It means that the minimum term is 9 years before being considered for parole. Depending on his behaviour inside & what is on his sentence plan (courses, education, restorative justice visits, counseling etc) & if he completes it. His IEP status throughout the min term will all come to a decision if/when he goes before the board. So he could end up doing (for example) 15 years before his 1st hearing. And just say he did get parole he’d be released BUT would be on life license & he could be recalled at anytime if he didn’t go to probation appts, committed a crime, and whatever else is part of his license agreement. So technically, no it’s not a life sentence per say but he’ll always be under the authorities supervision.
I hope I don't sound like I am bashing the victim, but this is hard for me to understand. He cracked her skull with a hammer, she moved to another country, then allowed him back in her life and he beat her again which landed him in prison, yet she petitioned for his early release???
I agree. I've been in a very abusive situation, and I was off!! I was too scared to stay. But, who knows what deep psychological problems people have......😢
4:48 WHAT!?!?! He tried (and nearly succeeded) to murder this poor woman and was only sentenced to 1 year in prison?!?!?! How f*cked do you have to be to think that 1 year in prison is an acceptable punishment for a brutal attempted murder?!?!?
@@laurieb3703 - That was in Austria... Austria is not in the UK... But yes, parts of Europe are incredibly light on criminals at times and then they look down their noses as the barbaric American's that put people away for life
Her :"If anything ever happens to me, it will be Sweeney that has done it, and he will leave nothing of me behind..." Sweeney :"Get me out of Prison..." Her :"Yeah alright..."
Having grown up in an abusive household, I can understand why she helped him. The self-blame, the remorse they show, wanting to believe their words, not wanting others to see you as weak or blaming you. I can see now how crazy that sounds, but I say this as someone who has gotten out of the cycle. When you're in it, you can't see it for what it is.
whoever was responsible for the decision to have an 'amnesty' which allowed these monsters out over xmas should be sacked on the spot and at the very least face civil lawsuits, who in their right mind would let convicted domestic abusers out at the time when domestic abuse is most prevelant at that time of year it beggars belief thinking of the absolute incompetent fools in charge of such decisions
Our system of justice is fucked up. You're looking for a duck, you find a duck, you notice the webbed feet, the bill etc... it is a duck. But our justice system is like "you need to test for elephants first". 😂😂😂😂
17:08 I believe he sensed a vulnerability in Delia the moment he offered to buy her that drink. There was never a second in their relationship, she wasn’t being manipulated . I’m sure he would score high on the Hare psychopath check list (PCL). How much did he twist Melissa’s mind that she would petition for his release!? He is an extreme danger (especially to women) and always will be.
lol ive never cheated, raised my voice to, or even thought about laying a hand on a woman in violence, especially not one i loved..and yet im still unmarried at 40 and struggling with loneliness... yet this guy cracks his girlfriend's head open with a hammer and lives the high life off her money and she still loves him and goes to bat for him... like, seriously? this world is so backwards its absurd.
Hello, I know for sure I must have escaped murder at least 3 times. I've seen some strange alarming behaviors. I'm a female in my 40s and that's why I'm still single.
@@TheTrueCrimeChannel im not trying to victim-blame here, but, let's be real. She had plenty of chances to get restraining orders, had a huge network of family and friends that wanted to help her get away from this guy, had the financial means to leave, KNEW HE WAS DANGEROUS, and at the end of the day, she still chose to be with him. So in this particular case, I feel like a certain portion of the responsibility lies in her lap. Is this her fault? No. Did she enable the end result? I think it'd be unrealistic to say no.
@@AEOH3Xhe is a disgusting criminal monster no doubt , she is obviously a victim but something also in her head was definitely off. It's incomprehensible to me how she could stay with this man even if she had the opportunity to escape from him on several occasions. Unbelievable
Why does police always release him? I don't understand even if he show good behavior inside the prison, it wasn't enough proof to be a good person. Useless police
the police have nothing to do with this, it is not the job of the police to carry out trials and sentences, that is what the legislative system takes care of. The police arrest criminals and investigate cases and that's it. The police department doesn't carry out trials and doesn't decide the sentences, that is up to the judges and the laws system.
Great video.. glad I found your channel. May this dangerous individual rot in prison forever. Rest in peace to ALL of the victims and their loved ones.. ❤🙏✌️
My opinion is that if she (Melissa) "tolerated" this man's very violent behavior it is because she was perhaps addicted to drugs and that he was capable of supplying her. He was ugly, without charm, so, apart from drugs, how could she have wanted to be with this man? Especially since she was a foreigner, she could have returned to her country. I'm probably wrong, it's just that I don't understand why a woman who has some ability to interact socially, some talent, would agree to be in a relationship with such a man...?????
