Monster Train is a roguelite deckbuilder that is clearly inspired by games like Slay the Spire but also puts its own spin on the formula, including spawning minions and an emphasis on positioning. It's one of the year's most enjoyable roguelites so far so I decided to play some more of it. Check it out!

About this game:

The Armageddon cards (kill non-boss unit, etc.) should be held until later. You will get upgraded versions and the card you picked becomes Consume instead of Purge.

It seems to be a recurring suggestion that NL keep those event cards, but imo, unless you're trying to get the gold border for them, they're almost never worth keeping because his deck had a tight synergy with cycling cards. It needed to be lean, and honestly, "killing one unit" wasn't going to do anything to change that math.

@@Naturalrice It can vary a lot. These kinds of decks can sometimes find themselves in a situation where they're great at killing bosses but have trouble with units that have 160 or so HP. Having the ability to kill a unit once per battle can save you a lot of pyre HP. It all depends on the needs of the deck.

@@Naturalrice depends on your deck. Using the Heavenly Shield to stack up a godawful amount of damage shields (especially in Umbra with their already existing damage shield cards), or the sword to stack up a crapload of attack on a multistrike unit (Animus of Will anyone?) can be insanely good. The skull, IMO, is the worse of the 3. It's really only good for saving your pyre a little damage if your third floor sucks, or something. Also worth noting that the Artifact you get after holding the Armageddon weapons removes Purge from ALL cards so it actually combos with other events. For example the one that gives you a really powerful spell but adds purge? Now it consumes instead. The X spell from the Historian that gives you 3X gold? Now it's once per battle. If you get it early it's pretty cool actually cuz then you can go hard on events and try for more purge cards.

Yo NL I'm so glad you've come to realize the greatness of some cards, only one comment I can really give. That Gorge unit that does AOE damage is best on the bottom floor usually, because he's tanky, heals from gorging, and can take out the small creatures in the back so they don't make life harder for your upper floors. Loving the series though, thank you for providing consistent content for us.

Yep I was going to say the same thing. Typically you want your trample unit to finish off any of the stragglers and to use the shadoweater/aoe in general on the bottom floor to prevent the more high damage backline units from make it up the floors. Also why quick is so powerful on sweep units as it prevents so much of the incoming damage.

@@Nibas Almost. I think Incant floor is good in the middle so Frostbite has an extra turn to do something. Champion on top though would've made the run much less stressful.

It's kinda hard not to use the purge card as soon as you need to tho. NL has to know beforehand that the purge becomes a consume if he waits.

I'm gonna write this comment again because it's probably going to keep happening. If you have lifesteal, don't stack damage shield unless the unit will die without it, and vice versa. They are anti-synergies in almost every case. This is especially important in where you place your morsels which give those two effects.

I just did a run where I took the shield and gave it double stack plus I had the x+3 trinket. So every boss after that died on the first floor.

Personally, I prefer my incant floor on the bottom since it often is where I'm killing weak units before they attack like with the titan's teeth. Also, if you holdover both the titan's tooth and the offering token, you will get them every single turn.

The event that gives you the choice of 3 cards that purge has a secret - if you keep the card without using it for several missions, you get a free artifact that turns all "purge" effects into "consume". On a different topic: lifesteal and damage shield are super inefficient together - unit takes no damage, but still loses a stack of lifesteal when attacking.

NL you gotta be careful when playing morsels with the spike trial turned on brother. Some morsels actually have an attack, so they die to spikes before ever getting consumed. You may be better off playing them in the top floor so they come in dazed and actually get eaten. Great video as always, keep up the good work!

Two compliments and two critiques: 1. Great deck build. Incant is always insane, even moreso with your starting relic. 2. Great job paying attention to Consume in the final fight. Things you could have done better: 1. Your floor layout is backwards. Shadow Eater should be at the bottom. He's nice and tanky, and takes out wimpy backliners before they become an issue. In the final fight you were letting the dudes that add scourges stay alive for 3 floors to junk up your deck. Meanwhile your initially wimpy champ should be at the top so he has time to scale and take out the big guys at the top. 2. Offering Monument offs himself after drawing 8 cards. This means you can play him, incant until he's exhausted, then play frost totem in its place.

Also 3 offering tokens with two of them being holdover is heavily overkill and combined with never taking draw meant that he was winning in spite of them rather than because of them. I blame the comments a few episodes ago for praising the token too hard

NL! You don't ALWAYS need your champion on the bottom floor! In my experience, the Gorger champion does well at the top with a morsel maker and he just eats for free and turns into kind of your own personal boss floor. For the Hellhorn champion with slay last game, it worked for you but I tend to keep that champion on the second floor so that way he gets easy slays on weakened enemies from the first floor. Hope that helps!

Hey NL, those Purge rewards from crystal caves. If you hold them long enough without using them you often get a second crystal event that removes the Purge affix.

Did NL really start thinking that the Shadoweater was actually an Overgorger? 1. Kept gorging it as if it has a persistent bonus (Which it doesn't.) 2. Played on the top floor even though it's practically a sweep unit. 3. 40:15 Gives it 3 energy morsels while saying "We...want you to melt". 4. Called it Overgorger twice, but egg does that to lots of stuff. Still POGGED about that win though, that really was on the razor's edge.

