Matt worked his way through a nation-wide search for a new bass singer for Pentatonix - without knowing he was auditioning for PTX, who had been idols of his since he was a teen. There's a photo of Matt posing with Pentatonix at a concert of theirs that he attended.
In fact, that picture was the first concert Matt had ever gone to!!!! Then to join the band is a fairy tale come true. Yes we all miss Avi, but Matt is doing his own thing and plays to his strengths. And he has a great chemistry with the band.
Absolutely! He came in knowing he had a really tough act to follow (he was already a fan of Pentatonix), but I think he hit the ground running and has been a great fit.
Ya Matt will do LOL. Great story about Matt, when he showed up at the auditions for the new bass, he had the audition songs bass lines memorized, and all the songs they were going to do on tour, and all the songs they had released.....ya he got the job. "Prayers for This world" is crazy good.
Matt’s bass work on this one is highly underrated. He stands out so much to my ears, but so many reactors don’t acknowledge it. Thanks for doing so. Many ‘fans’ don’t give Matt the credit he deserves. He came into the group to replace a highly popular member. He’s not AVI, and never tried to be. He’s a great bass, and has made so many incredible contributions to the direction, energy, and overall showmanship of the band. Not to mention he’s been with PTX as long as Avi was at this point - yet he’s still referred to as the ‘new guy’. 😂❤. BTW, not sure if you’ve heard Kevin sing yet, but he has a beautiful tenor voice. When he joined the group, he had very little singing experience, and the group - Mitch especially - worked with him to develop his voice.
Actually Avi did more to help Kevin than Mitch did. They would work on his "training" at night after the group had stopped for the day. Because they lived together it was so easy for Avi to work with him. Not to mention Avi's prior training made him the perfect teaccher. I'm sure Mitch played a big role in helping Kevin, I'm not saying he didn't, but Avi had more time, and training.
I prefer Kevin's normal singing voice, it is very pretty. His falsetto is ok even if it can be a little harsh at times, I just don't know why he insist on going falsetto when he has such a beautiful tenor voice. If that is what the group agrees with, I won't complain, except every once in a while.
i just learned that Matt can really play drums. At the concert I was just at, Kevin was cello-boxing and Matt was right there on the drums. The absolutely best show I've ever seen.
Matt has such a warm, voice. He makes me think of curling up under a soft blanket with a purring cat and some really good chocolate. Yes, he sings. So does Avi, remember. If you want to hear an entire song that was arranged around Matt's voice, listen to "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." His range is greater now than it was then, but his voice has been Pentatonix quality from the beginning. Pentatonix isn't "most bands." Most bands have a bass guitarist; Pentatonix has Matt. For that matter, most bands have a drummer, and Pentatonix has Kevin. I'll take Matt and Kevin any day. Also, please note that even Kevin sings. Check out "Imagine." Or "Run To You." We don't hear him as often as we'd like because he's usually too busy being the entire percussion section, but he has a beautiful tenor voice. He raps, too - check out his solo in "Sing."
Referring to Kirstie's verse here and in Hallelujah, there is a significant difference. The Sound of Silence was recorded AFTER she spent a little time on Broadway (in "Kinky Boots") and got some training in how to project her voice Broadway Style. She could always carry her weight, but she just became better at what she does.
Excellent reaction...kid friendly...lol...close enough! My favorite verse from Kirstie is in Amazing Grace ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Obp-9BEZe1c.html
I love Matt's ability to sound like instruments. Synth, cello, guitar, he can imitate any of them. Try New Rules x Are You That Somebody, Coffee In Bed or You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch.
Lol, sometimes ladies just have to SWEAR.! For some examples of mind blowing Kirstie, check out Amazing Grace, The Prayer and Rather Be. There are many more, these three just happen to be my favorites.
If you want to hear Kirsty go off check out Amazing Grace. She has a part that starts low and I swear goes higher like 5 more times! It's insane the range she has.
