This song came out when I was a young 23-year-old, and now I'm 60. The lyrics "well I've wasted all my tears, wasted all of those years" resonate even more, especially when you have life's regrets... please try hard, and don't have regrets when you're 60.

I'm 63, and fell in love with this song when it came out when I was a young woman. It's beautiful yet heartbreaking. I always heard that "Red" wrote this from his personal experience, having been in a less than loving home & ran away. I will have to look that up now! I'm curious if that is accurate. Btw, I went thru lots of crap in my 20s but then found a good man, got married & had a daughter. She's 28 now & I've been married to her dad for 33 years. No regrets on those years at all!! Just wish I had better health, but you can't have it all!!

What’s even sadder when you read the story of his childhood, others mentioned that his mother left him and it was also difficult for him to be brought up just by his father who had a lot of issues too. He met up with his mother many years later just once I think. She said she had no regrets of letting him go! Can you imagine a mom saying something like this? You are just about to find out what it’s like to be a mom and you could never imagine doing this to your child!

I believe she contacted him and told him she had cancer and she was living in the US I believe, he flew out to see her only to discover it was all a lie. That was the end of their relationship. It was why he did not marry until 2010 . So sad but what an incredible gift he has and shares with us.

In `85 Simply Red (Mick Hucknall) was the first musician to bring soul music back to the fore. Back then nobody thought after punk music that there could ever be a revival of soul music. But Mick Hucknall did, and it hit like an earthquake. Thanks for sharing and best wishes@all from hamburg (germany)

As a kid, Hucknall was a northern soul boy. In the industrial north of England working class kids with nothing elevated towards rare soul American beats to dance to at, all nighters (helped by amphetamine). The band name came from his love of Manchester United; not his hair.

Simply Red is still making music today with their last album going to #6 on the British Charts. They've been much more successful in the UK and Europe with over 35 top 40 songs in the UK and 6 #1 Albums. Stars is the 11th biggest selling studio album of all time in the UK. Here are some suggestions. Holding Back the Years is from their 1st Album Picture Book. Listen to If you Don't know me By Now a remake of the Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes single that featured Teddy Pendergrass on vocals. It went to #1 in the US in 1989. . They are very hard to categorize as their music is a bit R&B, Jazz, Funk, Pop, and even a little Reggae. I'd suggest besides what I've mentioned Stars, For Your Babies, You've Got it, Angel featuring the Fugees Lauryn Hill from the movie Set it Off. Sad Old Red, The Live in Hamburg Video is great. Sunrise from 2003's Home which also had a remake of You Make me feel Brand New. ( He usually does a remake on every album, it's his way of paying tribute to the artists he loved growing up) Thrill Me (Funk) From 2019 I don't do Down or Thinking of you both Funk. If You like Reggae try Night Nurse.

It still amazes me to this day that people just assume that powerful/ soulful singers are black.... I'm just as guilty because growing up my mum would listen to Billy Ocean and I thought he was white until I saw the album cover. It warms my heart when their identities are revealed because it proves the point that deep down there is no differences between the people of this planet!! Thank you for reacting to this band, Mick had one of the best voices ever to sing a tune and I'm so pleased you enjoyed it.

I know what you mean. I'm Black, and i remember when my mom used to play Procol Harum (A Whiter Shade of Pale) and Timi Yuro back in the 60's, we thought they were both Black. Procol Harum was a British band, and Timi is American and part Italian. Timi had such a powerful, magnificent voice, one of my all time favorites to this day. My parents listened to anybody that they liked, Brenda Lee, Tom Jones, Dean Martin, Engelbert, it didn't matter, good music is good music, no matter who sings it. All of the above artists have stayed with me all these decades, and thank goodness for CD's instead of those old worn out snap crackle pop LP's. Listen to " Make The World Go Away" by Timi. RIP Ms. Timi Yuro and Dean Martin, and to Mom and Dad.❤

Thinking someone is black/white has nothing to do with how well or powerful they sing. Robert Plant has a powerful voice, but no one thinks he's black. It has to do with the timbre of each voice, and qualities within different timbres that are normally associated with black or white vocals.

It was also about the drug that fueled the all-nighters - and the identifying fashion. Like I said - a taste. It did however give birth to the dance-soul fusion of the late 70s-80s and from there, the Baggy sound, Madchester and so on.

Simply Red was great to hear. What a voice. Thank you. Maybe try stepping back another decade or so to 1969, Montreux Jazz Festival and check out Les McCann and Eddie Harris, Compared to What. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kCDMQqDUtv4.html This has been called, rightfully so, a gateway drug to Jazz.

The video begins in Whitby Abbey and St Mary Church and graveyard which was the location for Bram Stoker's novel Dracula.

Well actually he is... a very pale skinned, Jewish, Black, blue eyed, British singer with red hair with an absent, Irish mother... Just goes to show that 'soul' music simply comes from one's emotions, experiences and perhaps, to a lesser extent, from DNA... 😏

I've only just realised where the video was shot after watching a RU-vidrs documentary about the place a few days ago. It's Whitby.

Simply Red are a cool band their album Stars is a masterpiece check out the single 'Stars' if you like this I bet your mum also played 'Wet Wet Wet (Marty Pellow) He was the warm up for George Benson in the UK about 10 years ago. check out 'Love is all around' you might recognise it from the Kevin Costner film Robin Hood, Marty Pellow is as soulful as it gets, check out 'Angel Eyes' by Wet Wet Wet (silly name I know)

The video is filmed in Whitby England. Bram Stoker stayed there and was inspired by the ruined Abbey and beauty of the town to write his novel Dracula. In the book, Dracula landed on the beach of Whitby from a wrecked ship in the shape of a black dog.

Reminds me after so many years of listening to Hootie & the Blowfish. Bought their first 2 albums and seen one of their music videos on RU-vid about 10yrs ago. Somehow I thought Darius Rucker was white all these years.

Voices have no colours & why do most people try to stick made up labels on man & woman?Shallow minded idiots always try to divide all that’s good,Music Is Music.

My mother is European and listen to all motown and really good stuff, this was one of them, for me if there is soul in it,color do not matter, its bringing the pain in expression something in music we learned from black people, remember Elvis was raised with the black community😉its music evolution i got Manny respect for this, also music is universal language ❤

I love it when music unexpectedly shows you your incorrect mindset. Not to say Lex is racist or something, that's not what im saying at all, but it's funny what our minds say someone looks like based on the music they produce. I to have been guilty of believing a perfmorer is one race or another only to be proven wrong. It's a wide wolrd we live in and learning more about it every day is the spice of life. This was a fun video to watch.

I’m stunned to keep witnessing the young Reaction People’s shock to find out that the singers to which they are listening to for the first time are White? We grew up hearing and loving them because they were great not knowing what color they were? Kudos to your mama for her exquisite taste in music and elated that you are able to feel what your mother felt! Rock on. 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