Trample 1 is honestly so good NL, gives your champion more starting dmg and hp which is where umbra struggle and when your champion has 100+ dmg, he will clear the entire first floor by himself. On that note, on the last boss you really need to focus them gilded birds which put trash in your deck and also not just discard the trash cards, that is why you almost lost at the end, drawing an entire turn of trash cards can be devastating. tip: life steal and fuel mechanics etc don't get used if your unit does not attack, so stacking life steal or fuel for example on a unit which won't attack until the boss can still be very useful as it will save up the charges and outlast any boss.

Fuel goes down by one every round, lifesteal goes down by one for every attack (so multistrike makes it go away faster). All that being said though, putting his champion on the top floor WAS the correct play especially after he picked shadoweater

NL I’m glad you’re growing on your play style on this game. With the 2 gorge twins it’s hands down Lifesteal is the best. Doing 40 damage doesn’t happen early on, you hit a unit shop and give him 45 HP and possibly a large stone and he never dies. The damage shield is still better than no gorger tho.

What a run! This is before Siren of the Sea got the huge buff on Incant from 1 Attack, 1 Max Hp to 2 Attack, 2 Max Hp. With your first relic that woul be a whopping +4 Attack + 4 Max Hp for each spell, basically a better Steel Enhancer for free which is bonkers. She really wants MultiStrike to go crazy.

@@diearschmeister 36:14 If you think Holdover on an Offering Token is useless after watching him reliably get off Titanstooth for free more times during the run than he would have even naturally drawn it, I dunno why. The second one was admittedly overkill, but the first one was incredible for him. (Plus, he didn't get the second Holdover one from a spell store in any case.) He had two Titanstooth in the deck, and the Offering Tokens let him cast *three of them in one turn*.

@@michaelleue7594 I agree that it is an amazing synergy upgrade and essential to some deck types, and picking it up on the offering token was good, but he routinely undervalues other spell upgrades that do nothing but improve his deck in favour of rerolling the spellshop indiscriminately looking for holdover and not considering anything else. Its just like when he talks about feeling bad for making the "cowardly" play of taking +25 health in the unit shop when it's arguably one of the best basic upgrades for many frontline units. Don't get me wrong, I think NL is decent at the game but he spends so much of his time convincing himself that the game is trying to mislead him into making bad or inefficient choices, when realistically the game in it's simplest form is a "play the cards you are dealt" kind of game.

The +3 health on all units is is actually pretty good because it potentially allows your morsels to survive spikes and sweeping attacks. Shadoweater should not be put on the top floor, their purpose is basically just to deliver lots of AOE to the bottom floor.

You can keep petrified skull (Just don´t use it). After like 3 battles it will be better and the purge will switch with consume. Found out today by accident. Then remove consume and make it cost 0 again, duplicate it and you got yourself a free win.

Finally beat the game at Covenant Rank 25. It basically takes a lot of luck, skill is almost of no importance for the majority of starting decks. I got a thingie that summons 4 minions on middle floor, got a consumer of crowns (100/40) made it big + 25 health (115/105 taking 5 slots), made 1+5 another copies and upgraded all of them with whatever I could find, and got rid of all other minions except one imp to reduce their cost to 7. All around 4th stage. I got ascend and a relic that saves unused mana before last boss so I could summon two more, one on each floor. It almost took no skill at all, which is funny. My middle floor was something like 125/110 • 110/115 • 125/100 • 125/115 • 115/125 on the last stage, with one of them having quick. Just needed two AOE spells to get rid of the fodder at the back.

Remember to focus on stacking your lifesteal and damage shield effects on two different units unless the lifesteal unit is about to die. Units lose lifesteal even when they're at full health (from being damage shielded) so it's a waste to put both on the same unit

Hey NL, if you keep the purge card you get at the crystal caverns until later in the game, you'll trigger an event that will give you an artifact that turns all purge cards into consume cards. I'm pretty sure the event works regardless to the card that you take.

Good video, but NL. The event where you get to choose between the Skull, Sword, or Shield, again, like many other events that reward you for holding things, gives you another event, that essentially upgrades those cards and any cards that purge. Just don't play those cards for ~2 battles. Also, the blacksmith is another good event that I'd like you to read the event text for, if you get it again. It does not make your deck any worse.

NL, keep in mind that some morsels do have an attack! You lost a lot of them to spikes, and you might have been able to math out some pyre damage as well by chipping away top floor enemies. Absolutely loving this series though and am saving up to buy this game soon :D

You're making a lot of big plays well in terms of deck construction, artifacts, etc., but I think you'd win a lot more games by doing the little things right. Like playing purge curses instead of discarding them to offering tokens or taking some time to check that the opponent has sweep so you dont send your morsels to their unnecessary deaths. Loving the content tho regardless!

NL sometimes letting the champ eat while doing a Gorge build can pay off in the long run like when fighting a boss. If a boss doesn't have sweep you can maybe sneak some extra damage in there which can tip the scales. Like getting a extra 24 damage is nice but the extra 8hp from the trigger will be gravy which turns that 24 damage into 48. Just some food for thought loving the videos and sorry if my English wasn't the greatest or if I sucked at explaining it love the content.

Small tip for you NL, in last fight it's always better to play Scourge cards with Purge instead of discarding them. You only should discard them if you can't play them.