This is my first time seeing your reaction I think and you’ve immediately earned a new subscriber. Love your highlight of Matt. If you want more Kirstie slaps, please watch Amazing Grace and The Prayer (everyone, highlights Mitch in The Prayer, and rightly so, but I think Kirstie also deserves her flowers for those notes she was hitting ❤)
I did enjoy your reaction, and hope you go into these reactions in whichever way is comfortable for you. Matt has been such a good fit with this group, and he has shown his vocal talents and his personality to be a boon to the group.
i Pentatonix never ceases to amaze me, at just how incredibly talented they are, and take their voices to newer levels, we have never heard before.....there is something so special about their ability, to tell the songs story, allowing us to listen with a new perspective, and hear & feel emotions, we may not have heard from the original artist 💖💖💖 Not only their voice, but their delivery is also their gift!
Hi very nice reaction ... Keep going ... Before you make up your mind, check out Kirstie and Matt in Prayers for this World, 90s Dance Medley, Amazing Grace and Can You Feel the Love Tonight. They all shine here and on the Lucky Ones CD, Mad World, When the Party's Over, the Evolution of Ariana Grande and New Rules X Are You that Somebody. Fabulous band (group)! I love how different members get to shine in different songs (whenever it's the best fit). P.S. unmasking of Pentatonix singing Creep on the Masked Singer - crazy vocals from Scott and Mitch -- great harmonies, including Kevin.
Avi is spectacular. Mitch is spectacular. Yet Mitch and Avi have totally different voices. It's less obvious with Matt, because he and Avi are both lyric basses, but Matt also is spectacular. And Matt also has a totally different voice than Avi (or, of course, Mitch). You're right that there's a tendency to compare, and too often that comparison turns into something like "Well, I like Matt, of course, but he's no Avi." It isn't Matt's job to be Avi; it's Matt's job to be Matt. Matt's strengths are different from Avi's strengths, and that doesn't mean that Matt is better than Avi or Avi is better than Matt. It means that they're different, exactly as they should be. And Pentatonix thrives on the diversity of its members, and has become expert at putting the strengths of all its members to the best use available. Everyone gets time in the spotlight; everyone gets a chance to shine. You've heard their original release of "Hallelujah," with Avi singing the second verse. When you get a chance, do a RU-vid search on "PTX Hallelujah 2023 live feed." That should get you several good recordings of "Hallelujah" from their current world tour. Matt will blow you away with the way he sings the second verse of "Hallelujah."
Enjoyed your reaction! I love Kirstie’s part on this too! My favorite Kirstie songs are Say Something, Amazing Grace and their original Water. They did a four song set in Japan back in 2016 (Popspring Concert-> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7GMHqYxpnzk.html) which includes originals Water, Cracked & Can’t Sleep Love and their Evolution of Michael Jackson medley. Produced by MTV so the audio is excellent. Highly recommend!
A lot of reactors miss the bass line drop that Matt does at the end of his verse. I appreciate that you were actually listening to all the nuances of the song. If you haven't done it already, I would love your reaction to Amazing Grace by them. Subscribing now.
Glad you highlighted Matt. I'm in the minority (I think) but I think the group sound is better with him than it was with Avi. Avi is amazing, particularly as a soloist. I just think Matt blends better as a group member. First time I've seen you! Great reaction! I'll be watching for more!
I'm pretty equal on who I like between Avi and Matt. Some songs like Hallelujah sound better wtih Avi, and there are others, but my brain isn't working right now. There are other songs that sound better with Matt, again brain dead. If you listen to Mary did you Know, and a couple other songs, Scott starts of, and then drops down to that bass/baritone border, and at some point Avi takes over from the same note, and if your eyes are closed you don't know when it happened, because they sounded identical. Matt's voice is too different from Scott's to do that. Which makes things better in it's own way. The contrast between Scott and Matt, can make great music happen. Although as much as I liked Avi with PTX, I do not like any of his solo stuff, for a variety of reasons. But that's me, and I am glad he is having the success he is, he has put in the hard work to get where he is.
