Freddie, I spent the spring and summer (2008) 40 miles from Flensburg. My friend lived in the countryside - 10 miles from the boarder of Denmark. Loved the long summer days. And I love those dormer windows! This brought back a lot of good memories of Germany!!

The joy on your face when you saw the snow for the first time put such a smile on my face! It reminded me of when I was teaching (in Canada) and I had a boy in my class who had moved here from Jamaica. When it started snowing for the first time that winter, we dropped everything we were doing and ran outside all together to help him celebrate and experience it for the first time. It was one of the highlights of my career because it brought so much joy to all of us to experience it with him.

It’s funny to hear Rodrigo say 0c is cold. Here in 🇨🇦 that’s warm in winter. We get -40c in winter with 30-40cm snow storms sometimes. It’s nice he’s enjoying the snow in Freddie’s hometown. I think Rod just got the travelling bug! 😉

I am giggling a bit at Rodrigo's reaction watching this from Calgary, Canada! It's currently -31 degrees Celsius here (feels like -44 C with wind chill), and everything is covered in a thick blanket of snow! If you are struggling with the cold in Germany, it will be a whole new experience for you to visit Canada during winter! And yes, the length of day changes drastically from summer to winter here, too. Just like Freddy said, the sun goes down around 4pm in the winter, but the summer days are so long and pleasant and the sun sets around 10-11pm.

Yep, no sunshine……that’s winter in Northern Europe. I grew up in Belgium, and every winter I suffered from seasonal depression. Now I live in New Mexico where the sun shines almost every day, and I actually don’t mind the rare cloudy days Rodrigo, you are such a wonderful human, enjoying the “little things” in life. About the Autobahn. I was stationed in Germany while in the military and lived there for 2 years. I drove the Autobahn. What nobody ever says, is that there are areas of no speed limit. Every time you hear about it, they say there is no speed limit. This is inaccurate. There are speed limit signs and they change according to the road. If there is a hill or a curve or an area of higher traffic, then there is a speed limit sign. There is also a NO Speed limit sign. So there are areas of no speed limit but it is not the whole Autobahn.

There is nothing more exciting than getting to be in another country on this wonderful planet. Enjoy every minute….life about making memories.

Germany is such a wonderful place. My mother's family all live near Hamburg in a small town named Barmstedt. I have fond memories of childhood vacations there. I hope you were able to see a hand specialist while you were there, Freddie. Gute Reise.

So very nice to visit Germany, I lived in Nuremberg, Germany for 2 years, I grew up in Southern California, so it was a big change for me, I was there from September ’69 - June ‘71. I traveled all over Germany and some of Great Britain and Austria before returning to So Cal.

Germany’s weather is much like Alaska in the northern hemisphere. Yeah, very little sunlight. It gets light around 10:00 am and gets dark around 4:00 pm…….and it’s COLD outside but we have a TON of snow. Our first snowfall in November was 40 inches with one storm.

That's quite poignant. I don't presume to guess your ancestry but if had some ancestors who came from Spain or other parts of Europe then THEY had ventured to the very different jungle environment in Panama than they had experienced to in Europe then stayed and had families of their in their new homeland ! BTW, the name 'Rodrigo' is the Spanish for the original German 'Hrodric' [fame- ruler]. Now I am missing breakfast in Germany. My parents are from Germany. They immigrated to Canada, My Dad's family is from the general area of Dusseldorf or close. It was the nearest big town. Mom is from Radolfzell um Bodensee. Now I am watching you eat all that yummy German cuisine. We never visited in the winter as we lived in Canada. Rodrigo I am thrilled that you had this experience. Ice skating may be your new sport. And I can tell you since living in Iowa, US, Snow gets old quickly lol. Your first snowman was adorable. My favorite thing about Germany, Europe in general, is the old architecture that is still standing. On my first trip in 1964, there was still a lot of evidence of bombing campaigns in WWII. I am from Colorado, USA, so not nearly as far south as Panama, but was still surprised how short the winter days were. The summer days are very long and much sunnier!!! I loved living in Germany!!!
