Umpire call is so inconsistent, no matter what level. Table tennis action is so fast and need to introduce slow motion replay as a lot of other sports such as tennis. That's probably why TT is still not a major global sport. If replay is standard as part of tournament, all players have to STICK to the rules so the game will be fair. Many top players actually have faulty serves.
TT will never become a major sport. It has nothing to do with the serves. It has more to do with cultural standards. Table tennis became an Olympic sport mostly due to ping pong diplomacy. It's a niche sport like fencing.State funded and pretty impossible to commercialize. Tennis reached the pinnacle of its popularity with the rivalry of McEnroe vs Borg.McEnroe was a serve and volley player.Wimbledon was always far more prestigious and popular than Rolland Garros despite much less long rallies played.
That is the difference between umpires at official events and social media commentators, most of which seems to be at least 99th level experts in everything :)
