Spoilers: Chengyin(the crown prince) and Gu Xiaowu are the same person. Early on, he introduced himself as Gu Xiaowu ( disguise ) and they fell in love. But for him to gain the throne as he is originally a Crown Prince, he had to kill Xi state’s people, which her grandfather ruled. This betrayal is too much for Her ( Xiao Feng) to handle so she decided to jump off a cliff that landed into the so call “ river of forgetfulness “ to erase their past memories. Chengyin followed her and fell into the river with her. Fast forward, she got her memory back due to events but Chengyin had not regained his. Which is why she states “ why can’t I hate the person I wish to hate?” She can’t truly hate Chengyin Bc he was once Gu Xiaowu that loved her dearly. At the end, Chengyin remembers that he IS the Gu Xiaowu that she had always mentioned to have loved. There’s no shorter version for me to explain

Kind of hard to forget that your lover slaughtered your grandfather, father, mother, and people. The Xi state was much more emotionally warm and caring. The empire was much more cold and calculating. Who wants to live in a cold and lonely empire when you could be in the warm and caring Xi state with family and friends?

@@dlee6997 It was to secure the throne. Killing her grandfather gave him status "points" and helped elevate him to crown prince and not just one of the princes. He had several brothers and a typical plot in period themes like this is how to secure the throne if you are one of the princes. There was a comment about a revenge due to a family member dying but I think later on it was discovered not to be true. I couldn't watch the whole thing through, I watched pieces. It was too hard to suspend belief in several spots for me. I was like really, nobody is that stupid in several places. When I watch clips on RU-vid I enjoy it but when I tried to watch the full episodes I was like who wrote this?

@@AlexS-il7zm when I looked at the full episodes my take on the prince is a little different. He was compassionate at the beginning defending his brother who was eventually murdered. He didn't know anything about the massacre of his mother's side of the family. He was pulled into the revenge plan by the general and his cousin. Post memory loss everyone around stayed silent. He fell in love with her again and thought he was protecting her from the evildoers in the Eastern Palace. So his frustration and anger were based on being thinking he was doing what going to protect her and sneaking moments of affection to hint at his true feelings for her and not understanding why he was hated. He didn't understand because he didn't remember but everyone else did. I agree with the plots I wonder how true it is to the actual book?
