost impossible to close for me. See you tomorrow.
I found UB crimes to be one of the best performing archetypes in the set, however, it can suffer from closing out. I've found 2 ways to do so effectively. Deepmuck Desparado plus Desperate Bloodseeker, mill for 5 every cast of the Bloodseeker, the more Bloodseekers and Desperados the better. Then into flyers, Sphinx if you can get them, Djinns also do work in end game. Int Campaign and card draw so you don't run out of gas. Obvs the more big rares and uncommons the better.
I've found Raven of Fell Omens to be critical in closing out games as UB (especially without Intimidation Campaign, but if Intimidation Campaign is your only real wincon you'll deck yourself in the mirror pretty often :/). Especially against the grindy GB and WB decks, the life total pressure of a flier + draining them helps stabilize and finish the game. (Of course they can remove it but then they're removing your 2 mana common instead of something else.)
"my opponents are playing 5-5-5-5-5 mana bases, why can't i do it?" this is funny, it reminds me of playing poker and watching opponents call down with flush draws and hit.
Nice job scraping it out! Was wondering if you are able to mark out the drafting, deckbuilding, and matches out on the video. Loving the content paul and honestly I am super excited for MH3 to come out to see how you approach things there
alot of your first few matches has been most of my experience this format which has really been discouraging tbh... a few 6-7 wins followed by back to back 0-3s really sucks
30:25 is what really does my head in about this format. Not only did they give green the best creatures by far, they gave them premium protection, at common.
I really feel those frustrations in the first few games. Drafting this set is a pretty rough go. So many times I feel like my deck is pretty good, even great, just for me to go 0/3-1/3 losing to bomb after bomb. Feels even more luck based than usual.
Probably because it’s bomb reliant, most of the commons/uncommons aren’t the most exciting reanimate targets outside of the obvious green core set. Also it definitely requires you to have a bit of mill in your deck. Reanimate is best played early and with a relevant etb, and it’s hard to line both of those up in the draft.
@haumph it may not be a bomb but surprise over reanimate is wild. They do basically the same thing but surprise has all the down side other then the 1/1
In a deck with that much cheap removal to slow the opponent down, I think Fbltbh would have been insane. I pick it quite highly and it almost never disappoints.
Late comment here as I’m just getting to this draft video, but taking Mourners Surprise over Reanimate is surprising, especially when you are basically mono removal with barely any creatures that are worth buying back. Reanimate would at least add a pseudo threat to your deck as you can target your Opponents GY (which is a crime as a bonus)! Anyways, love these videos and thanks for doing them!
Little bit of poetics here, but the land mill turn 2 vs sierkovitz may not have been totally random. In a podcast on lr or lol, sierkovitz suggested that the hand smoother increases the likelihood of hitting land 3 by turn 3 and may take the first few cards on top of the library into account.
Sierkovitz @Sierkovitz · May 14, 2020 What the data suggests (but not proves) the smoothing algorithm works also post-mulligan so not only initial hand is smoothed, which adds additional consistency. If you play BO1 a lot - definitely take those properties into account to maximise your win rate. 7/x
1:07:40 I know you're usually supposed to block first, then play your tricks. But wouldn't it have been better to play Desert's Due on the 5/5 before blocking to see if they topdecked Snakeskin Veil, so you wouldn't have lost your Drake in that case? As it played out, playing DD before blocks would've been better because then the Mercenary token could have blocked if they played Mystical Tether on the Drake before blockers.
don't know how you're supposed to win the draw-go mirror @33:47, without Misinformation Campaign. hope for Bandit's Haul in the next 10 cards?? rough match for a rough deck
I think this deck would have been significantly better with just a single intimidation campaign to help close things out. Not that you had any control over that but it feels like a pretty important piece for my best performing UB crime decks.