@@TheTrueCrimeChannel I wouldn't go so far as to say she knew she was going to die. But perhaps certain forms of addiction make these people more vulnerable and they minimize the dangers.
The lady who survived the horrendous didn't deserve it and I can see how she is still tormented by it but she is alive. The other dear souls didn't survive. She needs to be grateful for that and focus on rebuilding herself and know that you can't be with anyone just because you feel lonely. I feel she regrets that drink she accepted that day in the pub. Be careful who you invite into life let alone into your home.
Delia's little brother is my coworker here in texas he was a kid at tge time and remembers tge years spent around this man and remembers what happened to his sister he told me all about this! Cool to see it reach the television
R.I.P. She didn't have self-esteem and i believe he didn't find her when she was deported. She must've tell him where she was the same way she asked the cort to release him when he cracket her head with a hummer. 🤷🏼♂️ Also, he greatly assaulted 3 women and they let him out. WOW.
None can really understand the mental aspect of abuse like the one in this case, it takes 8 tries for a person to leave such relationships - and sadly some never get to leave.
I'm a Liverpudlian - what differentiates us from Scousers is that we are not born there. The word "Scouse" comes from the sailors who lived in LP who's wives made them a stew to take with them on boats (called Scouse Stew). So now you all know the reference.
There was a movie, I think it was with Burt Renolds as a Quarterback in prison. We'll, this guy looks like the guy who played the snitch for the Warden. It was the prison photo of Sweeny with a hat or cap on.
The state of judicial system in the 20th century was an absolute disgrace. It was as cancerous to society as some of these criminals were. The sheer in competence from both the court and police in cases like this beggars belief. RIP Melissa Halstead!
Wow! What a catch? Models can’t get enough of this amazing guy. So handsome and clean cut hard to find men. Models throwing them selves at him. Must be his character? Oh no he is a bad boy! Plus he has access to drugs. After all good guys are boring aren’t they? Well you reap what you sow

I realise looks aren't everything, and shouldn't be important, but what the heck initially attracted any of these women to that man? When I watch documentaries about Ted Bundy, the narrator referred to him as 'good looking'. 🙄🤔Um, nope.
I do not feel bad nor do i feel any sympathy or empathy towards Melissa. She told her sister that if anything happened to her, it would be John Sweeney. So she knew she could die as a result from this relationship, yet she stayed wth him. There is a thing in Spanish: " If you gravitate towards danger & trouble, even death itself is tasteful."
Yep, overtly aggressive men are masking their cowardly insecurities! To be a feeling man is seen as a weakness to themselves and unfortunately a lot of naive women fall for that ruse!
If a guy looking like that is lucky enough to live with a gorgeous woman like her on her dime he should have just treated her well and count himself blessed. Mellisa seemed like a very kind and generous woman.
These predators that live amongst us need to be locked up forever and never let out. This guy is just eerie. Especially, just staring at a tarantula for hours. How twisted was his mind? I don't ever want to find out! Great channel!
Death. Getting prison time is a joke for people who take innocent lives. I live in NY. I was in shawanagunk penitentiary with a guy named David. He was the son of Sam killer. He has a pretty good life. Has a wife now. Lives out his days as an old man. Prison is too good for murderers
How many times are serious criminals let out of jail, even when the victim was begging authorities to not release him, they did. Absolutely no accountability, none, and it happens all the time
This needs to stop ✋️, happends all the time an inmate gets released, & then they become a repeat offender, back in prison harming another innocent person.
@@TheTrueCrimeChannel not in my lifetime I don’t think. There has been a handful recently I’ve seen that do seem to of got a bit harsher sentances. So u never know
she wasn't that young when she dated him. That photo they use in this video of her is a bit misleading because in that picture she was very young and modeling. While she was dating him she was already 40 years old, she was no longer a "girl"
People need to respect themselves more. It is beyond my understanding how anyone, let alone a woman who in most cases much more weaker than a man, stay in a relationship where they get beaten, not once, not twice, not even three times, but multiple times. I'd rather become homeless than stay with a man who doesn't treat me respectfully
@TheTrueCrimeChannel you and only you alone let a person rule and control you! Why? Just to have somebody in your life? Bul...... peace and happiness does not come from someone else! It is in yourself! And your relationship with JESUS!
I do not understand. These criminals murder and attempt to murder, are arrested, and released. They then do the same things, are arrested again and released again. What is the purpose of such a justice system?