@@Contridiction-vp3fv I can't say I'm 'equal' on both. I think Avi has a spectacular voice that is BETTER suited to solo work. When he was with PTX, I often felt like he was the dominant voice. Matt, on the other hand has a beautiful, velvety voice that is (my opinion) better suited to the perfect blend in both timbre and volume. I LOVE when Matt takes a solo, but I have to give Avi the solo crown. I think Avi's verse in Hallelujia is amazing. I think we MOSTLY agree... we love them both!! 😊
Matt is wonderful. Yes, Scott is well able to cover the bass lines, but then we don't have Scott the Rocker or Scott the Soulful Master of Riffs on lead! The group held tryouts for like 40 bass singers. Matt came to the session with the bass lines for everything they'd released already memorized! There's a recent short video called something like "Pentatonix Concert Confessionals 2" out there, and Matt reveals that Pentatonix was the first concert he'd ever attended as a teen - they held a workshop for a capella at his high school and he was hooked. Kirstin is going back to her roots (literally) on this one - she is Latina. Also, this video was shot by Kirstin's partner (father of her baby and now her fiance), Ben Hausdorff (usually goes by Hausdo online). ETA: The original of this was by folk rockers Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960s. It had a revival recently because of Disturbed's cover, and this Pentatonix version is definitely "in conversation" with that cover.
Great vid again, for sure still waiting on a reaction of their "The Prayer" cover, and you'll love the Amazing Grace cover as well if you liked this ;)
I believe the first concert Matt attended was for PTX. They had a nation wide try out to replace Avi. I saw Matt say that he was not even sure if the tryout was for PTX until he got there.
Matt COMPLETELY won me over with this performance. Since then, I’ve had to admit he fits better with the group. His voice is B E A U T I F U L. Like straight up silk n soul, it adds a warmth to their sound that they simply did not have before.
Great reaction as always, PTX actually covered Disturbeds’ version and upgraded it. Avi and Matt have the same amount of time with the band, but I think Matt has been here for their best music to date. The Prayer, Amazing Grace, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, My Favorite Things, along with Mad World, and now their new originals have the same musicianship if not more than the earlier material. Yes, Avi is the OG, but Matt has more than proven he belongs.
If you want to hear Kirstin's best performance, in my opinion anyway, you need to listen to "Seasons of Love" in which she is the featured singer. Most of the time Mitch hogs all the high-range parts but we get to hear Kirstin up there in this one. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qO01TIVX3SM.html
I love this performance but I'm still in shock of how they arranged this, because rent is Mitch's favorite musical 🤷🏿♀️. However I truly love seeing Kirstie shine 👍🏾😊
Since you're also such a big fan of Avi, you should definitely check out his song from his solo career "Change on the Rise". (Okay, and all his other songs too, but definitely that one.) Also, another song I think Kirstie does amazing in is "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". I've really been enjoying your reactions and I look forward to more!
Now watch Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence. BTW, the original was by Simon & Garfunkel in the 60s. The lyrics almost feel prophetic, and I believe Simon was 19ish when he wrote it. Give some of Avi's solo work a listen. My personal favorite is 'Change on the Rise'.
Kirstin looks very different in every video. I loved Avi, however Matt was a great replacement. Kevin sings like an angel too, just not as often. I love him in the video for 'Mary did you know?' Great song & he sings beautifully in it. Avi is also still with them for that one too..
This coming from someone that refuses to listen to VoicePlay because they suck, Geoff Castelucci has to be the best bass on the planet right now. He could do so much better. Again my opinion and I don't expect others to agree with me. I know it sounds like I'm being mean and ugly not my intention to be either, I just say what I'm thinking.
So much great stuff, Can’t Hold Us, Havana, late episodes of “The Sing Off”. But this is probably my fav after Wizard of Ahhhs, 90,s Dance Medley. Found here. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-57YEAEKKcOk.html
Matt is awesome but i miss Avi!😥 Only because my voice is closest to his than any other member (not even the same ballpark as far as voice quality let me be clear 🤣👍) but i enjoy singing his parts the most!😁👍 But i do absolutely LOVE Pentatonix!😍😊
